Description:
Jalebi is a type of dessert / sweet, which can be traced back to ancient Persia, and today, is popular in North India, South India, Middle East, Nepal and Pakistan.

Jalebi is essentially a deep fried dough, soaked in a sugar syrup. Jalebi is often shaped into various pretzel-like shapes, figure-of-8 shapes, or in circular shapes. It can be thin or thick, and may be served hot or cold.

The dough for Jalebi is made with water, sugar, oil, baking powder, semolina / plain white flour / maida refined wheat flour, yeast and plain yoghurt. The dough is then deep fried in oil / clarified butter (Ghee).

The sugar syrup used to soak the Jalebi is made with sugar, water, powdered cardamom, lemon juice and rose water. To give Jalebi its distinct orange colour, edible orange food colouring is added. Some hawkers also include saffron to enhance the taste.

Jalebi is often eaten plain, although it can also be served with cinnamon sugar, chocolate syrup or ice cream. However, Jalebi on its own is already relatively sweet.

I personally prefer Jalebi to be thick, well soaked in syrup and hot.

These are the top 3 stalls which I feel serve the best Jalebi in Singapore.
