Opening its doors in July 2018, The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs is the latest concept by Chef Benny Se Teo, of E18hteen Chefs fame. With The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs, Chef has created a halal steakhouse, offering affordably priced European plates and good quality steaks, all in a comfortable, family-friendly setting.

Ambience at The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs is modern casual. The warmly lit place is spacious and open, with modern wooden furniture and comfortable booths spread around. Angled such that it offers some privacy, yet still allows for people watching, the furnishings are decently comfortable. An open drinks bar makes the place more approachable, but the highlight of the decor is the feature wall, adorned with a poster detailing the various cuts of meat. Interestingly, there's clever use of psychology here; they play upbeat, fast dance music when the place is crowded, and switch to slow, calm jazz when the place isn't crowded.

Service at The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs is friendly, and aspires to typical restaurant standards. Staff accord personalised attention to each table, and display good product knowledge on the menu when questioned. Orders are quickly fulfilled, and I note they clear up quickly when diners leave, preparing and resetting the clean tables. Found staff to be fairly engaging. I like that they check for feedback on your meal, and the manner in requesting for positive comments on social media is elegant and tasteful; "Do leave your comments so that staff can be encouraged". Note there is usually a queue during peak periods, it can take up to 30 minutes to get a seat.

Food at The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs is American style grills. As a halal steakhouse, they specialise in various premium cuts of beef, but they also offer other meats, including lamb, poultry, fish, and seafood. Good quality European style dining here, with fresh, premium ingredients. Generally, I find dishes to be consistently well-executed and tasty, even on repeat visits. They even offer home made gelato and sorbet ice cream. Portions are medium to large for individuals, though I note most diners order to share. Prices are affordable, just below mid-range, budget about SGD $25 per person for a meal here.

A fairly decent Latte (SGD $4.80) here, with average strength to its body, and a lovely aroma of roasted coffee beans. Slightly medium thin in texture, but straightforward and decent.

The Fried Calamari With Sour Plum Mayo (SGD $9) is decent enough. A light, crisp, crumb batter, envelops the bouncy squid rings, which have a delectable bite to texture, with a delicate sweet savoury flavour. The sour plum mayonnaise on the side is interesting, lending a fruity sour refreshing creamy note. The batter tends to go soft quickly though. Worth ordering!

The French Fries With Truffle Oil (SGD $10) are a popular side dish here. Piping hot and moist, with a good potato flavour, the fries are drizzled with a little olive oil, lending an earthy fragrance. Not too overwhelming, which is nice. Shavings of parmesan cheese complete this.

Served with every order of steak, the Hot Bun & Butter (SGD $Complimentary) helps fill you up. The texture of the bun is soft, with a light bready sweet flavour. Won't miss much even if you choose not to eat it.

The Meat And Mash Lamb (SGD $18) is a light meal, and can even be an appetizer. A single, individual portion of Lamb Skewer, with tender, juicy chunks of soy marinated lamb, is served over a bowl of creamy smooth, thick and rich home made Mashed Potatoes, laced with a little truffle oil. Interesting experience to cut the lamb off the skewer, for it to fall into the soft bed of mashed potatoes below. Lovely flavours of meaty savoury salty sweet starchy earthy. Nice, but not filling.

The Beef Australian Torello Rose Veal, 140 Days Grain-Fed, 250g (SGD $20) is excellent. I got this done to medium rare, and it was beautifully executed. The 250g young beef veal is tender and juicy in texture, with a bold savoury meaty flavour, and hints of light grainy salty flavour. Served with a fresh, crunchy salad of vegetal bitter arugula / wild rocket leaves, and a choice of dipping sauce; mushroom, black pepper, or garlic. Loved every bite of this large cut. Highly recommended!
Update: Less than 1 month in, due to sourcing issues, they've changed the veal supplier, and the price is now SGD $23.

The Beef Uruguayan Ribeye Steak, Black Angus, 300g (SGD $26.50) is very good, with bold meaty savoury salty flavour, and a hint of smoky aroma. Nicely seared to medium rare, the 300g black angus beef ribeye steak has a meaty juicy chew, and is satisfiying with its medium large portion. Served with a fresh, crunchy salad of vegetal bitter arugula / wild rocket leaves, and a choice of dipping sauce; mushroom, black pepper, or garlic. Good!

The Deep-Fried French GG Poulet (SGD $22) is a filling meal. Served with a large bowl of House Salad, a generous mix of spinach, curly endive / frisée, pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and lettuce, dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette paste. Nice crunchy firm juicy textures, with vegetal fruity sweet sour bitter flavours, very refreshing. The star is the Roast Spring Chicken served with sea salt, the spring chicken has tender meat which comes easily off the bone, but alternates moist and dry in parts. The chicken meat has a delicate sweet savoury flavour, but the best part is the crispy chicken skin, with its bold salty savoury flavour. Good!

They actually ask how you like the doneness of the Pan-Grilled Salmon (SGD $21), something I usually experience in high-end restaurants. I chose either medium or medium-well; the result is the 200g salmon fish fillet is nicely tender, juicy, and flaky in texture, with a delicate sweet savoury oceany flavour. Served with crunchy vegetal bitter arugula / wild rocket leaves coated in balsamic vinaigrette paste, a medley of tender smoky earthy vegetal sweet roasted vegetables (including carrots, shiitake mushrooms, baby potatoes) coated in black pepper, and a robust lobster bisque as a dipping sauce. Satisfiying and healthy meal. Good!

The Baby Rack Of Lamb (SGD $32) features beautifully seared lamb rack, served with grainy raisin couscous, which has a fruity sweet earthy flavour, and crunchy vegetal bitter arugula / wild rocket leaves coated in balsamic vinaigrette paste. The lamb rack is done to a perfect medium, served coated with herb butter, and has a tender, moist texture to the meat. Each bite is a bold savoury salty meaty burst of flavour, I like that it lacks the gamey taste of lower quality versions. The mint jelly tastes artificial, but the spicy black pepper gravy is delicious. Worth ordering!

Loved the American style Beef Burger Double (SGD $18). The sesame seed burger buns are softly crisp and buttered, the crunchy vegetal bitter arugula / wild rocket leaves and sunny side up egg acting as perfect partners to the duo of thick, tightly packed, tender, juicy, meaty minced beef patties. Coated in gooey cheddar cheese, each bite is satisfiying with savoury salty flavour. The crisp outside fluffy inside medium-cut fries / chips have good potato flavour, and the sprinkling of black pepper and truffle oil make this so fragrant. I enjoyed this greatly. Highly recommended!

The Rainbow Cheesecake (SGD $7) is vibrant and colourful, with a beautiful curved swirl to the colours. But what makes this different from other versions, beyond the rich, creamy smooth texture, is the layered flavours. It starts out more citrusy sweet sour, then gradually transitions into more earthy floral sweet in flavour. Completed with a graham biscuit crumble base and a milk chocolate piece. Good!

Fairly decent, straightforward Affogato (SGD $6.50) here. A shot of espresso, which you pour over a scoop of rich vanilla ice cream. The coffee lends a smoky roasted aroma, and earthy bitter notes, complementing the creamy smooth texture and floral sweet flavour of the ice cream. More dessert than beverage though, as the rather hardy ice cream takes awhile to melt despite the heat of the coffee. Worth ordering!

Update Jun-2019: Returned to The MeatHouse By E18hteen Chefs during the Hari Raya Puasa period, to find they have a special menu to celebrate the season. The dishes look creative!

The Iced Bandung (SGD $Complimentary) is served with every order from the seasonal Hari Raya Puasa special menu. Has a rich milky sweet flavour and a thin chilled texture. Decent enough, and well balanced in taste.

The Rojak Chicken (SGD $25) is delicious, exactly what we expected it to be. A whole roasted spring chicken, with crisp salty savoury skin and tender moist sweet savoury chicken meat, is served alongside crisp juicy strips of cucumber and turnip, in a rich, thick rojak gravy. Garnished with crushed peanuts, this has a piquant sour sweet savoury shrimpy flavour. Good!
