The COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of circuit breaker measures in Singapore hit the food & beverage industry really hard. That's why I was surprised to hear that Kiyoshi opened its doors on 13th April 2020, right after all restaurants were forced to prohibit dine-in. With a name that means 'pure' or 'clean', Kiyoshi is a casual family-friendly restaurant focused on speciality Inaniwa udon noodles, with bento set meals for takeaway and delivery. I subsequently returned when dine-in was available.

Delivery Packaging

Kiyoshi doesn't directly deliver themselves, instead, they contract 3rd party delivery companies such as Lalamove and Grab. However, takeaway self-pickup is the better option here. I like that the majority of the bentos are thoughtfully designed to feature ingredients that hold up well some time later, and remain well presented and visually pleasing. Their quality and taste is a notch above the average, with dishes being tasty and satisfying. Portions are large and filling for individuals, and prices are reasonable, budget about SGD $22++ per person.

The Tamagoyaki (SGD $4.80) here is unique, because the wobbly tamagoyaki / rolled egg omelette is infused with dashi and light soy sauce, resulting in a deep eggy salty savoury sweet flavour. A dollop of fresh grated daikon radish helps offset the lingering notes on the palate, cleansing with its bright vegetal sweet flavour that is so refreshing.

The story behind this Miru Kurepu Keki Matcha Azuki (SGD $Complimentary) is an excellent service recovery process. I'd ordered delivery on an occasion, but 90 minutes after the contracted deliver rider failed to show up (looking at you, Lalamove, and your disappointing service), I decided to drop by the restaurant to self-collect my order. The Kiyoshi staff had kept my food warm, and though it wasn't their fault, apologised profusely. They couldn't refund my delivery fees, but made up by giving me this dessert cake instead. The miru kurepu keki matcha azuki / mille-crepe cake with green tea and adzuki red beans has a soft, creamy smooth texture, with delicate earthy floral sweet flavour. I like that the matcha / green tea isn't overpowering. Pleasant and delicious. Highly recommended!
