1. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

In a city considered the cultural capital of Maharashtra, West India, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum stands out in Pune for being among the finest. Curated by the late Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar, the museum houses over 20,000 artifacts, of which about 2,500 are on display. These consist mainly of pan Indian objects from the 18th and 19th century, including paintings, textiles, handicrafts, musical instruments, toys, kitchen utensils, weapons, and more. The highlight here is the Mastnai Mahal, a recreation of a luxurious 18th century palace.



2. Shaniwar Wada

The Shaniwar Wada is an 18th century fortress in Maharashtra, West India, built by the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire in Pune. The still standing fortification walls, bastions, and gates are an imposing sight, and within stands an intricate lotus shaped fountain and garden complex. Every evening, there is a spectacular light and sound show here, tracing its history against the backdrop of the fortress walls.

The best example would be Parvati Hill, rising 640 metres above sea level, offering beautiful panoramic views of the city below. Located here are 5 heritage temples, including the oldest heritage structure, the Parvati Temple, where visitors have to climb 103 black quarry stone steps to reach the top. The Peshwa Museum is also located here, housing rare artifacts from the ancient Maratha empire in India.



4. Pimpri Chinchwad Science Centre

Located on the outskirts of Pune city in Maharashtra is the Pimpri Chinchwad Science Centre. The 28th Science Centre built in India, the sprawling grounds feature 4 permanent galleries (Automobile, Fun Science, Energy, Ecological Park), 2 temporary exhibition halls (Dino Park, Climate Change), an inflatable dome planetarium, a science demonstration area, and even a 3D science show facility. With over 250 exhibits on display, both children and adults will find it an eye-opening experience.



5. Aga Khan Palace

Considered among the greatest marvels in India, and a major landmark of Maharashtra, the Aga Khan Palace was was built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892 in Pune. Closely linked to the freedom movement in India, it houses memorials to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, as well as other significant Indian freedom fighters. The magnificent Italian style architecture of the building with its 5 halls and manicured lawns are very picturesque.

A popular galbi franchise founded in 1981 in the city of Busan, in Yeongnam region, South Korea, Yoogane has since gone international, opening its doors in Singapore in May 2014. Yoogane specialises in chicken galbi, which refers to marinated chicken meat that is grilled on a hot pan. The meat itself is marinated in ganjang sauce, a type of soy sauce made from fermented soy beans, giving it a savoury, sweet, and spicy taste.

Ambience at Yoogane resembles a typical Korean barbecue, with large tables sectioned off with low partitions, bright flourescent lighting and a high ceiling. The open space allows for air circulation, always important in a Korean barbecue, and although the smell of grilled meats does still cling to you, it's not too strong. The tables themselves are sparse but functional, spacious enough to accomodate the large grilling pan, as well as several side dishes. I did find the low hanging cabinets under the table irritating though, as my legs kept banging against it.

Service at Yoogane is very good... when it's not crowded. Staff greet you, give you attention, and are knowledgable enough to advise on the menu. They're also trained by chefs from the Korea outlets to assist customers to cook / prepare the food at the table, though they're only able to do this when it's not crowded. Or, you can choose to cook the food yourself, but do heed their advice on preparation. Due to the grill-at-table nature of galbi, there is quite a bit of work in setting up, and tearing down, during your meal, so staff are almost always circling around to assist. Thumbs up for that!

Food at Yoogane is focused on their speciality of chicken galbi. This is typically paired with other ingredients like seafood and vegetables, all cooked together on the hot grilling pan. Communal dining is a must here, as orders are for a minimum of 2 diners, although I find portions to be slightly small. However, taste is very good, their ganjang sauce pairs well with meat, vegetables, and starch! Yoogane also offers a free-flow salad bar, although variety is limited. I personally find prices slightly high due to the small portion sizes, budget about SGD $32 or more per person for a meal here.

The clean but unattractive interior can get rather noisy during peak periods, when the sound of chatter and grilling fills the air. They offer complementary foldable paper mascots if there is a queue.

Items from the free-flow salad bar are complimentary with each meal. The Kkakdugi / Cubed Pickled Daikon Radish here comes in an uncommon bright yellow, but works great as a refreshing palate cleanser as galbi can be quite heavy. The unique Coleslaw With Strawberry Sauce also stood out for me, the crunch of the cabbage with the sweetness of the strawberry sauce is unusual, but pleasant.

Kkakdugi / Cubed Pickled Daikon Radish

I sampled the Chicken Galbi With Chukkumi Octopus (SGD $43.80 for Minimum 2 diners), and the Combination Dokboki / Ddukbokki / Tteokbokki (SGD $6.90), which comes with a trio of rice cakes, including traditional / original, sweet potato, and cheese rice cakes. Each order of galbi is served with a medley of fresh vegetables (spring onions, leeks, daikon radish, cabbage). All the ingredients are cooked together until the ganjang sauce coats everything.

I find the combination of savoury, sweet, spicy taste to be very appealing, and the spice level is low enough that it doesn't distract from the other flavours. The vegetables lend a nice contrast of crunchy texture, complementing the soft, tender chicken meat, and the fresh, chewy octopus. The traditional / original rice cake is decent, but the flavour I like best is the sweet potato rice cake, with a sweet, gooey interior. The cheese rice cake was not that great, as the small amount of cheese within didn't do much to enhance the flavour. Overall, a very good dish, although it's slightly oily, and the flavour can be rather one-note after awhile... and once you order it once, everything else tastes almost similar.

Paul Boulangerie Patisserie, more commonly known as PAUL, is a French franchise bakery cafe. Established in 1889 in Croix, within the Nord-Pas-De-Calais region, France, Paul Boulangerie Patisserie specialises in homemade baked goods and confectioneries, including breads, crepes, sandwiches, pastries, cakes, macarons, and more. Paul Boulangerie Patisserie opened its doors in Singapore in March 2012, staying close to the original French / France recipes for their menu.

Ambience at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie is consistent worldwide, a simple, non-descript, black against white visual aesthetic. Furniture resembles those found in typical Paris / Parisian street cafes, featuring small round wooden tables, and either hard wooden chairs or soft comfy sofas. Lighting is typically dim, although Paul Boulangerie Patisserie does get quite a bit of natural light. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Service at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie is efficient and proactive. Staff take notice of diners, checking if you're ready to order, and are able to carry a conversation. Most are also knowledgable on the various items in their extensive menu, able to advise accordingly if questioned. Very good service, but not truly outstanding yet.

Food at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie revolves around traditional French favourites. They have an extensive list of baked goods, breads, pastries, and dessert confectioneries, most of which I find to be very good! They've also got a small selection of main courses, salads, and sandwiches. Ingredients used in dishes are very fresh, bursting with flavour. Portion sizes are decent for one, although prices are slightly high as befits their premium status. Budget about SGD $50 per person for a full meal, or about SGD $15 per person for pastries and desserts.

The Grand Café Crème (SGD $5.40) is a classic French coffee, sold in nearly all Paris / Parisian cafes. It consists of regular coffee that is typically pulled longer than an espresso, made from coarse ground coffee beans. Despite its name, it actually doesn't contain cream, rather, a small amount of milk and foam are added.

The Hot Chocolate (SGD $6.90) here is among the best I've tasted, rich, thick, and deep with chocolate flavour, but not overly sweet. Hot and satisfiying!

The Café Miel (SGD $7.50) is coffee with a thin layer of milk froth, sprinkled with cinnamon. A side of honey is provided for mixing. This is undoubtedly a sweet drink, and I find that you don't need to add honey, as each mouthful has a hint of sweetness from the cinnamon.

They do pretty good bread here, made according to traditional French recipes. The Croissant (SGD $2.80) is fluffy and bread-like in texture, but I miss the flaky, crisp outer crust that other places have. The Baguette (SGD $2.80) had a crisp exterior, but was soft and spongy within, tearing apart easily, and not tough to eat. Great!

The Benoîton 2 Olives (SGD $2.50) has a nice, soft, chewy texture to the bread, and is studded through with savoury black olives and green olives. Taste is savoury, with a hint of salty, but it's still pleasant. Good!

The Tarte Sucre (SGD $3.80) is a round bun, made of brioche bread, which has a soft, chewy texture. It's sprinkled with sugar, and the bottom has pockets of cheese, giving it a balanced sweet, savoury taste. I quite like it!

The Éclair Paris Brest (SGD $7.50) marries 2 classic French pastries, the Éclair, and the Paris-Brest. A soft, oblong choux pastry, filled with smooth, sweet hazelnut cream and candied hazelnuts, this excellent albeit decadent dessert isn't too sweet or heavy. Highly recommended!

The Éclair Chocolat (SGD $7.50) has a soft, oblong choux pastry, filled with smooth, creamy milk chocolate. Not too sweet, not too cloying, it's light enough that you don't feel it weigh you down. Pretty good!

The Crêpe Chocolat Et Chantilly (SGD $8.50) features lovely, thin French style pancakes, soft and tearable, topped with a rich chocolate sauce and fluffy whipped cream. Pretty good as a dessert, though unassuming in presentation.

The Café Surprise Set (SGD $12.90) is like a sampler platter of desserts. Choose from any coffee, and it's served with several mini portions of confectioneries. The Crème Brûlée Mini has a smooth, eggy, almost creamy like texture to the soft custard, and the caramelised sugar on top is thick enough that you'll need to strike it to shatter. The Moelleux Chocolat Mini has a dense, rich flavour of chocolate, but was let down by the somewhat dry texture of the cake. The Macarons Mini Vanille & Chocolat, while somewhat plain in looks, are actually pretty good, with a chewy texture, a distinct separation between the crust and the filling, and isn't too sweet.

The Anglaise Pomme (SGD $4.10) is a classic French style apple tart on a crisp puff pastry base. The version here has slightly burnt edges, but the puff pastry is properly crisp, without being too thin, and still able to hold the weight of the apple slices. The apples are fresh, nicely sweet with a caramelised taste, and very fresh and juicy. Very good!

The pretty Millefeuille Fraise (SGD $7.80), or Strawberry Millefeuille / Strawberry Napoleon Cake, features crisp layers of puff pastry encasing fluffy, decadent custard, and fresh, tart strawberries. Each mouthful is creamy, smooth, and sweet... So good!

The Tartelette Citron (SGD $6.80), or lemon curd tart / lemon tart, is a decent sized French dessert pastry that is very good. The lemon curd is properly thick, almost creamy with a texture similar to pudding, and the taste of sweet, tangy / zesty, and sour is nicely balanced. The crust, while thick, crumbles easily, and has a buttery biscuit flavour. Pleasant to eat!

The Longe De Thon (SGD $29.90), or Seasoned Tuna Loin, features a thick, fresh, fillet of tuna fish loin, quickly seared under high heat such that the outside is cooked, but the inside remains pink. An acquired taste, I loved the crunch of the sesame seeds and the flavour of the cooked meat, but the thick cut meant that the raw tuna was chunky, which I didn't quite like. Served with a delightful medley of roasted vegetables / ratatouille including carrots, zucchini, and summer squash, with grilled asparagus, and a seasonal sweet cranberry sauce on the side.

The Confit De Canard (SGD $28.90) is a signature dish from the Périgord region of France. The version here features a slow roasted, herb marinated duck leg, served on soft root vegetables (carrots, zucchini, summer squash), and a seasonal cranberry sauce. While I loved the savoury, salty flavour of the duck skin and meat, and I liked how easy the duck fat was to remove, the dish was let down by the dry texture of the duck meat. Overall, an average dish, there are much better versions elsewhere.

Update Oct-2015: The Sésame Canard Fumé (SGD $19.90) features savoury smoked duck breast, juicy sliced tomatoes and romaine lettuce, orange mayonnaise spread, sandwiched between a sesame dusted bread flute. The smokiness of the tender duck slices pairs well with the freshness of the vegetables, and the tangy, citrus zest of the spread. Excellent!

Update Oct-2015: The Paillasson Champignons (SGD $19.90) is an earthy dish of sauteed wild button mushrooms, shallots, and parsley, on a pomme paillasson / potato pancake, which is soft and fluffy, with good potato flavour. Decent enough as a dish, though the earthy flavour becomes rather one-note the more you eat. The name of this dish actually means 'doormat' in French, so named because of its resemblance to a traditional France style woven straw doormat!

An upmarket grocery store and cafe, Dean & DeLuca was founded in New York City, United States Of America, by Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca in 1977. As an emporium retailing gourmet food and houseware, Dean & DeLuca was among the first of its kind, and quickly gained fame. Dean & DeLuca opened its doors in Singapore in June 2012, with a focus on retailing their famous house brand of items.

As a grocery store, Dean & DeLuca is laid out in a neat, linear pattern, with rows of shelves displaying their wares. The most eye catching displays are their bakery and confectionery counter with various pastries and freshly baked bread that smell amazing. Their salad and desserts refrigerated display is colourful and eye-catching as well. Dean & DeLuca also has a good number of seats for their cafe, featuring modern, comfortable furniture in hues of wood and teak, with a solid feel.

Most interaction with Dean & DeLuca staff are limited to over the counter transactions, and the cafe itself is largely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection done at the cashier. However, I do find staff helpful, able to advice on items in stock, or provide general information on food preparation. Thumbs up as well for efficiency in fulfilling orders, you'll generally wait less than 10 minutes for your food. However, dirty / empty tables aren't cleared quickly, typically taking up to 15 minutes or more.

Cuisine at Dean & DeLuca is largely Italian American inspired, with a small selection of main courses, and all-day breakfast / brunch items, as well as salads. Taste of most of their main courses borders on average though, nothing very spectacular. Their specialities are their desserts and baked goods, be it bread, pastries, or other confectioneries. Portions are suitably large American size helpings, and prices are reasonable for the use of fresh, premium produce, budget around SGD $28 or more person for a meal here.

The sights, sounds, and smell of the store is both exciting and intoxicating. I find a simple pleasure in being able to pick out what you want from the fresh displays.

The Latte (SGD $5.50) is decent, strong and full bodied. Not the best I've had, but a good choice if you visit. The Mocha (SGD $6.50) fared slightly better, as the addition of chocolate enhanced the flavour of the coffee.

The fruity, zesty, tangy taste of the African Solstice Tea (SGD $6), with notes of sweet and sharp, is made from a blend of rooibos, wild berries, and rose petals. Good!

The White Ginger Pear Tea (SGD 6) is a sweet, calming, and refreshing blend of white tea, pear, and ginger.

The festive Christmas Red Velvet Cheese Log Cake (SGD $9) was pretty good, I loved the taste of the cream cheese frosting, and the log cake itself was light and still slightly moist. The colour was attractive too, deep and rich hue of red. Worth a try!

The festive Christmas Rainbow Log Cake (SGD $7.50) looked very pretty and colourful, but the taste was rather disappointing. Flat and one-note, plus I felt there was too much cream. Even I scrapping off the majority of the cream, it was still rather heavy on the palate.

I loved the Farmhouse Carrot Cake (SGD $8), with its thick, dense, yet still moist texture and flavourful taste of carrots and honey. The icing sugar and cream cheese frosting on top is sweet without being heavy, and the addition of a slice of dried apricot lent a fruity flavour. Very good!

The festive Christmas Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Pie With Ice Cream (SGD $8) sounds like a great idea on paper, but the actual execution was somewhat average. Taste is decent, with the prominent sweetness of the sweet potato, overpowering the more delicate sweetness of pumpkin. The pie slice is extremly thick, and while I loved the vanilla ice cream, the pie crust was thick, doughy, and not that great.

What makes the Bread & Butter Pudding (SGD $6.50) here different from others is the sweet, tart stripe of raspberry jam in the middle, lending a fruity flavour. The bread is properly soft, and I love that it's studded with raisins. The portion size is so thick and huge, you're better off sharing it! My only complaint is that the milk provided to pour over the pudding wasn't enough!

The Sticky Cinnamon Roll (SGD $3.50) looks better than it tastes. The large, thick roll is doughy, and although the cinnamon sugar is evenly spread inside, the roll is dry. Sweet, but not overly so, I would have preferred it to be either more crisp, or more fluffy. Below average.

The Bombolini Raspberry (SGD $3.50) is an Italian style donut that is filled with a sweet fruit jam, in this case, raspberry. The dough is fluffly and soft, sweet with the dusting of powdered sugar, but the raspberry filling is a little thin. Still quite good though.

The Coffee Cream Eclair (SGD $3.50) is very good. A nice chewy choux puff pastry, stuffed full with rich, smooth, coffee cream, which has a nice flavour without being overly sweet. Decorated with almonds and roasted coffee beans, this dessert is heavy on taste, has the correct texture, and is very satisfiying!

Now the Wagyu Beef Lasagna (SGD $15) was decent. Taste was good, solid with the flavour of beef, cheese and tomato, and the portion was extremely huge! My only quibble is the use of wagyu, because taking this premium cut, making it into mince meat, then covering it with other strongly flavoured ingredients defeats the point of using wagyu.

I loved the Honey Glazed Gammon Ham (SGD $23), which had 2 thick slabs of savoury smoked gammon ham, covered in a thin cranberry sauce. The grilled vine-ripened tomato was juicy and very tasty, with an intense tomato flavour. Also like the sauteed button mushrooms, with a nice, earthy taste. The weakest item here was the garden salad, while fresh, lacked dressing and was dry. Overall though, this was the best main course I had here.

What I loved best about the Lamb Shepherd's Pie (SGD $12) is the stringy, savoury cheese crust on top, just melted enough to be gooey. This covers a thick layer of smooth mashed potato, and within, a decent helping of minced lamb and carrot filling. The taste is decent, the lamb filling and meat sauce isn't too salty or savoury, but the taste could have been improved with the use of herbs or spices. Average at best.

The portion size of the Pan-Seared Salmon (SGD $15) is large, but because they use frozen salmon here, the taste is somewhat muted. Also, they overcooked this during my visit, because I ended up with a chewy texture to the fish, and a slightly rubbery texture to the skin. Below average.

The best thing about the Slow-Cooked Beef Striploin (SGD $18) was the herb roasted potatoes, fragrant and savoury, with a touch of sweetness from a dusting of cinnamon. Otherwise, this dish was the absolute worst dish I've had here, the beef is dry, tough, and overly salty. The high price for such a small portion of meat makes this poor value for money, avoid ordering this at all costs!

I find the Grilled Ancho Chicken (SGD $12) to be decent. On one hand, the dish has a thick slice of tender chicken breast, doused in a savoury, tasty brown gravy. On the other hand, the dish is rather light, and the chicken meat borders on dry. Points for taste, but not for texture! Still makes for a pretty decent dish worth ordering though.

Among the standout brunch items on the menu for me is the aptly named The New Yorker (SGD $17). This classic American New York breakfast dish features a mound of softly scrambled eggs, onions, and capers, topped with a thick layer of savoury smoked salmon, all sandwiched within a giant sesame seed bagel spread with butter and cream cheese. Decadent, filling, savoury, salty, sweet, tangy, all at once. At such a low price, this humongous breakfast is extremely value for money, very tasty and delicious, and can even be shared! Highly recommended!

The New Yorker

A perennial American-Italian-Jewish favourite commonly found on the menu of New York delis / delicatessens, the Beef Pastrami Sandwich (SGD $19) features thinly sliced, savoury, moist marinated beef pastrami, sandwiched between warm, soft ciabatta bread along with gooey swiss cheese and pickled horseradish gherkins. A hearty, satisfiying sandwich, it warms the belly, and is an excellent choice of comfort food. Highly recommended!

The Chicken Burrito (SGD $13) is a generous portion of a tightly stuffed burrito, with a skin that is crisp outside and soft inside. Packed with tender chicken meat, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and onions, love how the ingredients work together to provide moisture and flavour. Taste is good, and the dish is very filling! Served with a side of garden salad and truffle fries, the huge portion alone makes this dish value for money.
