Although they've been around since 2009, Joe & Dough has only recently started expanding, becoming more prominent. Offering artisinal coffee in a casual, comfortable setting, and freshly baked bread that is handmade daily, Joe & Dough husband-and-wife founders Damien Koh and Dawn Wee even contribute to charity by donating any unsold food to Food From The Heart.

Ambience at Joe & Dough is laid-back and rustic, with warm lighting against wood and earthy colour tones. Most of their outlets feature open spaces, great for people watching, and comfortable furniture for relaxing. And while their menu boards don't have pictures, you can always look at the clear display counter where all their appetizing sandwiches and pastries are on display.

Service at Joe & Dough stands above your average coffee franchise. For starters, staff are friendly and welcoming, not mechanical, and quick to fulfill orders. Secondly, they also serve your food tableside, while other coffee joints typically require you to self-service. Pretty good!

Food at Joe & Dough comprises mostly of drinks, sandwiches, and dessert pastries. All breads and pastries are freshly baked daily, and Joe & Dough even supply to other popular cafes! However, their menu variety is rather small. Portions are decently sized for 1 person, and prices are relatively affordable as compared to elsewhere, budget about SGD $14 or so per person for a sandwich and a drink.

They promise hearty, yet simple and uncomplicated food, that carries good flavour. This is evident, as most of their sandwiches taste very good, although their pastries can sometimes be hit or miss.

Their dedication to serving good coffee shows in the Cafe Latte (SGD $4.90). Arabica coffee beans are house roasted in small batches, and only ground upon order, ensuring a strong, full-bodied, solid taste, and a fragrant aroma.

The Counting Sheep Tea (SGD $4) is a straightforward camomile tea, simple, uncomplicated. Thumbs up for the creative naming though!

The Monbana Hot Chocolate (SGD $5) is pretty good, with a rich, semi deep chocolate flavour. But the texture is a little too thin for my liking. Still rather decent, worth trying.

I like that the White Chocolate Mocha (SGD $4.90) here isn't as sweet as elsewhere, but still had solid layers of taste, you get the rich creamy taste of the white chocolate, and the robust flavour of the coffee. Good!

The Zesty Orange Tea Cake (SGD $4.20) lives up to the promise of taste with the zesty zing of mandarin orange, layered with a subtle buttery vanilla flavour. However, I was rather disappointed with the texture of the cake, it held an unusual firmness, requiring some effort to cut through with a fork.

The Coconut Tart (SGD $3.80) was a delight, although it looks unassuming. But bite into it and you're rewarded with the crunchy strands of dessicated coconut, folded into a sweet and crumbly tart crust. Unusual, but good!

The Cinnamon Melt (SGD $2.80) pastry isn't too sweet, and has a good spread of cinnamon sugar coating the fluffy interior. Tasty! Unfortunately, it's let down by the overall dry texture, and somewhat crisp outer layer.

The Ham & Cheese Croissant (SGD $4) is straightforward, featuring savoury honey baked ham and gooey Swiss emmental cheese, stuffed with a flaky, buttery croissant. The croissant bread is fluffy and soft, tearing apart easily, and the flaky outer layer shatters when cut / bit. Very good, though I wish for more slices of honey baked ham within!

The Bacon Mushroom Melt Zopf (SGD $8.20) combines lean, savoury back bacon, crunchy sauteed onions, gooey Swiss emmental cheese, and juicy, earthy roasted mushrooms within a soft, buttery zopf. I loved the contrasting savoury, earthy, and sweet tastes within, and the zopf bread is so soft and chewy!

Biting into the extremely filling Salt Beef & Caramelised Onion Jam Rye (SGD $9.50) is a delight. The crisp outer crust of the fragrant rye bread shatters softly, then your teeth sinks into the chewy dough. You'll taste the moist, savoury strips of salt beef first, followed by a hint of sweetness from the caramelised onions, soft with an almost jam spread texture. However, the Swiss emmental cheese gets lost in the much stronger taste of the other ingredients.

Update Aug-2015: The Rose Earl Grey Tea (SGD $4.20) has a sweet floral scent, and is calming on the palate, with the elegant notes of earl grey. Pretty good! I notice however, that prices have risen since my last visit 8 months ago.

Update Aug-2015: The Pomegranate Oolong Tea (SGD $4.20) has a fruity, balanced taste of sweet and bitter, very subtle. I actually loved this, and went back for a 2nd round!

Update Sep-2015: The Truffled Egg Mayo With Lumpfish Roe On Multigrain Toast (SGD $8.50) has a nice mound of soft, scrambled eggs, flavoured with earthy truffle oil, on fluffy multigrain toast bread. Topped with a slightly salty, briny lumpfish roe, this makes for a decent breakfast dish.

Update May-2016: The first time I've ever seen a Raspberry Latte (SGD $5.50), and having tasted it, I guess I know why it's uncommon. The flavour of raspberry is overwhelmingly intense, the sourness clashing with the bitterness of the coffee. Unpleasant drink.

Update May-2016: They now offer more desserts, such as this Espresso Cheesecake (SGD $6.80). I find this to be very good, a creamy, rich, decadent mix of classic New York Cheesecake, and Chocolate Cheesecake, infused with espresso. The base is an Oreo cookie crumble, and lends a nice deep chocolate cookie flavour. Yummy!

Update Sep-2020: More than 5 years since I first visited Joe & Dough, they've since expanded across the island, closing some outlets but opening even more. As a serious coffee and baked goods cafe contender in the market, they've also changed their concept slightly - they no longer offer artisanal baked breads in unique European styles. Instead, they've opted for more simple, down-to-earth, hearty fare that is filling and comforting.

Ambience at Joe & Dough is no longer laid-back and rustic, but clean and modern. While still having open spaces and comfortable furniture for relaxing, their cafes are now more brightly lit, with attractive colours and decor. Service at Joe & Dough remains above your average coffee franchise. Staff are still friendly and welcoming, and quick to fulfill orders. However, they've since changed to purely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection of orders over the counter. Food at Joe & Dough still comprises mostly of European style drinks, sandwiches, and dessert pastries. Their menu variety has been expanded. Portions are decently sized for 1 person, and prices are relatively affordable as compared to elsewhere, budget about SGD $14 or so per person for a sandwich and a drink.

The Coconut Mocha (SGD $6.90) is a basic mocha, with robust smoky chocolatey sweet toasty flavour, garnished with chewy dessicated coconut, which lends a mild floral earthy sweet note. Interesting in a pleasant way.

Love the hearty Egg Mayonnaise & Cheese Croissant (SGD $5.80). The croissant bread is warm, with a crisp flaky exterior, and a light airy interior, holding buttery bready sweet notes. The chunky egg mayonnaise is creamy eggy sweet peppery spice in taste, while the slice of gooey melted cheddar cheese lends a salty cheesy flavour. Great breakfast snack.

Love the filling Tuna Mayonnaise, Dill & Capers Multigrain (SGD $8.50). The mulitgrain bread is warm, with a light crisp crunch to the exterior, and a spongy pourous interior, holding earthy bready sweet notes. The thick rich tuna fish mayonnaise is deeply earthy savoury sweet salty in taste, while the garnish of smooth dill cream and firm capers lend a sharp tangy zesty sour contrast of flavour. Completed with crisp lettuce with vegetal sweet flavour. Good breakfast sandwich.

Swissbake is a bakery that produces traditional European breads and pastries. But Swissbake also has a line of cafes that offer tasty, value for money meals, inspired by the cuisines of Switzerland and Germany.

Ambience at the Swissbake cafes feature a modern, minimalist decor. The setting is relaxed, with magazines and newspapers for browsing, although there isn't much space between tables, so you might pick up on your neighbours conversations.

Service at Swissbake is polite, quick and efficient. Orders are taken and fulfilled quickly, just as tables are also cleared promptly. The only issue I have is that the knives provided by Swissbake aren't sharp enough to cut / saw through meat, and are better used for tearing the meat apart instead. It is more inconvienent if you're eating sausages or meatloaf.

Being an artisinal bakery, the baked goods and desserts at Swissbake are of a better quality. Generally, the food at Swissbake is quite decent, and value for money, with most main dishes costing around SGD $10 each. Tea break sets cost around SGD $7 each. The menu is somewhat limited though.

Overall, Swissbake is among one of the better choices for baked goods, as well as Swiss Rosti and German Sauerkraut.

Though a little thin in consistency, the Beef Goulash has a good amount of beef and vegetables, and is quite tasty. The Mushroom Soup was thick and hearty, though it only had very tiny pieces of mushrooms.

A large slice of Bread & Butter Pudding, served with a small scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and topped with Strawberry Sauce. This dessert is warm, sweet, soft and moist... Among one of the better ones I've had!

The Rosti With Bockwurst is served with a thick meaty sausage, and the rosti has melted swiss cheese covering it. The sausage casing is somewhat thick, and the knives at Swissbake are slightly inadequate for cutting straight through. But it's well cooked, with a satisfying snap. The rosti is well cooked, with a slightly crisp exterior, but still soft inside.

The Smoked Kassler With Sauerkraut, Potato Salad And Bread is a German dish. Kassler is a type of German smoked ham, and this dish featured 3 meaty slices of Kassler. The Sauerkraut was nicely done, though hidden under the meat. I liked the Potato Salad as well, but this with the combination of Bread And Butter got a little too starch heavy.

The regular sized pies are quite decent, and have a good amount of filling. I liked that the ratio of meat, vegetables and starch is just right, without much 'filler'. Swissbake also offers mini versions of their pies.

The Chicken Ham And Spinach Quiche is available in regular size or mini size. I generally find the regular size to be better, because there is more filling within.

The Pineapple Bar has a nice crisp and flaky pastry shell, and sweet pineapple chunks within. I only wish it could be more tightly packed, as it has quite a lot of empty air, although the pastry is nicely coated inside with pineapple sauce.

I love the taste of the Chocolate Danish Stick! It's crispy and flaky, and the chocolate is rich and sweet!

The Parisian Butter Croissant is good, but not the best I've had. While crispy and flaky outside, the inside isn't as soft and fluffy as it could be, and it doesn't have a rich buttery taste.

The Hot Cross Bun is best consumed when hot, or it loses meaning. =) I like that it's studded with raisins, which gives it a nice burst of flavour, but the bun itself is just average.

The Swiss Easter Rice Tart is an Easter seasonal recipe from Switzerland. Sweet and tasty, it's made with a filling of long grain rice, milk, sugar, eggs, raisins and butter.

The Swiss Apple Tart is prepared akin to a typical Apple Tart, with apple slices laid out in rows, then baked till caramalised. Lovely, and the crust was nicely buttery and flaky too.

The Ham And Egg Sandwich is quite a large portion, although the ratio of bread is a little too much. But the ingredients are fresh and tasty. The Turkey Ham And Cheese Sandwich was nice, and very filling, though the amount of cheese made it more salty. The Beef Pastrami Sandwich had nicely flavoured, beef slices, though it wasn't exactly pastrami quality.
