Malacca Street Food - Part 1
Malacca Street Food is part of the larger cuisine of Central Malacca, Malaysia, yet it still has distinct characteristics which set it apart. The Peranakan community is strongly represented here, and their Baba-Nyonya cuisine is amongst the most iconic dishes of the city. There is also strong representations of Chinese, British, Indian, and Malay cuisines here, with American and Korean cuisines gaining popularity. The well known stalls here have been selling the same, signature dishes for a long time.

Nice Spice Pies
(Ratings: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 = Worst and 10 = Best)
Overall: 7
Ambience & Setting: 6
Food & Beverage: 8
Service: 5
Value for Money: 9
Spent about SGD $5 per person.
Opened in April 2015 within the Simpang Bedok Market Place, SPies & All Things Nice serves unique gourmet pies and delectable dessert tarts with Asian inspired flavours. Hand made fresh daily in-store, the savoury and sweet pies / tarts offered by SPies & All Things Nice are absolutely delicious!
Ambience at SPies & All Things Nice is similar to the rest of the stalls here, on account of the shared casual seating, and clean, bright atmosphere. Love their brand name, which is inspired by the classic nursury rhyme 'What Are Little Boys Made Of?', and spices. The products are clearly displayed and labelled, and the menu is also legible. Walk past the stall, and you'll be drawn in by the colourful Peranakan decor and fragrant aroma of baking!
Service at SPies & All Things Nice is decent. Largely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection done over the counter. The majority of customers get takeaway, but if you can also choose to dine in. Staff, being involved in the creation of pies / tart daily, are very knowledgable about the ingredients and taste of their baked goods, and can make good recommendations. Beyond that, there's very little other interaction with staff.
Food at SPies & All Things Nice is all about savoury pies, and sweet tarts. Their pies / tarts are all Asian flavoured, containing local Singaporean or Peranakan spices and ingredients. Generally, I find their pies / tarts to be of excellent quality and taste, much better than most other places. Portions are small, they usually create it mini-sized. Prices are decent and affordable, budget about SGD $5 per person, and sharing is recommended.
The quaint Peranakan decor and aroma of freshly baked pies / tarts is incredibly intoxicating, attracting passer-bys.
Their savoury pies and sweet tarts are tasty, and made with fresh premium ingredients daily. Also, their products contain no monosodium glutamate (MSG) or other preservatives. Best eaten fresh and hot!
The pretty Almond Longan Tart (SGD $2.50) features chunks of fruity longan set within a smooth, rich almond flavoured custard, topped with candied cherries and crushed almond bits. Tastes very close to the actual Almond Longan dessert, so lovely.
Drawing inspiration from the Pulut Hitam dessert, the Pulut Hitam Tart (SGD $2.50) is fragrant with the aroma of soft black glutinous rice, mixed with gula melaka / palm sugar, coconut milk, topped with dessicated coconut. The filling is sweet and satisfiying, incredibly good. Highly recommended!
The Babi Pongteh Pie (SGD $2.50) is a decadent Peranakan inspired pie, with fresh slices of pork collar, fatty pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, and potatoes, braised till soft in an aromatic braising sauce of soy sauce, preserved beans, and spices. Tasty with the savoury pork and spices, but I did feel the meat could have been slightly more tender.
The Beef Rendang Pie (SGD $2.50) is very spicy! Tender beef brisket and beef rump is stewed in a fiery concoction of spices, including lemongrass, chili, kaffir lime leaves, and coconut gravy. Savoury, with good meaty / beef flavour, the heat from the spices kicks strongly, and leaves a lingering burn. Get a cool drink with this!
A popular favourite, the Chicken Laksa Pie (SGD $2.50) has chunky cubes of chicken and potatoes, stewed in a secret recipe laksa sauce, along with a slice of hard boiled egg. I must admit the flavour is incredibly similar to a normal bowl of laksa, you get the taste of the spices and richness of the coconut gravy. Very good, highy recommended!
Their latest creation is the Thai Basil Chicken Pie (SGD $2.50), with chunks of chicken and shiitake mushrooms in a fragrant, creamy Thai inspired basil sauce, topped with a leaf of fried basil. Decent taste, but my least favourite of all their savoury pies.
They also created a Kueh Pie Tee Chili Crab (SGD $5.50) in celebration of Singapore's Jubilee Year / SG50! The crisp, non-greasy shells are tasty, without becoming soggy from the filling of stewed turnip, egg, and chunks of deshelled crab, all coated in a spicy chili crab gravy. Good!

Decent Mid-Range Halal Buffet
(Ratings: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 = Worst and 10 = Best)
Overall: 7
Ambience & Setting: 6
Food & Beverage: 7
Service: 8
Value for Money: 7
Spent about SGD $48 per person.
Located within Village Katong Hotel, Katong Kitchen is the in-house dining restaurant that caters mainly to hotel guests. Offering an international buffet selection for breakfast, lunch, and dinner timings, Katong Kitchen is a decent, mid-range halal buffet option. Their speciality is Peranakan cuisine, as befits the theme of the hotel.
Ambience at Katong Kitchen is patterned after the hotel's Peranakan theme. Largely open and communal in concept, the small dining area is tightly packed, with solid, modern furniture. The buffet spread surrounds the entire main area, making it easy to walk around and see all the appetizing options. I like that you don't get the smell of cooking / cleaning. However, I find the annex alcove seating to be rather odd, located in the corridor before the conference rooms and along the pathway to the swimming pool.
Service at Katong Kitchen is very good. Staff are welcoming and friendly, efficient in seating you, as well as in cleaing away dirty or empty plates. I like that the staff here are professional and knowledgable as well, able to interact well with guests. We ordered a cake for takeaway, but the staff politely informed us that the cake we chose is best eaten on the spot... Impressive service! Katong Kitchen staff also went out of their way to accomodate several requests we had, and overall, we were so impressed that several of my colleagues have returned because of the service.
Food at Katong Kitchen is buffet style at the main meal timings, with an International selection. There is a small Japanese, seafood, and Western selection of food, but the main highlight at Katong Kitchen is their Peranakan options, as well as the wide variety of Asian desserts. Prices are comparable to other buffets, budget about SGD $48 ++ per person. Furthermore, as Katong Kitchen is Halal certified, they're a good option for a buffet when dining with Muslim friends. Regulars, and customers of other Far East establishments, can get significant discounts, which makes this even more worthwhile!
The decor is distinctly Peranakan, in line with the overall theme, concept, and history of Village Katong Hotel.
Love the presentation of the Sambal Belacan in a stone mortar and pestle bowl. It's homemade, and the taste is pretty good, savoury and sharp with a solid spicy kick.
The Mee Goreng stood out for me, for its savoury, spicy taste, fragrant aroma, and generous portion of ingredients.
The Mutton Rendang is unique, and possibly among the best dishes I tried here! Instead of the typical Malay style Mutton Rendang, the chef has prepared this in Perankan style, with the use of curry leaves. This results in a slightly sweeter, more aromatic dish, you taste the savoury aspect first, followed by the spices. Excellent!
You can Create Your Own Rojak here, guided by the instructions available at the counter. I find the sauce to be pretty good, properly thick and richly flavoured.
There is a small but fresh selection of seafood, but the real star is the various Asian dipping sauces they provide to go along with the seafood. I particularly like their spicy seafood chili dip!
The Rotisserie section has several cuts of meat available. Of this, the stand out meats were the Roast Beef, thick but tender and moist, a nice medim rare with a slight hint of pepper taste. The Chicken Chop was very good as well, marinated in Asian spices, and fragrant with the aroma of curry, though a little thin in size.
The display of Assorted Peranakan Kueh is so pretty! And quite decent as well, I especially liked the Kueh Lapis Legit / Spekkoek, the Onde-Onde, the Kueh Ko Swee, and the Kueh Salat.
The Bread & Butter Pudding was a pleasant surprise. Much lighter in texture than expected, the bread is soft and fluffy, and the addition of strawberry jam between the layers of bread lent a sweet, fruity taste.
The Durian Pengat was very good, with a greater ratio of the fruit to cream, making it smooth yet chunky. Pity they only serve it in small shot glasses, we had to get several to satisfy the craving!
Celebrated a collegue's birthday here, and we ordered the Chocolate Fudge Cake. Above average, the cake was moist with rich chocolate taste, and the fudge was properly thick and sweet. The strawberries were fresh, but several of my colleagues thought the macarons were overly sweet.
