Those who grew up in the 80s - 90s will remember our electronic game consoles fondly. And among those classic nostalgic games was Tetris, where you had to manoeuvre the continuous flow of falling blocks of different shapes (called Tetriminos) to form a complete horizontal or vertical line, thus eliminating it from the screen. Tetris was designed by Russian computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. To celebrate this iconic game, luxury Swiss watchmaker RJ Romain Jerome, together with The Tetris Company LLC, released the RJ Romain Jerome Tetris DNA Watch in August 2015, as part of the RJ Romain Jerome Collaborations - Generational Icons watch line.

Set within the RJ Romain Jerome Moon Invader black PVD-coated titanium case with black rubber strap, the hand-brushed watch dial contains a strikingly colourful Tetris game screen in session. Each Tetrimino block is crafted from a combination of 4 "Clou de Paris" colored anodized aluminum, and individually set by hand. This gives the RJ Romain Jerome Tetris DNA Watch a visually appealing 3-dimensional effect.

A custom made Tetris medallion is fitted on the case back of the RJ Romain Jerome Tetris DNA Watch, inscribed with "84 Lines", which points to the number of watches from this limited edition series (84 pieces were made), as well as the year the Tetris game was released, in 1984. Water resistant up to 30 meters, the RJ Romain Jerome Tetris DNA Watch can be suitable for everyday use, and it's also easy to tell time.

Overall, the RJ Romain Jerome Tetris DNA Watch is a showcase of artistic creativity, more so than mechanical genius, though it's a fine limited edition specimen of a watch. A suitable addition to the RJ Romain Jerome Collaborations - Generational Icons watch line, this watch looks suitable for everyday use, due to its rather durable watch case.

Our lovestruck hero stands on the tower of Notre Dame Cathedral, stepping slowly out to the terrace as the last rays of sunlight fade and the day turns to dusk. As the bells chime, a shooting star appears in the sky, and our young hero makes a wish, bidding the star to carry it towards the Eiffel Tower, where his lover awaits. This is the story of the Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Poetic Wish Watch, a masterpiece of art that tells a poetic story through a timepiece.

Source Credits: Van Cleef & Arpels

The 3 integrated automatons within the Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Poetic Wish Watch move in sync to tell time, pushing the limits of time-keeping technical prowess. When the 5-minute repeater is activated via the crown, the male figure moves horizontally along the terrace, indicating the hour by the position of his feet. The shooting sky in the sky moves along the curve of the watch, to indicate the nearest 5 minutes. Finally, a small cloud moves horizontally towards the male figure, and when it meets him, the bells chime, a wish is made (you can make one too), and the 3 automatons resume their initial positions. If this is all too complicated, you could always turn the watch over, where the rear sapphire crystal back window has a subdial, with an hours and minutes display, that allow you to tell time.

The Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Poetic Wish Watch design is an art nouveau / fine art masterpiece, set with exceptional stones, precious materials, and an extremely complex watch movement. With 5 patents to its name, the Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Poetic Wish Watch has a length of 300mm, a width of 440mm, and a height of 225mm, set within a case of sycamore and maple wood, in-laid with white mother-of-pearl marquetry work. Fits nicely under a gentlemen's cuff, though it also takes some courage to wear such a striking artistic timepiece!

It's reported that the watch original creator, reowned watchmaker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, spent 7 and a half years assembling all 458 parts of this complex mechanism. Today, hundreds of hours are still required to complete a piece, the complex 3 dimensional dial architecture is engraved by hand, the miniatures are carefully hand painted, mother-of-pearl and white gold is sculpted and set, and diamonds are set in the dial and case. Created as a set of 2, this watch showcases the male perspective of the love story in Paris, France. There is also a female perspective available.

While Van Cleef & Arpels has long been known for their artistic timepieces featuring flowers, animals, nature, or fairies, they've taken it a step further with their Poetic Complications collection, which tells a story and evokes emotions. This imaginative artistry is encapsulated in the Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Poetic Wish Watch, a story of longing, a tale of hopeful young love. Truely a hallmark of art, time, and story telling.

Kawada Co. Ltd, the company behind the iconic micro sized construction blocks known as Nanoblock, have used their creation to branch out into various fields, such as art sculptures, making the Nanoblock more than just a simple toy. In 2012, they launched the Nanoblock Time Watch line, making the Nanoblock a unisex fashion accessory.

Source Credits: Nanoblock Time

The unisex Nanoblock Time Watch is foremost, a fashion statement. Partially crafted out of Nanoblocks, the watch allows one to customise the straps and the border of the watch face, with colourful, vibrant Nanoblocks. A total of 50 pieces of Nanoblocks are bundled together with the watch for this purpose. This allows for an endless amount of designs, limited only by your creativity, ranging from practical to whimsical. In fact, the Nanoblock Time Watch may not need to be worn, it can be displayed solely as decor!

As a timepiece, the Nanoblock Time Watch is down to earth practical. It does not have the intricacies or durability of more premium, handcrafted watches, but its practical Japanese functionality means it serves its purpose well as a timepiece. Movement is smooth, with clear readability despite the bright colours, and it has light water-resistant capability, enough to withstand rainy weather.

Besides the traditional square casing of the Nanoblock Time Watch, a circle casing is also available. However, this is less customisable. Prices for the Nanoblock Time Watch are relatively affordable, mid-range for a fashion statement watch, budget about SGD $120 per watch. This watch may often be sold for about 40% less during sale periods, which makes it a great gift!

Source Credits: Nanoblock Time

Overall, the Nanoblock Time Watch is a good, mid-range, unisex timepiece, perfect for all ages, and the young at heart. Its bold, vibrant designs, and ability to be customised make this watch stand out. Practicality and functionality are decent, good enough to perform as a timepiece, though don't expect too much durability out of it. It may be worth buying as a collection for display purposes.
