Opening in October 2018, Habitat By HonestBee is operated by online grocery and food delivery business HonestBee. The world's 1st tech-enabled grocery and dining concept, and HonestBee's 1st foray into the brick-and-mortar store, Habitat By HonestBee is a 60,000 square foot warehouse space that has been converted into a multi-sensory, all-in-one supermarket, restaurant, and retail innovation lab. Habitat By HonestBee leverages technology, yet still inspires human engagement and interaction. However, their insistence of cashless payment via their app is rather limiting.
Ambience at Habitat By HonestBee is open, modern, and casual. The bright, airy place is warmly lit, the high ceiling and colourful vibrant artwork lending a playful whimsy. Comfortable wooden furniture, lounge chairs, booth seats, and high tables, are neatly arranged amongst rows of grocery shelves, fresh produce counters, and food counters, welcoming you to peruse the products as you dine. There is a lively, buzzing atmosphere of activity, yet it still manages to feel relaxed and unhurried as you watch people go by. Suitable for lingering, and I have since returned multiple times. Excellent!
Service at Habitat By HonestBee is completely self-service, enabled through technology, specifically, the HonestBee mobile app. All food counter menus and grocery products are listed on the app, and you order and make payment via the app. In fact, Habitat By HonestBee is completely cash-free but limited, forcing all customers to solely use the HonestBee app for payment. Diners are also expected to clear their own trash after a meal, though I note staff do clean tables fairly efficiently. Besides the cashless checkout experience (AutoCheckout), there is also a fully-automated, robotic packing and collection point (RoboCollect). Despite all this technology, I find staff to be helpful, engaging, and proactive in rendering assistance and explanations, particularly those who require help navigating the app.
Food at Habitat By HonestBee lives up to its philosophy of Eat Fresh, Shop Fresh. Not only is everything freshly prepared to order, much of the ingredients are fresh, direct from the produce that lines their shelves. As a result, their dishes are generally delicious. Food counters are a mix of their own in-house labels, with several invited 3rd party operaters. Portions are large for individuals, and can be shared, but prices remain affordable, cheaper than a normal cafe (because they are their own supplier). Budget about SGD $25 per person for a meal here. However, I wish there was a greater selection of Asian food, desserts, and small bites.

Didn't expect the Bread Chocolate Orange Loaf Tasting, Yotsuba Butter, Straits Preserves Singapore Sling Marmalade (SGD $11.80) to be served in such a large, generous portion. The chocolate orange bread loaf is made with CJ (CheilJedang) Korean wheat flour, Valrhona 55% dark chocolate, Yotsuba milk, Échiré butter, orange peel, salt, sugar, and fresh bread yeast. The result is a soft, chewy, spongy bread, with bold tastes of chocolate and orange, having a fruity sweet chocolatey flavour. We got it toasted in the Magimix Vision toaster, the world's first see-through toaster.
Served with luscious, creamy smooth unsalted Yotsuba butter, which is made with fresh raw milk from Tokachi, Hokkaido, Japan. This lent a delicate milky buttery sweet flavour. There was also a dollop of Straits Preserves Singapore Sling Marmalade (containing orange, pineapple, lime, lemon, and cherry), with a sticky gelatinous texture, and a fruity sweet tropical citrus flavour, although this contrasted the flavours of the bread. Overall, this was delicious, and I would return to have it again.

Love the French Raclette Toast With 20-Month Aged Jamon Serrano Ham, Smoked Duck And Coriander Sourdough Bread (SGD $19). Served with a side of fresh mesclun salad and truffle oil potato chips, the star is the gooey raclette cheese, torched and scraped over the toasted bread. Garnished with salty savoury strips of dry cured, 20-Month Aged Jamon Serrano Ham, which complements the bold flavour of the cheese. There is a choice of bread, we got the Smoked Duck And Coriander Sourdough Bread, a unique sourdough bread made from Ba Ria-Vung Tau Vietnamese strong flour, salt, smoked duck, coriander, and fresh yeast. This has a slightly smoky savoury salty sour bready flavour. Good!

The Little Neck Clams And Bacon Linguine (SGD $12.50) features a base of nearly al-dente linguine pasta noodles, tossed with garlic, clam stock, and white wine, having a lovely aroma. Garnished with a generous portion of fresh, meaty local-sourced little neck clams, juicy cherry tomatoes, and tender strips of pork Dutch bacon. Overall flavour profile is boldy salty savoury, followed by vegetal sweet herbal notes. Would have liked the pasta to be more al-dente, and perhaps with the option of being spicy, but otherwise, this is still a satisfiyingly tasty and filling dish.

The Chicken Puttanesca Penne (SGD $14) features a base of nearly al-dente penne pasta noodles tubes, tossed in a bright, vegetal sweet savoury plum tomato, garlic, and Italian parsley sauce. Garnished with tender chicken chunks, firm green olives, juicy cherry tomatoes, and soft bits of anchovy fish. Overall flavour profile is robust sweet earthy, with undertones of savoury salty notes. Enjoyed this more than I expected, partly due to the freshness of the plum tomato sauce, which is thin but holds good flavour.

The iconic Chinese Cantonese roast meats brand Char has been invited to set up shop here, and they serve up their signature Char Siew Noodles (SGD $8). Bouncy thin egg noodles and crunchy vegetal sweet bok choy / chinese cabbage are tossed in a light soy sauce gravy, garnished with their signature Brazilian pork belly roasted to perfection, with a crisp outer char and a succulent inner bite, in equal parts fat to lean pork meat. Completed with a soft, shoyu / soy sauce braised egg. Bold savoury salty flavours throughout. Good!

The Fish Maw Pork Rib Soup With Yam Rice (SGD $11.90) was just average. The Fish Maw Pork Rib Soup has generous portions of tender meaty savoury pork ribs, spongy fishy threadfin fish maw, bouncy earthy dried shiitake mushrooms, and a savoury sweet peppery spice flavour from the Sarawak white pepper. However, the Chinese herbs only lent a light, delicate flavour. Lacks that robust edge, seems to only be single boiled instead of double boiled. At least the Yam Rice is nicely fragrant, with fluffy yam / taro infused white rice, tossed with long beans, dried shrimp, and Beijing cabbage. Overall, average.

There was a queue for the Live Canadian Oysters (SGD $11 for 6 pieces), and no wonder. These plump, juicy oysters have a slippery smooth texture and bright briny sweet salty flavour, very fresh and clean-tasting. The flavour profile lacks any bitter, mineral, or metallic tastes, and will appeal to most. Freshly shucked by staff on the spot. Good!

The Tiger Beer Battered Fish & Chips - Barramundi (SGD $13.50) is served in a huge portion, but is good enough not to share. Fresh, large fillets of boneless barramundi fish are coated in a classic Tiger Beer batter, then deep-fried till crisp on the outside, tender, moist, and flaky on the inside. Served with medium cut shoestring fries, malt vinegar, lemon wedge, and a home made tartar sauce. Loved this classic British English flavour of sharp sour savoury bitter sweet salty, contrasted by creamy cool herbal notes. Rich in minerals such as selenium, zinc, calcium, and magnesium. Highly recommended!

Served with medium cut shoestring fries, malt vinegar, lemon wedge, and a home made tartar sauce. Loved this classic British English flavour of sharp sour savoury bitter sweet salty, contrasted by creamy cool herbal notes. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B6. Because this is a more expensive fish, the portion size is smaller than the others, making it less value for money.

The Grilled Australian Baby Octopus (SGD $14) is rather big in portion for an appetizer, and can serve as a small meal on its own. It features bouncy chewy grilled baby octopus, juicy grilled cherry tomatoes, crunchy red onions, tender micro-greens, soft chickpeas, and creamy mashed avocado, dressed with balsamic vinegar and light soy sauce. Nicely layered flavours of earthy savoury sweet sour bitter zesty. I like that the serving of octopus is fairly generous too. Good!

Loved the Grilled Peruvian White Asparagus With Hollandaise Sauce (SGD $10). The large, juicy, crunchy stalks of white asparagus have a delicate vegetal sweet flavour, with a smoky char to the surface. Feels so luxurious and decadent. Good enough on its own, even without the creamy hollandaise sauce, which is an odd pairing as it slides off the smooth surface of the vegetable.

The Grilled Australian Rosedale Ruby Flap Beef Steak, Coriander Verde Sauce (SGD $22) is a satisfiying cut of ruby flap beef steak, which we ordered done to a medium-rare. Slightly bloody though. But the texture is nicely tender with a slight chew, and the beef holds good meaty savoury smoky flavour. Served with juicy sweet grilled tomatoes, crunchy vegetal sweet lettuce, and an earthy herbal coriander verde sauce. Decent enough, will satisfy most.

Terrible experience with the Grilled Australian Grass Fed Beef Striploin, Bearnaise Sauce (SGD $22), the worst dish I had here. The beef striploin steak was not thawed properly, neither was it cooked properly, was served cool, and had a slightly rubbery chew to texture. While it was still edible, and had a meaty savoury salty flavour, the execution is weak. Even the sides of juicy sweet grilled tomatoes, tender roasted baby potatoes, crunchy vegetal sweet lettuce, and a creamy tangy bearnaise sauce can't save this. Skip this.

Am a little disappointed with the Grilled Tajima Wagyu Beef Striploin MS 8 (SGD $42), ordered a medium, but it came medium rare. Shudder to think if they had undercooked or overcooked such a good wagyu beef striploin too, this has an MS 8 quality. Served with sides of roasted chat potatoes, roasted plum tomato, and a herb salad. Having had a few rounds of beef steak here, in various cuts, I believe the kitchen needs to be more consistent in grilling these to the right doneness.
