Opened in August 2015 by Alexis Bauduin, the halal-certified YOLO is all about "good food that’s good for you", striving to serve healthy, wholesome meals. Named after the popular saying "You Only Live Once", YOLO recipes are accredited by internationally acclaimed Dietician and IOC-certified Sports Nutritionist Jane Freeman. This means that besides being halal, their dishes are nutritionally balanced and healthy, with options for vegan and gluten-free diets, to allow everyone to #eatyourgoals.
Ambience at YOLO is retro industrial and casual. The warmly lit, open concept space is neatly lined with sturdy wooden funiture, with vibrant blue corrugated zinc and black square tiles adorning the walls. A semi-open kitchen offers a view when you're in queue, and touches of graffiti, like a skateboarding bull dog, complete the decor. The place can get a little warm and stuffy though.
Service at YOLO is completely self-service, from ordering, to payment, to collection of orders over the counter. That said, staff are helpful and display good product knowledge, helpfully offering suggestions if you let them know your dietery requirements. However, this also means the waiting time stretches longer than usual. I also observe that staff take awhile to clean and clear up tables when diners leave.
Food at YOLO is healthy and wholesome, with flavours being heavily Modern Singaporean and Asian inspired. Think dishes like laksa, bulgogi, or tom kha gai, but the healthy versions of them. Dishes are tasty, and generally grouped into 4 broad categories; Shape-Up, Energise, Glow, and Build. Portions are medium to large, hearty and filling for an individual. Prices are reasonable and affordable, eating here won't break the bank. Budget about SGD $14 per person for a meal here.

The Iced Mint Tea (SGD $4.90) is cool, refreshing, and makes a great thirst-quencher. This has a delicate floral herbal zesty sweet flavour from the ice lemon tea, mint leaves, and lemon slice. Has low sugar. Great on warm days.

The Fiery Ginger And Agave With Chipotle (SGD $5.90) features a blend of organic ginger, agave / sugar cane juice, and chipotle. This gives the cloudy beverage a zesty sweet spicy flavour. Still fairly refreshing, and nicely balanced that it's not overwhelming on the palate.

The Tomato Soup With Chicken, Avocado, Lentils (SGD $7.50) is really nice. A bright bowl of warm tomato soup, the broth thin but rich in vegetal sweet earthy flavour, filled with chunks of tender chicken, soft avocado slices, tender kidney beans, and soft yellow lentils. Has a slight kick of spicy heat which makes this more appealing. Lovely as a light meal, or as an appetizer.

The Energise - Coconut Chicken With Brown Rice & Veggies (SGD $7.50) is a take on the Thai dish of tom kha gai, with 580 calories, and is part of the 'Energise' signature menu. It features a fragrant base of brown rice, barley, light coconut milk, and lemongrass, stacked with tender vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato), crunchy cashew nuts, and boiled chicken slices, completed with a lime slice. Has a lovely herbal savoury sweet spice flavour.

The Glow - Laksa With Barramundi & Brown Rice Glass Noodles (SGD $12.50) is a take on the Singaporean dish of laksa, with 620 calories, and is part of the 'Glow' signature menu. It features slippery chewy brown rice noodles, tender flaky savoury sweet barramundi fish fillets, and chopped red chili, in a fragrant savoury spicy milky laksa broth. While the soup / broth still retains the lovely laksa leaf flavour, this version differs because it lacks the robustness of fermented shrimp, plus, it's much lighter on the palate.

Named after Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Build - Arnie's Meat Balls With Pasta & Eggplant (SGD $11.50) is a power packed take on the Italian dish of meat ball pasta, with 680 calories, and is part of the 'Build' signature menu. It features soft fusilli pasta noodles, which I wish were more al-dente, in a thin fruity sweet tomato sauce, along with chewy earthy black olives, tender vegetal sweet brinjal / eggplant / aubergine, and firm minced beef and white onion meat balls, which have a savoury salty meaty flavour. Overall, this dish didn't appeal to me.

The No-Grain Banana Bread (SGD $2.90) is gluten-free, and has a delicate fruity sweet flavour from the bananas, with a moist, soft texture. Lovely fragrance, quite addictive and delicious.

The Beetroot Brownie (SGD $2.90) has a moist, soft, yet dense texture, but is easily cut through. This reddish brown dessert cake has a vegetal sweet earthy flavour, less intense than a regular chocolate brownie, with slight hints of beetroot on the palate, but still remains delicious.
