Nostalgic Food & Music Festival

.....

Returning for its 2nd edition, the iconic inter-generational food and music festival Let's Go Jalan Jalan 2018 was held from 16 - 18 November 2018, at Singapore Turf Club @ Kranji Carpark B. Suitable for the young, young at heart, and even our furry friends, Let's Go Jalan Jalan 2018 featured over 130 food and merchandise booths, a total of 15 different local musician performances, and fun fringe activities including game booths, pyrography, kite painting, dog shows, horse & pony petting, go-karting, and more.

At Let's Go Jalan Jalan 2018, there was a line-up of 15 local bands / musicians performing throughout the day, such as mandopop singer Shelby Wang Xiao Min, indie rock musician Goose Angus Sham, singer-songwriter Diana Nightingale / Diana Saad, the Christ Church Secondary School Boys' Bridgade Bagpipes Contingent, and more. The weekend afternoons were warm, so we kept cool with some refreshing Chang Beer.

Lots of our furry friends around. There was a Dog Fashion Parade - the WOOF! Fashion Pawgeant, where dogs strutted their stuff. And dog trainer Sunny Chong presented a talk and live demonstration on dog training, alongside his border collie Victoria. All the dogs so cute!

It's the Turf Club, so there were a couple of horses and their trainers around. The public had specific timeslots for Horse Petting and photo-taking.

At Stall 108 - AgniArt Personalise With Pyrography, the founders David Sharp and Heiko Schulze, who established AgniArt in August of 2018, were on hand to showcase their handmade wooden gift products, made using the art of pyrography (literally meaning ‘writing with fire’). These unique, personalised gifts are hand crafted, first carved, then torched with fire to create intricate patterns.

At Stall 207 - Hand Made Toys & Trinkets, the joint kiosk of Jassandra Nay, who established BunnyAndYarn in May 2015, and Christie La Fontaine, who established The Stitch Mama in August 2015, were showcasing their hand made craft toys, accessories, and trinkets, all made using the art of crochet. These cute gifts are colourful, vibrant, and lovely to hold.

At Stall 224 - Kite Painting, they were holding kite painting for both children and adults. Painted kites could be submitted for entry into the kite painting competition, and the contenders displayed their creativity in designing and painting their colourful kites.

The majority of stalls at Let's Go Jalan Jalan 2018 are food stalls, naturally. These do the most brisk business. Several are stalwart pop-up kiosks that make regular appearances at Pasar Malams / Night Baazars / Night Markets across Singapore, such as Stall 129 - The Raclette Factory. There were also several pop-up kiosks I'm seeing for the first time, such as Stall 95 - ZeroPlusOne, which impressed with their well-crafted sandwiches.

Let's be honest - few attend these kind of events and expect to find gastronomic delights. Most such offerings are either overpriced, over-the-top, underwhelming in quality, or under copious amounts of sauce / oil / food colouring. There were some decent options though, with 1 especially stand-out food kiosk mentioned above.

The Stall 186 - Hokkien Turnip Cake retailed this uncommon snack. Most would be familiar with the Chinese Cantonese version, which is sold in nearly all dim sum / yum cha shops, but the Chinese Hokkien Turnip Cake differs with its ingredients. The Hokkien Turnip Cake Original (SGD $2) consists of mashed daikon radish, stuffed with minced pork and tofu beancurd puff strips, in a savoury salty pork and soy sauce gravy, with a bouncy meaty chew to texture. The Hokkien Turnip Cake Spicy (SGD $2) just has the addition of chili paste to the mashed daikon radish, and to the gravy, giving it a sharp spicy flavour. Both version were tasty, and made for a good hand held snack.

The Stall 125 - Saiko retailed their signature Butter Brew (SGD $5). This luscious, alcohol-free, hand-brewed, delectable, butterscotch infused soda is topped with a layer of butterscotch cream. Has a fizzy, smooth, rich body texture, with a buttery floral sweet flavour. Feels so decadent and indulgent drinking this.

You know you'll get a good meal at Stall 80 - Thai Street Food - it's nameless, brandless, operated by Thai staff, cooking Thai street food, and looks straight out of a roadside stall from Bangkok, Thailand. The fragrant aroma of grilling wafts through the air, enticing all who pass. And the Moo Ping / Grilled Pork Skewers (SGD $5 for 3 skewers), while pricey, has that lovely meaty chewy texture with bold smoky savoury salty sweet flavour in the grilled pork belly. Makes me want to buy a flight ticket already.
