“Now I am going to let you into what has been a state secret up to now. This is a file which I call Albatross.” - Dr. Goh Keng Swee, 1996.

The Albatross File: Singapore's Independence Declassified 2026 exhibition lets visitors revisit the moments that led to Singapore's separation from Malaysia, through the footsteps of the founding leaders of Singapore, behind closed doors, on the complex journey from merger to separation. Contrary to the widely-held and popular descriptions of Singapore having been 'expelled' by Malaysia, the file offers a more nuanced look at how Singapore’s leaders like Dr. Goh Keng Swee played a part in proposing and facilitating Singapore's separation from Malaysia, and how the founding leaders reacted to and felt about it. Supplemented by newly declassified documents and oral history accounts, the exhibition explores the uncertainty, conviction, and tensions that defined 1963 to 1965 leading to the birth of an independent Singapore.
