For most men, grooming isn't something we'll spend too much time or money on. Especially when it comes to our hair. That's why heartland barbers are so common, and many shopping malls have express hair cut salons, offering a no frills, 10 minute, simple hair cut for just SGD $10 or under. Quick, cheap, convenient with no-fuss.

Some men however, perhaps the trendy, the fashionable, or the metrosexual, may want to go for better treatment for their hair. Thus, many high-end salons also offer unisex hair treatment for both men and women, with stylish ambience, fashionable stylists up-to-date on the latest in hair grooming and styling trends, and pampering like snacks, drinks, magazines, and even head massages. All for a price of course... such treatments can range from SGD $30 to SGD $100 or more.

MJ Tokyo Salon can thus be considered a mid-range hair salon. Not the best or most outstanding in hair treatment, but much better than the average barber or salon, and their price reflects the target group they're going for... The young working executives.

For those who want quick, cheap, convenient hair cuts, MJ Tokyo Salon offers the standard 10 - 15 minute hair cut, albeit at a slightly higher price of SGD $12. With the increased price, they do provide better quality service to match, with stylists able to recommend current trends. A fear some people have is that the barber will give them a bad hair cut, but as the MJ Tokyo Salon hair stylists have to complete training beforehand, a bad hair cut is never an issue. I also like their attention to detail, ability to recommend hair styles, and willingness to accomodate requests.

MJ Tokyo Salon also utilize more equipment for grooming after a hair cut. One thing that irritates many people is hair sticking to their body, or clothes after a hair cut. But MJ Tokyo Salon ensures a proper 'cleaning', using not only a hair dryer; but powder, cloth and, if you choose the SGD $15 cut and wash option, a full head shampoo and wash. Plus, you can choose to self-style your hair after the hair cut, as they provide a towel, hair dryer and hair gel. This is by far the most popular option at MJ Tokyo Salon, SGD $15 for a cut and wash which only takes 15 - 20 minutes, and you leave with hair-free clothes.

I've been visiting MJ Tokyo Salon regularly on a bi-monthly basis ever since they opened in 2010, as my hair grows relatively quickly. I usually opt for the slightly more indulgent SGD $20 cut and ice wash. Besides the standard cut and wash, this also includes a shampoo with their house signature 'ice wash', a minty fresh shampoo, and a 5 minute head massage. This option usually takes about 25 - 40 minutes.

With only 2 locations at the moment, MJ Tokyo Salon isn't very convenient, though both outlets are quite accessible. MJ Tokyo Salon also offers hair colouring services, but I've yet to try it.
