Located in the Daan District in downtown Taipei, Taiwan, just off the main road, is San Ho Yan Restaurant. Frequented mostly by local Taiwanese, San Ho Yan Restaurant offers modern Chinese / Taiwanese food, in a comfortable, modern setting. Their wallet friendly prices have also helped, the resturant is typically packed every night!

Ambience at San Ho Yan Restaurant is modern casual. The most obvious decor example is the white criss cross beams overhead, which act as both partitions and decorations, as well as lowering the height of the ceiling, giving a sense of cozy comfort. Bright lights spotlight the interior, and the smooth, wooden booth furniture is large and comfortable even for groups.

Service at San Ho Yan Restaurant is very good. Staff are assigned specific areas in the restaurant to serve, and I notice they either tend to hire good looking staff, or very charismatic, friendly staff. Staff can converse with you like friends, casual with some humor. Orders are taken and fulfilled quickly, and I like that the menu has both Chinese Mandarin and English descriptions.

Food at San Ho Yan Restaurant is an example of modern Chinese / Taiwanese cuisine, with roots in classic traditions. Familiar ingredients are used, but paired in different ways, or simply prepared differently. They still retain classic dishes on the menu to cater to the more traditional crowd though. Dishes are well portioned for communal dining, and pack good taste and flavour. Prices are affordable, on the lower end of a restaurant scale, making their food accessible to the masses.

The simple yet striking decor stands out in this place, and the relatively young, easy on the eye staff help as well.

I find most of the dishes to be pretty good, tasty, and enough for 3 - 4 people to share. Ingredients are fresh, and dishes are presented beautifully.

Pickled Cabbage In Sour Plum

Sweet & Sour Fish

Stir Fried String Beans

Shrimp Fried Rice

Stinky Tofu & Century Egg In Kung Pao Sauce

I liked the Sliced Pork Loin With Honey Mustard Sauce, with the cold, thinly sliced pork dipped into the sweet, tangy, honey mustard sauce, then paired with the dried cranberry. Lovely.

The Purple Gold Taro Yam Pastry was a surprising dessert pastry, and I loved how the exterior was still crisp, while the interior tasted of taro / yam ice cream!
