Located in an area famed for its roast chicken restaurants, Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji (福伯黃金雞) in Nantou, Taiwan, is among the more established brands. Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji has actually seen good success, and I understand they've expanded to several more outlets across the country. They offer a no-frills, rustic dining experience, so people come really on the strength of their food, in particular, the roast chicken.

Ambience at Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji is simple and rustic. The open but sheltered seating area is neatly packed with simple wooden and plastic furniture, and offers a view of the open kitchen where the team prepares food to order. Being open, the place can get really warm or cold depending on the weather, thus, it's more an eat-and-go place. Also, there will sometimes be insects flying around.

Service at Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji is decent. Staff can only converse in Chinese Mandarin, but are friendly. Partially self-service, as you'll have to help yourself to cutlery and drinks. If you can't speak or read Chinese Mandarin, visiting with a translator / digital translator is crucial, as even the menu is in the local language. I note staff are efficient are clearing away empty / dirty tables when diners leave, and display decent product knowledge when queried.

Food at Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji is rustic Chinese Taiwanese cuisine, a village type of feel. Dishes are simple but well-executed and tasty. Nothing fancy or modern here, just the kind of food the locals have been eating for centuries. Portions are sized for communal group dining, and served sit-down style. Prices are affordable, as locals dine here as well. Budget about NTD $220 / SGD $10 per person for a meal here. I recommend visiting Fu Bo Huang Jin Ji (福伯黃金雞) when in the area.

The Beer Taiwan Gold Medal (NTD $50 / SGD $2.50) pairs especially well with piping hot food, and is thirst-quenching on warm days.

Cracked open the Bamboo Baked Rice With Mountain Nuts (NTD $100 / SGD $5) to be greeted with an appetizing woody aroma. We scooped out the baked rice and mountain nuts, which has taken on a near glutinous sort of texture, being sticky and clumpy, but it's super tasty. The nuts lend a nice crunchy contrast to the softer rice.

The Mountain Vegetable With Mountain Nuts (NTD $150 / SGD $7) is a common dish around here. Simple too, with fresh and crunchy mountain vegetables (yes, that's really the name) stir-fried along with nuts, carrots, anchovies, and a little chicken stock, giving it a vegetal sweet salty savoury flavour. It's a satisfiying dish that is clean-tasting and refreshing to eat. Good!

The highlight here is their Roast Chicken (NTD $550 / SGD $25, whole). Incredibly juicy, tender, and fragrant from being slow roasted in a tandoor-like oven, the chicken meat holds good sweet savoury flavour. The chicken skin is the best part for me, super crispy, salty savoury, and with very little fat. Said fat is actually served as a bowl of chicken drippings on the side, made into a light soup / broth that is really decadent with its sweet savoury fatty flavour. Highly recommended!

The Fried Pig's Intestines With Spring Onions (NTD $150 / SGD $7) surprised us. It's clean-tasting, with a light savoury sweet flavour, from being cleansed with white vinegar and all-purpose flour, then stuffed with fresh spring onions. Served with a side of plum salt, which lends a nice touch of fruity salty taste. Enjoyed this. Good!
