A proud stalwart of refined Australian cuisine in Singapore's Robertson Quay since opening in September 2008, Boomarang Bistro & Bar is a cafe, a sports gastrobar, and a bistro, all-in-one. Managing Director of Boomarang Bistro & Bar, Martin McGettigan, shouldered through the global financial crisis of 2008 by offering a relaxing ambience for corporates and families, attentive service akin to a restaurant, and great quality Australian food at reasonable prices. Since then, they've maintained a consistent quality, and the crowds that regularly flock here is a testament.

The ambience at Boomarang Bistro & Bar is casual and relaxed, with a touch of outdoorsy. Occupying the floor space of 2 shops, the large and spacious bistro offers ample seating, with a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor al-fresco. Lit by ample natural sunlight during the day and warm overhead lights at night, the large wooden tables and chairs are decently comfortable. There's options for regular dining seats, high bar seats, and booth seats. Television screens playing various sports channels surround the place, and there are screening events for major games. Customers like to use the event space for corporate functions or social leisure activities; have seen people playing mahjong, scrabble, and board games here.

The service at Boomarang Bistro & Bar is polite and professional, with a touch of casual friendliness. Staff are observant, quick to spot guests and seat them. They display decent product knowledge, able to describe dishes, such as stating if something is gluten-free. Orders are fulfilled quickly, with minimal waiting time, even during peak periods. I note staff quickly clean up and turn around tables efficiently when diners leave; this also extends to clearing litter and dead leaves around the vast area, making the place look presentable at all times. Senior staff tend to engage in friendly banter with regular customers, although junior staff tend to come across as more timid. Also, rain and direct sunlight is an issue, as many seats are exposed to the elements.

The food at Boomarang Bistro & Bar consists of classic dishes from Australian, British English, American, and Italian cuisines. Served in typically large Australian sized portions for individuals, each dish is consistently well-executed, using fresh ingredients and simple techniques that showcase the natural flavours. Expect bold flavours, where each ingredient on the plate serves a purpose. Despite having a wide variety of dishes on the menu, they've managed to serve consistently delicious dishes all these years. However, prices are premium, higher than most cafes, and comparable to other restaurants. Budget about SGD $30 per person for breakfast, and about SGD $70 per person for dinner with a drink.

The star are the thick cut strips of kangaroo loin meat, seasoned with black pepper, tender and moist with a firm chew to texure, and bursting with meaty savoury salty flavour. Much less gamey than beef, but also less juicy. The dense chunky mashed sweet potato lends lovely vegetal sweet notes, while the fresh crisp rocket leaves / arugula have a vegetal bitter herbal flavour. Tucked within is a vibrant mound of beetroot relish, juicy and vegetal sweet sour, staining everything it touches. Completed with a rich black pepper gravy with sharp spice notes, and several dollops of creamy garlic aioli which lends a herbal sweet spice note. Good!
