Opened in 1961, Niimura is a respected restaurant beloved for its tonkatsu / breaded pork cutlet, made with Kagoshima Berkshire pork. Its long history and mastery of the dish has led many to recognise Niimura as being among the best tonkatsu / breaded pork cutlet in Tokyo, Kanto, Japan.

Ambience at Niimura is buzzing and lively. The space is neatly arrayed with functional furnishings; I got the counter seats facing the wall. The lighting is low however, making the place seem a little darker than it should be. Chatter abounds, amplified by the space.

Service at Niimura is rather transactional but polite. Ordering via the digital online system is easy via the multi-language option. There isn't much interaction with staff, though I note they clean up quickly when diners leave. Order fulfilment is decent, with just a short wait.

Food at Niimura is traditional Japanese cuisine, focused on tonkatsu / breaded pork cutlet. Each meal is made-to-order and served with fresh ingredients, yum. Portions are large for individuals. Prices are reasonable, budget about JPY ¥3,500 / SGD $31 per person.

Enjoyed the Teishoku / Set Meal (JPY ¥3,500) decided to splurge a little and get the premium option of kurobuta Kagoshima Berkshire pork. Generously breaded with panko bread crumbs, deep-fried, then finished in the oven, this is exquisitely tender with good flavour. Highly recommended!
