Founded in April 2025 by Ian Khoo and Neo Shen Wei, Basil King is a heartland Pad Kra Pao eatery inspired by the famous Thai casual restaurant Phed Mark (by YouTuber Mark Wiens). The concept at Basil King draws heavily on its inspiration, down to the colour scheme and nature of dishes, yet proves strong enough to stand on its own. The testament to the quality and consistency of dishes at Basil King is the fast and regular queue of diners, multiple takeaway orders, and rapid expansion across Singapore.

Ambience at Basil King is bright and casual, often shared with the coffee shop, food court, or hawker centre it's located in. The bright and attractive logo and signage, often compared to its inspiration, draws the eye. Fragrant wok-tossed meat aroma perfumes the surrounding air, tingling the senses with a touch of spice. The space is optimised for speed and quick order fulfilment.

Service at Basil King is fast and functional. Staff move rapidly, taking orders, stir-frying, packing or plating. Despite the queues, the team maintains a no‑nonsense rhythm that keeps the line flowing. The type of place that is brisk and transactional, quickly clearing the queues. Note that diners are expected to clean up after themselves given the coffee shop or food court setting.

Food at Basil King is classic Thai cuisine, focused on 1 specific dish of Pad Kra Pao, with a few side dishes to accompany. Made fresh to order, served within a few minutes, each dish is deliciously tasty and consistent in quality. Choose your level of chili heat, from level 1 to level 5. Portions are sized for individuals. Prices are affordable, budget about SGD $12 per person.

The Pad Kra Pao Moo Sap Khai Dao Sawng / Stir-Fried Holy Basil With Minced Pork And 2 Fried Eggs (SGD $7.90) is their house signature. Over a bed of fluffy soft moist steamed white rice with grainy earthy sweet flavour, is topped a generous portion of stir-fried minced pork with basil that is tender juicy in texture with robust meaty salty savoury herbal spice flavour. Finished with 2 fried sunny side up chicken eggs that are beautifully runny and soft with eggy savoury sweet flavour. Choose the level of spiciness between levels 1 to 5; I typically opt for level 2 or level 3, which has a punchy fiery kick that lingers for a bit. Highly recommended!

The Pad Kra Pao Nuea Khai Dao Saam Poh Pia / Stir-Fried Holy Basil With Beef And 3 Fried Eggs And Spring Rolls (SGD $12.80) features the same bed of fluffy soft moist steamed white rice with grainy earthy sweet flavour. However, it's topped with a generous portion of stir-fried sliced beef with basil that is tender juicy in texture with robust meaty salty savoury herbal spice flavour. Finished with 3 fried sunny side up chicken eggs that are beautifully runny and soft with eggy savoury sweet flavour, the luscious yolk going everywhere. Choose the level of spiciness between levels 1 to 5; I typically opt for level 2 or level 3, which has a punchy fiery kick that lingers for a bit. Added on 2 pieces of banana spring rolls, which were crispy crunchy outside and gooey soft inside from the mashed banana filling, carrying fruity earthy sweet savoury flavour. Highly recommended!
