True to its name, the botanical / nature themed Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique, which was opened in July 2016 by Edwin Lim, has a colourful, vibrant, yet elegant feel. Offering artisanal gelato flavours which incorporate fruit, herbs, spices, or flowers, Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique stands out for its unique tropical, South-East Asian nature inspired flavours.

Ambience at Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique is clean, brightly lit, and artistic. Soft pastel colours adorn the plain white walls, and imagery of the eponymous bird of paradise breed act as decor. The attractive gelato display draws the eye, while the fragrant aroma of fresh baked ice cream cones perfume the air. Note there is no seating here, this is a pure takeaway place, although they offer a standing counter.

Service at Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique is professional and patient. As a takeaway place, all ordering, payment, and collection is done self-service over the counter. Still, staff are engaging and friendly, offering greetings to guests upon entry. They display good product knowledge, and are well versed on the various ingredients in each gelato flavour. Staff even patiently accede to as many tasting samples as requested by customers.

Food at Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique is all about handcrafted, artisanal gelato flavours. Made using fresh fruit, herbs, spices, or flowers, the range of flavours here are novel and unique, varied and delicious enough to keep customers returning for more. Of note is the high quality and consistency of their gelato, which is well balanced and mild, light on the palate yet distinct in taste. Portions are sized for individuals, and prices are affordable. Budget about SGD $6 per person for a scoop of gelato here.

The deliciously crunchy and fragrant Thyme Cones are made from crisp folded waffle biscuits, infused with thyme. This gives it a subtle herbal taste. Lovely.

The Lychee Raspberry Gelato Cone (SGD $5.70) has a creamy smooth scoop of lychee and raspberry infused gelato. This gives it a floral sweet sour flavour, and I like the execution that keeps it light and delicate on the palate. Highly recommended!

The Spiced Pear Gelato Cone (SGD $5.70) has a creamy smooth scoop of gelato, made from Williams pear infused with cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. This gives it a fruity sweet spice flavour, really lovely. Well balanced in execution, neither flavour overwhelms the other, yet the taste is still distinct and novel. Unique. Highly recommended!

The Earl Grey & Lemongrass Gelato (SGD $4.70) has a scoop of gelato served in a cup. Lovely creamy smooth in texture, this has perk-me-up bergamot at the start, and calming zen lemongrass at the end. Overall flavour profile of earthy herbal sweet, and balanced in taste. Good!

The Midnight Gianduja Gelato (SGD $5.70) is a premium flavour, and costs more than a regular scoop of ice cream. Rich and creamy smooth texture, with a deep nutty sweet malty flavour from the Italian hazelnuts and dark Valrhona chocolate. Highly recommended!

Update Dec-2018: Been 1 year since I first visited Birds Of Paradise Gelato Boutique, and I've since returned multiple times. The ambience, service, and food quality, largely remains the same. However, they've now expanded beyond just gelato, with dairy-free options such as sorbet. Prices remain the same, but queues have since gotten longer.

The Peach & Rose Sorbet Cone (SGD $5.70) has a creamy smooth scoop of sorbet, made from pink peach infused with rose petals. Has a delicate fruity floral sweet flavour, like a touch from a rose. The Thyme Cone, a crisp folded waffle biscuit, still has that excellent crunch with a subtle herbal flavour. So lovely.
