Established in May 2012 by the En Holdings Group, Monster Curry is a casual Japanese eatery concept that specialises in Japanese curry - a rich, savoury, mildly spicy concoction that resembles a demi-glace brown sauce. The house-made Japanese curry at Monster Curry features a total of 14 different spices and vegetables, and takes a full 2 days to prepare, alternating boiling and resting, to derive a unique flavour found nowhere else.

Ambience at Monster Curry is simple and functional, barely. The warmly lit, cramped seating area is tightly packed with booths, in garish red and black colours, providing the bare minimum of comfort. There's little decor, beyond the house mascot and pictures of their dishes. While family-friendly, this is little more than an eat-and-go type of place.

Service at Monster Curry has passable standard for a casual eatery. Ordering is performed via a chit, which you hand over to staff. The menu is detailed, with clear pictures, so there's little opportunity for staff engagement, or need for product knowledge beyond the supervisor. Payment is self-service, over the counter. Staff are decently efficient at cleaning up when diners leave.

Food at Monster Curry is focused on Japanese curry rice or noodles. Their signature curry has 6 levels of spiciness - from 0 (not spicy) to 5 (super spicy). While their curry is consistently tasty, the execution of other ingredients vary. Monster Curry is also known for gigantic portions, plates that are 40cm in diameter, piled high with ingredients. Prices are value for money, budget about SGD $17 per person for a meal here.

The Mango Calpis Mocktail (SGD $4.80) features a blend of Calpis / Calpico milk-based beverage and mango juice. Served chilled in 2 distinct layers, with a garnish of lime wedge and mint leaves, you're meant to stir this well before drinking. Overall, the fruity sweet flavour of the mango juice is the most prominent.

The Mojito Shiquasa (SGD $4.80) is a refreshing thirst quencher, made with Japanese limes from Okinawa prefecture, Japan. The lime is known as 'shequasar', and has a refreshing tangy zesty sour zing to it. Folklore says it helps in regulating blood sugar levels.

Pretty expensive for a Soft Drink Pepsi Black (SGD $2.80), even though it's got 0 calories, and supposedly healthier.

Got a side order of Onsen Egg (SGD $1.50), which was decently executed, with a wobbly soft texture, and good eggy sweet flavour. The egg yolk was partially solidified and partially runny, could be better.

The Pork Katsu Curry (SGD $13.80) features a base of aromatic fluffy sticky Japanese white rice, served with a mound of fresh crisp shredded lettuce dressed with sesame sauce giving it a nutty vegetal sweet flavour, crunchy pickled daikon radish with a sharp sour refreshing flavour, and a large breaded pork loin katsu. The pork is slightly crisp on the outside, with a tender, slightly firm inside, and a good amount of fat on the edges, giving it a succulent savoury salty flavour.

The star is the rich Japanese curry, with bold savoury flavour, not overly salty, that has a hint of toasted caramel (which is one of the ingredients). Laced with your choice of spicy chili, the level 3 I tried has a light lingering burn that builds slowly, but doesn't numb the palate. Overall, good.

The Teriyaki Chicken Curry With Tori Karaage (SGD $20.30) features a base of aromatic fluffy sticky Japanese white rice, wrapped in a thin egg omelette, served with a mound of fresh crisp shredded lettuce dressed with sesame sauce giving it a nutty vegetal sweet flavour, crunchy pickled daikon radish with a sharp sour refreshing flavour, a flat chicken fillet drizzled with teriyaki sauce, and medium sized deep-fried tori karaage / breaded chicken meat balls. The chicken has a slightly crisp skin, with a tender but dry chicken meat, though the savoury salty sweet flavour of the teriyaki sauce help it along. In contrast, the tori karaage / breaded chicken meat balls were good, with a juicy bite and crisp crunch, holding good savoury sweet salty flavour. Served with their signature Japanese curry.

The aptly named Sea Monster Curry (SGD $26.80) features a base of aromatic fluffy sticky Japanese white rice, served with a mound of fresh crisp shredded lettuce dressed with sesame sauce giving it a nutty vegetal sweet flavour, crunchy pickled daikon radish with a sharp sour refreshing flavour, a moist flaky large dory fish fillet coated in crisp batter, 2 tender flaky salmon fish fillets coated in crisp batter, 2 bouncy juicy fried prawns / shrimp, and 2 bouncy juicy tempura prawns / shrimp. The dory fish fillet is slighty sweet savoury, almost flat without the curry. The salmon fish fillets is nicely savoury sweet, and is probably the best component of this dish for me. The prawns / shrimp are lovely and sweet savoury, rather clean-tasting, and the tails come off easily. Served with their signature Japanese curry.
