Established in February 2015 by celebrities Cynthia Koh, Michelle Chong, and Daniel Ong, in partnership with the team behind Rookery, Tab, and Suprette, the playfully named Mischief is a casual gastrobar that promises delicious fusion American style street food with South East Asian street flavours. A well-regarded beacon of nightlife within Singapore's Esplanade - Theatres On The Bay, Mischief celebrates the communal nature of street food, encouraging diners to eat with their fingers, dress as they wish, and have a good time.
Mischief Exterior |
Mischief Interior |
Ambience at Mischief is casual and relaxed. The interior is largely taken up by a large bar counter and game machines, from electronic darts to air hockey to beer pong. As a result, indoor seating is limited. The unsheltered exterior hosts most of the seating, suitable for large groups. As the outdoor al-fresco area is exposed to the elements, rain or haze are problematic; staff say there's little choice but to run for shelter. Still, it's beautiful on cool evenings, and there are usually live bands performing nearby. Mischief also screens major sporting events, making it a great place to catch matches with friends.

Service at Mischief is efficient but transactional. Staff perform duties quickly, from seating guests to taking orders, but display cursory product knowledge of the menu, with little engagement. They are kept busy though, attending to many tables, so it's anything but relaxed for them. Cleaning up is performed quickly when diners leave, so the place usually looks presentable, however, I wish they would more regularly offer to clear finished plates from a crowded table (they occasionally do). There were times it was faster for us to help ourselves to fresh plates and cutlery, as opposed to waiting for staff to bring it over.
Seating Outdoors |
Seating Indoors |
Food at Mischief is American inspired, with some South East Asian flavours. Think burgers, bar snacks, and beer. As a gastrobar, the menu largely comprises communal sharing plates portioned for groups, with quality being decently passable to good. Don't expect gourmet here, but do anticipate digging in with your hands. Quality and taste is fairly consistent, and the range of alcohol is varied enough to suit most. Prices for food are affordable and reasonable, benchmarked to most cafes, but drinks will naturally set you back. Budget about SGD $62++ per person for a hearty meal with several rounds of drinks.

The Beer Kronenbourg Blanc Tower (SGD $55.90) features 3 litres of this Belgian white ale. It has a bright golden colour, aromas of lemon citrus, mango, and grains, with a light, clean, crisp body that has sharp carbonation. Taste is of wheat, banana, orange zest, and coriander, sweet and fruity with a light touch of spice. Finish is light, lingering, and dry. Easily drinkable, perfect for warm weather.

The Cocktail Coronarita (SGD $22) features an entire bottle of Beer Corona, up-end into a strawberry slushie. This results in a refreshing, fruity sweet tangy beverage, whose bright and fizzy notes render it delicious and addictive. Voted our favourite drink during our visit. The beer is light enough that you can barely taste it, but it does lend a lively backdrop. Highly recommended!

The Cocktail Mochatini (SGD $22) features a blend of Baileys Irish Cream liqueur, Kahlúa coffee liqueur, and fresh espresso coffee. The gut-busting Atomic Fries (SGD $14) features a base of medium thick potato fries that are crisp outside and fluffy inside. Coated in a piquant blend of sriracha mayonnaise, nacho cheese sauce, shichimi togarashi 7-spice mix, spring onions, and furikake seasoning. All things considered, the Crackling Pork Belly (SGD $12) is just decent. The tender strips of pork belly are roasted with Maldon sea salt, served with a side of crunchy juicy pickled gherkins with sharp sour vegetal flavour, and a grainy Thai style dipping sauce of whole grain mustard, garlic, white onions, chili, and oregano. Have had better elsewhere, but if you're here, this is an alright choice.

Loved the Buttered Clams (SGD $18), with the 500g of Korean flower clams having a plump, meaty tender chew. The rich gravy consists of a blend of white wine, sauteed garlic, lightly browned butter, salt, furikake seasoning, and parsley. This imparts a bold earthy milky salty savoury spice flavour to the natural sweet notes of the clams. The broth is drinkable, so delicious. Highly recommended!

No secret that we're taken with the Slow Cooked Wagyu Beef Brisket (SGD $32). Served with sides of fresh crunchy lettuce and crisp shoestring fries, the star is the incredibly tender Grade A4 wagyu beef brisket, which is coated with a black pepper crust, infused with liquid smoke, and slow-cooked for 24 hours. As a result, the beef brisket turns really tender, coming apart with a light chew, and holds a robust depth of meaty peppery spice savoury flavour. Highly recommended!

Hold your horses, because it's The Chicken Farm (SGD $48)! This 4-person sharing platter is perfect for bar snacks, served with house buffalo chicken wings, Singapore style prawn paste chicken wings, nacho cheese coated popcorn chicken, and nacho chips topped with salsa and guacamole. The respective chicken wings have moist tender chicken meat that comes off the bone easily, the buffalo chicken wings being sweet spicy in flavour, while the prawn paste chicken wings were savoury salty in flavour. The small nuggets of popcorn chicken alternated between moist and dry, but the creamy nacho cheese sauce lends it good depth of cheesy salty flavour. The nacho chips have to be eaten quickly while crisp, and the salsa and guacamole combination lends a bright refreshing vegetal sweet earthy flavour. Would order again. Good!

Overall, Mischief is a decent alternative to the more crowded nightlife spots elsewhere. The laid-back, casual, and relaxing atmosphere allows for actual conversations with friends (without overly loud music in the background). With a decent range of bar snacks and drinks, Mischief is especially good for large social gatherings, especially when they screen sporting events.
