Nestled in a quiet corner of Nihonbashihoncho, Chuo, Tokyo, Kanto, Japan, Unagi Kappo Oedo is a traditional kappo-style restaurant originally founded in 1800 by Kichibei Sokaya, opening in its present location in 1946. A well-known dining landmark, Unagi Kappo Oedo continues to uphold their founder's philosophy that “customers are friends, and the restaurant is a small community”. They're also known for their secret sauce marinade, a perpetual stew where eel is immersed in a continuously enhanced sauce.
Ambience at Unagi Kappo Oedo is designed to evoke the historical Edo period, with semi-private booths draped with traditional noren curtains (fabric dividers) that provide a sense of intimacy. The low ceiling, diffused cool white lights, and cushioned wooden furnishings, all contribute to the historical charm, making diners feel as though they have stepped back in time. The atmosphere is calm and refined, no surprise that business professionals flock here especially during lunch.
Service at Unagi Kappo Oedo is professional and polite, with staff being attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring that guests understand the menu (which is available in English and Japanese) and receive recommendations suited to their preferences. However, order fulfilment can be slow during peak hours, particularly when the restaurant is crowded. That said, they maintain the standards and traditional etiquette as befits a kappo-style dining establishment.
Food at Unagi Kappo Oedo is traditional Japanese cuisine, focused on expertly prepared unagi kabayaki / grilled freshwater eel anguilla japonica dishes. Chef applies the Edomae style of preparation, which involves steaming the eel before grilling and immersing it, resulting in an exquisite texture and taste. Portions are large for individuals, incredibly filling. Prices command a premium, being on the high side for the equally high standards, budget about JPY ¥6,530 / SGD $59 per person.

The Beer Yebisu (JPY ¥1,045) is a dortmunder-style lager brewed by Sapporo Breweries in Ebisu, Shibuya, Tokyo, Kanto, Japan. It has a deep golden red hue with a persistent creamy white foam head, and aromas of toasted white bread, grapefruit, corn, and honey. The body is smooth, velvety, and thick, with tastes of biscuit, cereal, barley, and orange zest, carrying grainy fruity sour bitter sweet flavour. Has a prolonged, clean and crisp finish.

The side dish Kimosui / Boiled Eel Liver Soup reflects the culinary principles of minimizing waste and celebrating high-quality ingredients. Rich in vitamins A and B, the clear and clean-tasting soup, garnished with the stomach and liver of the eel, is a harmonious pairing. Enjoyed this more than expected. Highly recommended!

Loved the Unaju / Unagi Kabayaki Jubako / Grilled Freshwater Eel Anguilla Japonica, Over White Rice In Lacquered Box. The eel’s skin is slightly charred, adding a subtle smokiness, while the flesh remains succulent and tender, effortlessly melting in the mouth. The rice beneath absorbs the eel’s juices and tare sauce, creating a cohesive and harmonious blend. I note that the richness and depth of flavour here, is greater than most versions I've tried in Singapore. A deeply satisfying and indulgent dining experience. Highly recommended!
