From 09 June till 03 September 2017, Life Is The Heart Of A Rainbow By Yayoi Kusama is being showcased at the National Gallery Singapore. Artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her iconic use of polka dots, nets, and pumpkins in her artwork, will be exhibiting an extensive collection of over 120 paintings, installations, videos, and sculptures. Guests will journey to a surreal, eccentric world, filled with colour and creativity, where bizarre yet compelling art bridge the chasm between high fashion and popular culture.
Spread across 3 sections, the 1st section examines the history of her art, from the 1950s to the present, and the evolution of her use of polka dots, nets, and pumpkins. Themes of repetition can be seen in the early artworks of Yayoi Kusama, paintings that experiment with the size, colour, and spacing of polka dots, to canvases enveloped in nets / netting, creating a hypnotic pattern of light and shadow loops. Fine examples of this include 'Pumpkin, 1981', and 'Infinity Net'. The highlight here is the endless pumpkin fields in 'The Spirits Of Pumpkins Descended Into The Heavens'.
The 2nd section traces her engagement of the form of the human body in her work, through the use of installations and sculptures. The most famous of these are the infinity rooms, immersive experiences that evoke excitement and wonder. The theme of reflection is present in 'Invisible Life', and in 'A Manhattan Suicide Addict' video. The highlight is the 'Infinity Mirrored Room - Gleaming Lights Of The Souls', which examines the theme of lights and space in an immersive 4D experience.
The 3rd section features ongoing paintings as well as large-scale installations, building on whimsical imagery and visual spectacle. The 'My Eternal Soul' series of paintings has vibrant use of biomorphic shapes in a riot of bright colours, abstract and eye-catching. Highlights here include the psychedelic 'I Want To Love On The Festival Night', the playful 'With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever' polka dot room, and the 'Narcissus Garden' installation.
If you're planning a visit to Life Is The Heart Of A Rainbow By Yayoi Kusama, do note that the admission price is SGD $30 per adult, or SGD $15 for adult Singaporeans, and allocate between 2 - 4 hours for viewing. General photography is allowed, although a few pieces are prohibited. The security here is also very strict about guests not touching the exhibits. The star attractions usually have a short queue, and are timed entry, meaning guests are only allowed a few minutes at most with the exhibits.
