Founded in May 2014 by chef Shayne McCallum, restauranteur Alan Sam, and their friend Long Tran, 8bit is a gourmet burger and hot dog shop with a retro (1980s, 1990s) arcade video game theme. Regularly regarded as among the best burger joints in Melbourne, Australia, 8bit has gained a cult following hungry for serving humongous, unashamedly greasy, delicious burgers and hot dogs.
Ambience at 8bit channels the retro arcade video games vibe of the 1980s and 1990s, with garish pixelated tiles of yellow, white, red, and blue. Warm lights illuminate the long communal benches and high tables, while a single arcade gaming machine loaded with many classic video games draws the eye. A little cooking odour hangs in the air, and sticks to clothing.
Service at 8bit is partial self-service, with ordering and payment at the counter, leading to short queues. However, staff display good product knowledge, able to describe dishes and offer recommendations. Dishes are made to order, resulting in a short wait of about 10 minutes, and staff will serve these to your table. Friendly and casual.
Food at 8bit is focused on American cuisine, specifically, burgers and hot dogs. They've given each dish creative names, inspired by video games, creating instant appeal. Portions are huge for individuals, and dishes are consistently well executed, big on flavour and delicious. Prices are cheaper than other places. Budget about AUD $27 / SGD $26 per person.

The Milkshake Salted Caramel (AUD $8 / SGD $7.60) features a blend of vanilla yoghurt, milk, and salted caramel sauce. It's thinner in texture and more milky than other versions, but I like the bold milky floral salty sweet flavour.

Loved the Beef Chili Cheese Fries (AUD $9 / SGD $8.50) with its beer battered potato fries being thick cut, with a fluffy soft texture and a slight satisfying crisp edge. Generously coated with tender minced beef chili, crisp spring onions, juicy sliced jalapeno peppers, and gooey thick nacho cheese sauce. Burst of robust savoury salty meaty spicy cheesy flavours, can get rather intense. Best paired with a drink. Good!

The 1-Up Mushroom & Beef Burger (AUD $16 / SGD $15.10) is a giant of a burger, featuring a juicy dense patty of crumb battered flat field mushroom, and a juicy tender patty of grilled minced beef, along with 2 fluffy soft burger buns, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, and sharp yellow mustard. You get big meaty savoury salty smoky vegetal earthy sweet flavours here. Aptly named after the red super mushroom power-up from the 'Super Mario Bros.' series of games, even Mario Mario and Luigi Mario will approve of this hearty, delicious burger. Highly recommended!
