Hailing from the Yutenji district in Meguro ward, in Tokyo, Kanto region of Japan, Sumire Yakitori House was established in June 2009. Named for the Japanese phonetic sound for the word 'Smile', because they hope their dining experience brings smiles, Sumire Yakitori House is known for their mid-range, traditional kushiyaki grill dining. They've since grown internationally, operating over 100 stalls across 9 countries, with their Singapore outlet opening in August 2013.
Ambience at Sumire Yakitori House resembles a traditional izakaya, though it's not exactly authentic. Instead of cramped seating around the bar and grill, the place is spacious with ample seats, including private booths. The overhead spotlights and neon signages cast a soft glow over the sturdy, wide, and functionally comfortable wooden furniture, and there's minimal grilling odour in the air. Fairly pleasant.
Service at Sumire Yakitori House is alright for a restaurant. Staff work quickly and efficiently, be it taking or fulfilling orders, clearing and cleaning tables when diners leave, or attending to requests. There isn't much opportunity to showcase product knowledge, and they generally seem hurried. They proactively assist in pouring drinks, but only when it's not crowded. Payment is self-service, over the counter, where staff ask for feedback.
Food at Sumire Yakitori House is distinctly Japanese, with a focus on grilled dishes and skewers. Quality of ingredients is fresh, and the execution is consistently above average. Generally, portions are slightly larger than elsewhere, with thicker cuts or bigger servings for sharing. However, prices are also slightly higher, balancing out the value for money. The full menu is only available at dinner, with lunch being a partial menu. Budget about SGD $45 per person for a meal with drinks here.

The Sake Asabiraki Junmai (SGD $35) is a pure rice sake, brewed by the Asabiraki Brewery in Morioka, Iwate prefecture, Tohoku region of Japan. It has a clear, transparent colour, with tastes and aromas of strawberry, mango, white rice, and mountain water. The body is smooth, soft, and rich, with a delicate fruity sweet grainy flavour, and a semi-dry finish.

The Kyabetsu Shio Dare / Cabbage In Salt & Sesame Oil Sauce (SGD $Complimentary / $2.80 Ala-Carte) was served as a complimentary starter on a particular weekend dinner visit, with any subsequent servings chargeable as per the ala-carte menu. This is a staple izakaya dish. The fresh white cabbage leaves have a firm juicy crunch to texture, while the dressing of sesame oil, shio / salt, and muki goma / white sesame seeds, lend a lovely nutty salty savoury vegetal flavour. Yum. Worth ordering!

Among the better versions of Chawanmushi / Steamed Egg Custard (SGD $3.80) I've had. It has the usual wobbly soft warm egg custard studded with tender ingredients, including shiitake mushrooms, chicken chunks, crab stick, and ginko nuts. Has a delicate eggy sweet taste, with hints of earthy savoury nutty flavours. But what made this stand out is the addition of a little dashi (kombu seaweed) stock, giving it a depth of vegetal earthy taste. Worth ordering!

Good!

I like the Tori Karaage Karai / Spicy Fried Chicken Chunks (SGD $7.80) here. The wheat flour battered boneless chicken chunks are meaty and juicy, with a crisp crunch to the exterior, and a tender succulent chew to the interior. Coated in chili pepper, this has a bold spicy savoury sweet flavour. Nicely appetizing, especially with a splash of lemon juice. Good!

Loved the aptly named Bakudan Korokke / Bomb Croquette (SGD $8.90), which is like a Japanese scotch egg, but with potatoes and carrots instead of meat. Served on a bed of fresh crunchy lettuce and juicy cherry tomatoes, this soft chunky potato croquette has a crisp panko breadcrumb exterior, with a runny poached egg interior stacked with sliced carrots. Cut in, and the 'bomb' egg yolk oozes out, lending the dish good eggy sweet flavour, complementing the starchy potato flavour. Dressed with a tangy sour salty savoury tonkatsu sauce. Delicious, we all enjoyed this. Highly recommended!

The Aburi Salmon Black Pepper Uramaki Roll (SGD $9.90) features crab stick mayonnaise and avocado, rolled in vinegared sushi rice with seaweed, topped with a slice of aburi salmon, garnished with black pepper. Has a soft creamy tender texture, with a delightful vegetal sweet savoury smoky spice flavour. The difference lies in the use of the black pepper, which contrasts beautifully with the smoky aburi salmon, giving it a distinct flavour unlike any sushi I've had. Good!

The Ebi Crunch Uramaki Roll (SGD $9.90) is well-executed, but not memorable. A deep-fried ebi / prawn tempura is rolled with cucumber strips, vinegared sushi rice, and seaweed, topped with tobiko / flying fish roe and tempura batter. The batter lends a contrasting crunch to the soft juicy texture of the sushi roll, but the sweet savoury briny flavours are rather muted in comparison to the other dishes here. Could be improved.

The unique combination of cream cheese, vinegared sushi rice, seaweed, and unagi / grilled fresh water eel marinated with teriyaki tare (light soy sauce, sugar, mirin rice wine), result in a bold cheesy savoury salty sweet flavour. Has a soft juicy chew to texture, and I love the pairing with wasabi. Good!

The Sumire Yakitori Platter 12 Skewers, Salt & Tare Sauce Mix (SGD $29.80) is a platter of skewers for the undecided, and is best shared. It's served with a variety of 6 types of skewers, either marinated in shio / salt, or teriyaki tare (light soy sauce, sugar, mirin rice wine) sauce. Notice they normally choose the less premium skewers for this, but it's still decent value for money.
