Opened since February 2021, Fei Zhu Lok Lok has quickly gained popularity for its Malaysian Johor style lok lok, a type of street food which features meat, vegetables, and seafood on skewers, either served boiled or deep-fried. At Fei Zhu Lok Lok, they have a wide variety of over 30 different types of lok lok skewers, all priced affordably at SGD $1, plus, some consider the young co-founders Phyllis Seah and Goh Jueying to be easy on the eyes.

Ambience at Fei Zhu Lok Lok draws on the coffee shop it occupies in the middle of a light industrial estate in the Tai Seng area of Singapore. The open place has many seats, functionally comfortable and modern, with bright lights overhead. During dinner, only a few stalls are open, most diners are here to visit Fei Zhu Lok Lok, so expect long queues and waiting times of up to 50 minutes, despite the quick turnover.

Service at Fei Zhu Lok Lok is completely self-service. You queue, pick out the skewers you wish, make payment, and collect a number. When your order is ready (it takes between 15 to 30 minutes), you self-collect it over the counter. That said, staff are quick to replenish skewers in the chiller throughout to ensure sufficient variety, and they also perform effective service recovery; replacing the entire batch if they incorrectly prepare it as ordered.

Food at Fei Zhu Lok Lok is focused on Malaysian style lok lok, with a range of meat, vegetables, and seafood on skewers, served with a range of sauces. Choose either boiled in salt water, or deep-fried and seasoned with salt and chili powder; the default is deep-fried. Ingredients are of decent quality, with the main draw being low prices - at SGD $1 per skewer, it's quantity over quality. Most folks get a whole tray-load of skewers, and then share.

There's a choice of 2 preparation methods for your lok lok skewers. By far the most popular, and default option, is deep-fried and seasoned with salt and chili powder, which makes everything so tasty. The more healthy version is boiled in salt water, but most people don't eat lok lok to be healthy... though I think this method is more suitable for the various vegetable skewers.

All orders of lok lok skewers are served with a trio of dipping sauces. There's Sambal Belacan which is straight up savoury salty spicy in taste and is the most fiery. The Thai Sweet Spicy Chili is the most mild with sweet spicy sour flavour. The House Special Garlic Chili is unique, with a strong sweet sour savoury spicy flavour that is my favourite.

With each skewer priced at SGD $1, it's easy to just grab a whole bunch at a go. The ingredients are of decent quality, some are fresh while others are frozen. Premium ingredients have 2 skewers so those are SGD $2 instead. The casual atmosphere here lends well to having a mountain of skewers with drinks, and just chilling through the night.

Of the 23 skewer varieties I tried, my 10 personal favourites include: Bean Skin, Broccoli, Chicken Cheese Balls, Chicken, Fish Balls, Oyster Mushroom, Scallop, Squid Balls, Squid, and Taiwanese Pork Sausage. Would get more of these next time!
