Founded in 1986 in Arlington, Northern Virginia (NOVA), Virginia, United States Of America (U.S.A.), by husband-and-wife team Jerry and Janie Murrell, Five Guys is a casual fast-food diner known for their hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, and American milkshakes, all made-to-order using fresh ingredients, served in large generous portions. Named for their 5 sons (Jim, Matt, Chad, Ben, Tyler), who all joined the family business, Five Guys opened in Singapore in December 2019.

Ambience at Five Guys is styled like the classic American diner. Brightly lit with checked white and red wall tiles, with overhead lampshades in the exact same colours, and simple grey tiled floors. The sturdy wooden furnishings are decently comfortable, and well spread out to occupy the ample floor space. The open kitchen has a large grill here, and you can easily watch them preparing orders.

Service at Five Guys is completely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection of orders over the counter. That said, staff are friendly and knowledgeable, guiding customers through ordering and accurately capturing the various customisation requests. Order fulfillment is fast, though their packing can sometimes be messy and haphazard. You're also expected to clear your own tables if dining-in.

Food at Five Guys is American cuisine, focused specifically on burgers, hotdogs, and milkshakes. The menu is small and focused, instead, the emphasis is on maintaining a consistently high quality. Fresh ingredients (never frozen), grilled to order, so yummy. Portions are huge for individuals. Prices are higher than elsewhere though, budget about SGD $28 per person for a meal here.

Choose to combine up to 11 different flavours for your milkshake. To start, I only got 1 flavour; the Milkshake Vanilla (SGD $10) is thick and creamy rich, with a pleasant floral milky sweet flavour from the vanilla. There's an option for added whipped cream, which I declined. It's filling, but not overly cloying or heavy on the palate. Good!

The Milkshake Strawberry (SGD $10) is delicious, and it has generous chunks of real strawberry fruit within! With a thick creamy rich texture, this milkshake has a bright fruity milky sweet flavour, and doesn't feel heavy or cloying on the palate. Good!

The Milkshake Chocolate (SGD $10) has the requisite thick creamy rich texture, though the milkshake itself only has a medium strength of chocolatey sweet flavour. Not too heavy or cloying on the palate, its lightness seems to adequately function as a base for other milkshare flavours to be mixed in. Worth ordering!

Got a combination blend Milkshake Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter, Malted Milk, Oreo Cookies (SGD $10). The texture is richer and creamier than usual, and it tastes rather similar to a REESE'S Peanut Butter Cups candy, with a salty sweet milky chocolatey nutty flavour, and a lovely crunch from the cookie bits. Good!

The sole side dish on the menu is thick-cut French fries. All fresh, the Netherlands-sourced or Australian-sourced potatoes are washed, peeled, then painstakingly hand-cut each day. The fries are checked twice daily, and sub-standard ones are thrown away. The Fries Five Guys Style (SGD $9) feature these long strips of hand cut potato fries, cooked in 100% peanut oil, and tossed in salt. Has a fluffy soft crisp texture, with addictive salty sweet starchy flavour. The portion is huge and is best shared - after filling your regular or large cup with fries to the brim, an extra portion is then poured into your takeaway bag. Good!

The Cheese Dog (SGD $12) is a messy yet delicious hotdog, done right. The star is the long juicy snappy all-beef, kosher, premium hotdog sausage, split down the middle and grilled. The beef hotdog sausage has a fresh and robust meaty savoury salty flavour. It's sandwiched within 2 fluffy soft hotdog bread buns, which have mild bready sweet flavour, and perform a semi-decent job at holding most of the fillings throughout. There's also a slice of gooey melted American cheese with bright cheesy salty flavour.

There's a choice of up to 15 different garnishes, and you can add as many or as little as you wish. I chose the crisp white onions with sharp vegetal spice sweet flavour, the grainy gherkin relish with bright vegetal sweet flavour, the crunchy dill pickles with sharp vegetal sour flavour, the thick tomato ketchup for its bright vegetal sweet sour flavour, the rich barbecue sauce for its tangy sour savoury sweet flavour, and creamy yellow mustard with sharp sour spice flavour. Loved every bite, and it's fairly light. Highly recommended!

Loved the delicious Double Beef Hot Dog (SGD $14), because the only thing better than 1 hotdog, is 2 hotdogs. A pair of long juicy snappy all-beef, kosher, premium hotdog sausages, split and grilled as a duo. The beef hotdog sausage has a fresh and robust meaty savoury salty flavour. It's sandwiched within 2 fluffy soft hotdog bread buns, which have mild bready sweet flavour. For toppings, I chose the crisp white onions with sharp vegetal spice sweet flavour, the grainy gherkin relish with bright vegetal sweet flavour, the fresh crisp iceburg lettuce with light vegetal sweet flavour, the thick tomato ketchup for its bright vegetal sweet sour flavour, and creamy yellow mustard with sharp sour spice flavour. Completed with a rasher of crispy crunchy applewood-smoked pork bacon, with robust smoky meaty salty savoury flavour. This is rather filling. Good!

The Bacon Cheeseburger (SGD $17) is a huge, greasy monster of a burger. Stacked with 2 hand-formed beef minced meat patties, which are so gentle juicy soft in texture, with bold meaty savoury salty flavour. The beef patties are fresh, made using 100% grain-fed beef in a ratio of 80% lean meat to 20% fat, cooked till well-done yet locking in the meat juices. The sesame seed burger buns are lightly toasted, soft and fluffy with mild bready sweet flavour. The crisp applewood-smoked pork bacon crunches beautifully, with enticing smoky meaty salty savoury flavour. Finally, the melted American cheese is gooey rich with bright cheesy salty flavour.

There's a choice of up to 15 different garnishes, and you can add as many or as little as you wish. I chose the crisp iceburg lettuce with vegetal sweet flavour, the crunchy dill pickles with sharp vegetal sour flavour, the juicy tomatoes with vegetal sweet flavour, the bouncy grilled mushrooms with vegetal earthy savoury flavour, and creamy yellow mustard with sharp sour spice flavour. I understand that each ingredient is strategically stacked to optimise burger assembly and flavour combination / taste. A decadent indulgence. Highly recommended!

The Bacon Burger (SGD $15) is so yummy. Stacked with 2 hand-formed beef minced meat patties, which are so gentle juicy soft in texture, with bold meaty savoury salty flavour. The sesame seed burger buns are lightly toasted, soft and fluffy with mild bready sweet flavour. The crisp applewood-smoked pork bacon crunches beautifully, with enticing smoky meaty salty savoury flavour. For toppings, I chose the fresh crisp iceburg lettuce with light vegetal sweet flavour, the crunchy dill pickles with sharp vegetal sour flavour, the juicy tomatoes with vegetal sweet flavour, the bouncy grilled mushrooms with vegetal earthy savoury flavour, and crunchy jalapeno peppers with sharp sour spicy flavour. Huge in size, requires some effort to bite through cleanly. However, it's also less messy without sauces, and you get more of the natural tastes. Good!
