The Fish And Chips is a Singaporean English dish that consists of boneless fillets of white fish, battered then deep-fried, served with British English potato chips or French fries, sometimes accompanied by at least 1 other side dish. Also known as Battered Fish And Chips, Fish Supper, or Fish 'N' Chips, the Fish And Chips dish is usually priced around SGD $6 to $29 per serving. It's a fairly common dish, popular with children and adults alike, and is usually eaten throughout the day, for breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea, dinner, or supper.


The type of white fish used in Fish And Chips varies widely from stall to stall. For most Singapore hawkers, they use affordable and easily sourced options like sutchi / cream dory fish, basa catfish, barramundi fish, sea bass fish, or tilapia fish. Premium options may use john dory fish, haddock fish, Atlantic cod fish, ling cod fish, Alaskan pollock fish, red snapper fish, monkfish, hake fish, hoki fish, or halibut fish. The white fish is fully deboned and filleted, then coated in the stall's batter, seasoned with salt, and deep-fried. Type of batter also differs depending on the stall, such as a simple flour batter, bread crumb batter, spice batter, beer batter, or even tempura batter.

The resulting cooked fish in Fish And Chips will have a light crisp crunch to the exterior, while the interior remains moist, tender, and flaky, with mild sweet savoury salty flavour. Hot crinkle cut potato chips, fluffy and crisp with starchy salty savoury flavour. Warm soft baked beans in tomato sauce with bright vegetal earthy sweet savoury notes.

Fresh juicy cucumber with vegetal sweet flavour. Nicely toasted bun and smooth butter, with bready sweet buttery salty flavour.

This brand is known for its variety of fish, and their unique range of accompanying dipping sauces.

Choose from a variety of fresh fish, including cream dory, hoki, sea bass, halibut, snow cod, and more. I typically go for halibut, for its lean meaty firm texture and light savoury sweet flavour. The fish is nicely battered, crisp and not overly greasy.

The coleslaw of white cabbage and purple cabbage is lightly crunchy, with refreshing vegetal sweet milky flavour. The medium cut shoestring potato chips are fluffy and light, carrying starchy salty savoury notes.

Besides tartar sauce, the unique dipping sauces include a salted egg yolk sauce, a shrimpy XO sauce, and a nacho cheese sauce.

This gastrobar serves fresh, authentic Australian fare, in a casual setting surrounded by ample greenery.

Their rendition has a medium large fillet of deboned barramundi fish, lean tender flaky with sweet savoury flavour, coated in a crunchy golden beer batter which holds mild grainy salty notes.

A fresh salad (lettuce, carrots, red onions) lend crunch and vegetal sweet flavour, while fluffy thick cut potato chips carry starchy salty savoury flavour.

These days, this casual, family-friendly halal chain is a reliable mid-range dining option.

The cod fish and chips is only available on their specialities menu, which also happens to be in their up-market restaurants that tend to have better quality ingredients and cooking techniques.

The cod fish is delicately light moist flaky, with pleasant sweet savoury flavour. Coated in the house batter, which is thin and crispy, lending salty savoury notes.

The medium cut potato chips are crisp and fluffy, with nice starchy salty savoury flavour. Accompanied with a lemon wedge, tartar sauce, and a yummy garlic butter sauce.

Established in December 2014, this modern casual diner is named for their philosophy - to source fresh gourmet seafood and cook them simply, letting the natural flavours shine.

Their rendition features a large deboned fillet of ling cod fish, coated in a crisp golden crumb batter. Within, the fish is moist and flaky, with lovely sweet savoury flavour.

Accompanied by medium thick and fluffy steak-cut potato chips, with starchy salty savoury flavour. Also juicy crunchy ponzu vinaigrette cucumber topped with almonds, with bright vegetal sour sweet salty earthy nutty flavour.

Served with tartar and chili sauce.

Choose from a range of fresh deboned white fish, including haddock, cream dory, or cod. Coated in a thin crisp batter, the fish within remains moist and flaky, with sweet salty flavour.

The thick cut potato chips are fluffy with a dense bite, and carry starchy savoury notes. The warm mashed mushy peas have lovely vegetal earthy grassy sweet flavour.

I like to add a dash of sea salt and a splash of malt vinegar, for an added salty sour kick.

Also warm toasted buttered bread with smoky buttery bready sweet notes, and soft baked beans in tomato sauce with vegetal sweet savoury earthy flavour.
