Many Landscaped Gardens, Each An Attraction In Itself

.....

The latest Singapore Attraction, the Gardens By The Bay is a much heralded, 'must visit' place. The Gardens By The Bay does live up to its hype, even though it is currently only 70% or so complete. And what a beautiful place it is!

The Gardens By The Bay is at once an engineering, design, landscaping, horticulture and conservation feat. Beautiful landscaped gardens, each showcasing an aspect of culture, nature or conservation, are constructed upon reclaimed land and sustained with green technology. This feat in itself makes the Gardens By The Bay commendable.

Each landscaped garden in the Gardens By The Bay is a mini-attraction on its own. The Heritage Gardens showcase the 4 major cultures of Singapore, and their use of plants in daily life. Each of the 4 themed gardens revolve around each race, with matching architecture, and spotlight plants they consider important.

The World Of Plants in Gardens By The Bay is only partially completed. But those areas that have been completed are intriguing. The ones that were completed during my visit included Understorey, World Of Palms and Secret Life Of Trees. Information and exhibits are presented in relatively novel and different ways.

The Supertree Grove & Corridor in the middle of Gardens By The Bay houses the OCBC Skyway. At a height of just above tree level, you can see the bay area. However, I felt this was rather underwhelming... while the view is nice, you don't exactly get clear views in all directions. At night, the area is beautifully lit, and featues the OCBC Garden Rhapsody at 7.45pm and 8.45pm daily.

The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are the main pay-per-entry areas of Gardens By The Bay. The Flower Dome re-creates a temperate climate, and features gardens themed around geographical regions, like the Australia Garden, South Africa Garden or the South American Garden. The Flower Field located here is easily the prettiest landscaped garden in the entire Gardens By The Bay.

The Gardens By The Bay Cloud Forest re-creates its namesake, the cloud forest, complete with Waterfall, and high walkways. The experience walking along these walkways was simply awesome, with great views of the bay and interior architecture of the Cloud Forest. I felt like I was on a different planet! Well worth the admission price!

If you're planning a visit, do note that general admission is free, including admission to the Bay South Outdoor Gardens. Admission to the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest costs SGD $28, while the OCBC Skyway at the Supertree Grove costs SGD $5. Allocate between 2 to 6 hours for viewing, wear a good pair of shoes, and bring water! It's best to visit during daylight hours, but you may wish to prepare a cap / umbrella / sunblock lotion.

Street Food - Egg Omelette

Were you looking for the newer post about this? It's here! : https://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.com/2022/12/best-of-singapore-hawkers-egg-omelette.html

Also Known As:
Egg Omelette, Torta, Omelet, Stuffed Omelette, Frittata

Average Price Per Serving:
SGD $4 - $15

Description:
Egg Omelette is a traditional breakfast dish from Britain or America, although today it is popular in many Western countries.

Egg Omelette is made with eggs, sliced button mushrooms, sliced strips of ham (pork) / chicken ham / turkey ham, american cheese / cheddar cheese, salt, milk, water, butter and pepper. Some hawkers also add bell peppers or onions.

In Singapore, Egg Omelette isn't available as a street food. The closest Egg Omelette version to a traditional street food are those sold in mid range cafes / bistros. More up-market restaurants may sometimes have Egg Omelette on the menu, these versions typically contain premium ingredients.

A good Egg Omelette should have warm and fluffy eggs, in a semi-gelatinous solid state, rather than hard and crispy. The mushrooms, ham and cheese should be generously spread throughout.

Egg Omelette is typically served accompanied by a salad, traditionally coleslaw or garden salad, and french fries / english chips. Some hawkers may also include a slice of bread, typically garlic bread, or bread and butter.

Egg Omelette is normally served during breakfast or brunch, although some stalls may also sell it as a snack thoughout the day.

.....

Egg Omelette is one of my prefered breakfast foods. Love it!

These are the top 3 stalls which I feel serve the best Egg Omelette in Singapore.

Street Food - Root Beer Float

Also Known As:
Root Beer Float, Root Beer, Soda Float, Soft Drink Float

Average Price Per Serving:
SGD $5 - $12

Description:
Root Beer Float is a popular dessert beverage, originating from America. In Singapore, it was introduced by the now defunct A & W Restaurant, a fast food outlet.

Root Beer Float only comprises 2 ingredients, namely, the soft drink / carbonated drink Root Beer, and vanilla ice cream. The soft drink Root Beer derives its name from the primary ingredient used to make it, which is sassafras root.

Besides sassafras root, other ingredients that go into the making of Root Beer may include wild sarsaparilla, sweet sarsaparilla, honduran sarsaparilla, artificial sassafras root, wintergreen, piper auritum / root beer plant, liquorice root, sweet birch, black birch, black cherry, red spruce, black spruce, sitka spruce, dandelion root, burdock root, yuca root, soapbark, allspice, chocolate, nutmeg, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon, cassia, fennel, clove, tolu balsam, balsam fir, sugar, ginger, star anise, anise, mint, hops, malted barley, st. john's wort, molasses, acacia, honey and yeast.

Traditionall, the exact mix of ingredients that go into the making of a root beer is a closely guarded secret of the various soft drink manufacturers, and isn't publicly available.

In Singapore, Root Beer Float isn't a street food, rather, it is typically sold in mid range cafes / bistros / fast food outlets that are American inspired. As such, there aren't many stalls that sell Root Beer Float, which causes Singaporeans to sometimes seek out this dessert beverage when travelling overseas.

As Root Beer is a mass produced, readily available soft drink, the quality of Root Beer Float is quite consistent. The determining factors for a good Root Beer Float are instead size, serving method, and quality of the vanilla ice cream.

Therefore, a good Root Beer Float should be served in at least a 250 millilitre mug, although a 500 millilitre mug is preferable. The mug should be chilled beforehand, which gives it a frosty appearance, and preserves the coldness of the vanilla ice cream for a longer period of time. The scoop of vanilla ice cream should be generous, with a milky and creamy texture.

Some stalls may choose to substitute root beer for another soft drink, typically a clear fizzy soda, or a fizzy cola. In such cases, the dish is known as a Soft Drink Float instead.

.....

Root Beer Float is a rather uncommon drink in Singapore, normally only sold by cafes that are American inspired.

These are the top 3 stalls which I feel serve the best Root Beer Float in Singapore.

Street Food - Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate

Were you looking for the newer post about this? It's here! : https://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.com/2023/12/best-of-singapore-hawkers-hot-chocolate.html

Also Known As:
Hot Chocolate, Drinking Chocolate, Hot Cocoa

Average Price Per Serving:
SGD $4 - $8

Description:
Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate is a dessert beverage thought to have originated with the ancient Mayans / Aztecs. Today, Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate is an international drink, although the most popular and common Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate versions are American, British, Spanish / Mexican or Italian.

Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate is typically made with melted chocolate / drinking chocolate powder, milk, sugar and water. The type of chocolate used is typically a version of dark chocolate, although variations that use white chocolate or milk chocolate are common as well. The quality of chocolate affects the final Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate; better quality chocolate results in a richer texture, with a deeper, fuller chocolate taste.

The amount of milk used to make Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate should be enough to give a a smooth texture, without overpowering the chocolate. Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate differs from Chocolate Milk and Milo by having less milk / milk powder and sugar, with more chocolate, resulting in a much more concentrated chocolate taste.

In Singapore, Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate isn't a street food, rather, it is typically sold in mid-range cafes / bistros. There are very few stalls that specialize in proper Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate, with many stalls simply using instant / powdered versions. These types of Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate typically have a thin texture, and a weak chocolate taste.

Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate is typically served in a mug, sprinkled with chocolate powder, cinnamon powder, chocolate syrup / sauce, or whipped cream. Other times, stalls may infuse the Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate with additional flavours, including Cinnamon, Vanilla, Ginger, Orange, Mint or Chili. Cold versions of Hot Chocolate are simply known as Iced Chocolate, and the preparation methods remain the same, with the addition of ice.

.....

I personally prefer my Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate to be slightly thick, with a rich chocolate taste. Warm and satisfying, especially on cold days!

These are the top 3 stalls which I feel serve the best Hot Chocolate / Drinking Chocolate in Singapore.

.....

MacRitchie Reservoir Park & HSBC TreeTop Walk is a relatively large area, comprising mostly of the 9 Nature Trails & Tracks (Chemperai, Prunus, Lornie, Jering, Pertaling, Terentang, Jelutong, Sime, Peirce).

Most of the attractions are located at the main MacRitchie Reservoir Park area, around the Pump Station, Amenities Centre and Bandstand. As the Singapore Canoe / Kayak Federation is located here, this area is popular with canoe / kayak athletes, who train here fairly often.

The start of the Broadwalk / Forest Broadwalk is located just beyond the Kayak / Canoe Launching Pontoon and Fishing Ground, next to a Fitness Corner. This Broadwalk / Forest Broadwalk circles the perimeter of MacRitchie Reservoir Park and the central water catchment area, and is therefore quite long.

The Bandstand is located at the older portion of MacRitchie Reservoir Park. With its unique twisting zig zag bridge, the Bandstand is the most iconic structure in MacRitchie Reservoir Park, and is most closely associated with it by Singaporeans. On the nearby hill stands the Lim Bo Seng Tomb, a memorial to Singapore's World War II spy and hero.

On the opposite end of MacRitchie Reservoir Park is the HSBC TreeTop Walk. A free-standing suspension bridge that connects 2 hills in MacRitchie Reservoir Park, the HSBC TreeTop Walk offers a fantastic view of the forest canopy. The HSBC TreeTop Walk is also used for research purposes. From the HSBC TreeTop Walk, the Jelutong Tower is just a short distance away, and also offers a great view of the rainforest.

The shortest route to HSBC TreeTop Walk is from Venus Drive, or from the Singapore Island Country Club. The longest route is from the main MacRitchie Reservoir Park. A round trip, on foot, via the short route takes around 2.5 hours, while the long route takes around 5 hours.

If you're planning a visit, admission is free, though it's best to visit during daylight hours, and before 4.30pm. Allocate between 1 to 6 hours for viewing, depending on which nature trail you follow. Bring plenty of water, and wear a good pair of shoes. If you bring food, keep it sealed in bags, as the resident wildlife, especially monkeys, may be attracted by it.
