Degreed is a free online lifelong learning platform service which allows users to discover, curate, share, track, learn, and recognise learning, from any online or off-line source. Founded in March 2012 on the philosophy that there is no single path to expertise, Degreed is on a mission to ‘Jailbreak the Degree’. Their micro-learning platform service can track, discover, and recognize all forms of learning, including and not limited to: face-to-face instructor-led courses, e-learning or online courses, articles, blogs, videos, podcasts, work experiences, evidence of skills, and learning events.

Degreed Interface
Degreed Interface

The beauty of Degreed lies in its user-friendly, intuitive interface. From the multitude of topics / subject matters available, select the pathways you're interested in, and you'll be presented with a curated series of content. Each pathway is structured and well-organised, and the curated content may include e-learning or online courses, articles, blogs, videos, or podcasts. By using a micro-learning approach, the learner is able to learn at their own pace, anytime, anywhere.

All content loads within the Degreed interface, which in effect, 'pulls' the external content and presents it within the screen. In fact, other external links can load within the interface as well, and you can include these additional learning content in your profile. Once you've completed a piece of learning content, you're able to 'Mark Complete', which prompts for your learning takeaway. Another highlight is the ability to submit prior work, face-to-face instructor-led courses, work experiences, evidence of skills, learning events, or evidence of learning (achievements, certificates, degrees) in your profile. If you choose to have it validated by subject matter experts, you'll be issued a recognised certification.

Curated Learning Pathways
Curated Learning Pathways

There are few downsides to using Degreed. Primarily, the main issue is related to their aggregation of external content for learning - if the original owner / author takes down the learning content, that breaks the link in the application as well. Fortunately, this rarely happens. Another point is related to their free individual account, which mainly allows access to free learning content. This means that paid content from learning providers is usually not accessible.

Degreed is effectively 3 services in 1 platform. First, they offer the ability for tracking, measuring, and sharing knowledge and skills acquired outside formal education. Second, they have a learning ecosystem that aggregates and curates relevant learning materials from across the internet. Third, for a fee, Degreed For Business operates as an enterprise learning portal that integrates with existing learning management systems (LMS) and proprietary content, providing organisations a holistic view of employee learning. Overall, I'm happy with my experience using Degreed thus far.
