Established in January 2020, Baker's Bench Bakery, besides having a tongue-twisting mouthful of a name, is known for their small-batch artisanal breads and pastries, made fresh in small quantities daily. Styled as a bakery cafe, and designed like a cozy home kitchen, Baker's Bench Bakery is named after the key piece of equipment in a bakery, on which the master baker creates his / her wares.

Ambience at Baker's Bench Bakery has a warm, welcoming, modern Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic. Simple shades of white, blue, and grey, along with bright natural lights and sturdy wooden furnishings, lend a homely feel. The display counter has rows of appetizing bakes, drawing the eye. I understand they recently improved on sound-proofing, reducing the amount of echo in the space.

Service at Baker's Bench Bakery is partial self-service, with ordering and payment over the counter, though staff will serve orders to your table. Staff display good product knowledge on the menu, and can briefly describe the ingredients in their breads and pastries. I note they clean up quickly when diners leave. However, their menus tends to be all over the place, with 3 or so scattered around, making it difficult to reference at a glance.

Food at Baker's Bench Bakery is all about European style breads and pastries, with influences from British, German, French, and Polish cuisines. The emphasis is on small-batch quality, made fresh daily. The evidence is in the taste, texture, and aroma; with standouts being their sourdough bread / sandwiches, croissants, scones, buns, and bagels. Portions are sized for individuals. Prices are reasonable for a cafe, budget about SGD $18 per person.

Fairly decent Flat White (SGD $5), with a fragrant roasted coffee beans aroma and a good strength to the body.

Pretty good Long Black (SGD $4.50), with a smooth toasty coffee beans aroma, and a decent acidity that isn't overpowering.

The Kombucha Lemon & Mint (SGD $5.50) was incredibly punchy, with a robust tangy zesty sour sweet herbal flavour. Possibly a little too strongly sour, this was face-curdling with every sip.

The Biscuit (SGD $4) has a smooth firm exterior and a crumbly moist interior, and seems to have been infused with herbs and seasoned with salt. This gives it a grainy bready savoury salty herbal flavour, with the savoury notes being more pronounced. Tasty enough on its own, though better if paired with spreads or jam.

The Raisin & Cinnamon Bagel (SGD $4 per piece) was enjoyable. I like the slightly crisp, firm exterior, that gives way to a slightly spongy, moist interior. The bagel is studded with raisins and infused with cinnamon, giving each bite a fruity bready sweet sour spice flavour. Balanced enough that no single taste overwhelms the others, this was delicious. Good!

The first Build Your Plate (SGD $16) we got. The large sourdough bread slices are crisp and pourous, crunching satisfiyingly when bit, and have a mild sour bready flavour. The roasted button mushrooms are tender and juicy, with robust smoky vegetal earthy savoury flavour. The ripe avocado slices are creamy and smooth, with bright vegetal sweet grassy flavour. The pork and fennel sausage is preservative-free, all-natural, and full-flavoured, with a tender juicy snappy texture, and bold meaty savoury salty herbal flavour. Very filling even though we shared this.

The second Build Your Plate (SGD $17) we got. The large croissant bread is flaky and crisp outside, soft and spongy inside, with a buttery sweet flavour. The grilled vegetables (zucchini, bell peppers / capsicum, white onions) are crunchy and juicy, with robust smoky vegetal bitter sweet flavour. The 2 sunny side up eggs are silky smooth, with bright eggy sweet flavour and semi-runny yolks. The pork back bacon is preservative-free, and all-natural, with a light juicy chew to texture, and deep meaty savoury salty flavour. Very satisfying to start the day.

The Glazed Bacon Sourdough Sandwich (SGD $14) is a large sandwich, served with crisp meslun salad (wild rocket leaves / arugula, mizuna, baby spinach, chard), juicy cherry tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomatoes on the side, all combining in vegetal earthy bitter sweet flavour. The large sourdough bread slices are crisp and pourous, crunching satisfiyingly when bit, and have a mild sour bready flavour. Coated in a blend of dijon mustard and mayonnaise (aptly named 'dijonnaise'), the creamy sauce lends a sharp tangy milky sour sweet flavour. The thick tender slices of pork back bacon are coated in caramelised coffee glaze, resulting in a bold toasty smoky sweet savoury salty flavour in each bite. Best shared. Highly recommended!

The Vegan Banana Bread (SGD $5) is large with a crumbly texture, and holds lovely fruity sweet nutty flavour. The vegan banana bread is studded with a crunchy mix of walnuts, macadamia nuts, and pecan nuts. Fragrant and light, though I wish it were a little more sweet on the palate.

The Sticky Bun (SGD $5) here is like a cinnamon roll, except bigger and more bready in texture. Slightly firm on the top due to the caramelised cinnamon sugar crust, but soft and moist below, this dessert bun has bright floral bready sweet spice flavour. The surface of the bread is studded with crunchy caramelised walnuts and hazelnuts, which lend a nutty sweet flavour. Served in a large portion size that is best shared. Highly recommended!

The Cherry Chocolate Cake (SGD $5) looks foreboding. But cut in, and the crumbly pillow-soft dessert cake gives way easily, with each moist bite releasing a beautiful fruity sweet chocolatey flavour onto the palate. Addictive and yummy. Highly recommended!
