Located about 30 - 40 minutes drive from Surabaya Juanda International airport, Shangri-La Hotel in Indonesia represents the ultimate in luxury 5-star indulgence. Offering a multitude of dining and pampering options set amidst a lush, green environment coupled with touches of luxury, and close to up-market shopping areas, the Shangri-La Hotel in Surabaya is notch above the competition.


Ambience
Ambience within Shangri-La Hotel is distinctly Indonesian, with wooden themed decor paired with artwork of local life in Surabaya. High ceilings with glass panelling, plush carpets and furniture, and touches of golden plating lend an air of elegance and sophistication, while the natural greenery surrounding the place bring a sense of calm. A cast of rotating pianists in the lobby playing classical music lends a soothing touch, and even more commendable is Shangri-La Hotel hiring 1 pianist who is blind.


Room
I stayed in the Deluxe Room at Shangri-La Hotel. The room is comfortable, with many modern amenities. Small touches like a range of toiletries and pillow options are great. Television offers several cable options, and the in-room wi-fi / internet connection is stable and pretty fast, just like the connection throughout Shangri-La Hotel. Work desk is sufficiently large and also suitable for dining, but the wardrobe is slightly small, and there isn't any clothing drawers. Rooms are also positioned such that you get either a pool view, or the city view.


Food
Food at Shangri-La Hotel Jamoo restaurant is below average. I like the range of options in the International buffet, which include American, Japanese, Indonesian, Italian, Chinese, and English. However, most of the dishes are sub-par, lacking in taste, and sometimes freshness. If you must dine at Shangri-La Hotel, opt instead for the other restaurants they have, most of which specialise in 1 type of cuisine, such as Italian, Chinese, or Japanese. If you must have Indonesian food, I suggest eating elsewhere nearby.


Service
Service at Shangri-La Hotel is among the best I've experienced. Staff are welcoming, accomodating to requests, helpful, and efficient. I can trust the concierge to help me purchase items, or take deliveries. During our conference, staff ably assisted setting up, and cleaning, as well as ensuring small details like decorating our tables. Little touches such as greetings, leaving cute hand written notes in my room, or advising on the local Surabaya scene was just delightful. Excellent service, and the main reason I would visit again!


Facilities & Activities
The facilities at Shangri-La Hotel are numerous, ranging from sports and recreational, to beauty treatments, to business facilities. While this is enough reason to never leave the premises during your stay, Shangri-La Hotel is also convienently located just 10 minutes walk from Ciputra World mall, and up-market mall which also has a good range of dining options, including local Indonesia and Surabaya cuisine. Several prominent shops for local Surabaya specialities are also located nearby, though the city centre is 30 - 40 minutes drive away.
