Opening its doors along with the rest of the Japanese food street in Wisma Atria mall in February 2017, Osaka Kitchen Teppanyaki offers diners an authentic teppanyaki experience, using fresh ingredients sourced from Japan. Osaka Kitchen Teppanyaki is known for their popular signature Osaka dishes, including okonomiyaki and yakisoba. Testament to their popularity, the dinner queue even stretches past 9pm on weekends, with an average queue duration of 30 minutes!
Ambience at Osaka Kitchen Teppanyaki is cozy. The spotlit 30-seater restaurant features sturdy modern furnishings, but the highlight is the large, open teppanyaki grill, where chefs prepare dishes right in front of diners. This makes the entire experience a partly theatrical performance. I like that the ventilation is sufficiently strong, there is only a little smell of cooking in the air. Wish there was more seating though.
Service at Osaka Kitchen Teppanyaki rivals that of restaurants, was very pleased. Staff are friendly, proactive, and courteous, politely attending to guests, and making sure you're comfortable. The chefs interact with you if you're seated at the bar counter in front of the open teppanyaki grill, lending a personalised feel to the experience. Staff display good product knowledge on dishes, and are quick and efficient at clearing empty / dirty plates and tables. They acceded to special dietary requests we made, and I like the provision of wet towels too. Memorable!
Food at Osaka Kitchen Teppanyaki is Japanese style teppanyaki, which features food cooked on an iron griddle in front of diners. The chef's skills are evident, dishes are well executed and tasty. Portions are large, and I appreciate the chefs portioning them for us proactively. However, prices are high, befitting the high quality of ingredients and the excellent execution. Budget about SGD $55 per person for an ala-carte meal here, or about SGD $90 per person for the omakase set meal.

They offer some unique teppanyaki items here. For example, I've never seen a teppanyaki grilled camembert cheese before! The teppanyaki grilled bacon & egg is also special, and lovely to watch.

The Beer Kirin Ichibanboshi (SGD $10) is an American style pale lager, brewed by the Kirin Company in Tokyo, in the Kanto region of Japan. It has a clear, straw golden colour, with aromas of malt, grains, skunk, and lemon. The body is light, crisp, smooth, with lively carbonation, and tastes of bread, metal, grass, and cereal. Has a slight sweetness and slight bitterness. Very drinkable but light, and refreshing.

Couldn't identify the varietal of the Sake House Pour (SGD $15), but it's mild in strength, with a refreshing but off-dry texture.

The Whisky Yamazaki (SGD $15) is a Japanese whisky, with a thick full complex body with a oily and classy note, tastes of maraschino cherries, wood resin, grapes, and chocolate, with hints of sherry and vanilla, and an earthy oak and moss aroma. The finish is long and robust, with a lingering pomegranate and nutmeg note. Wish they were slightly more generous with the portion though.

The Garlic Shiso Fried Rice (SGD $18, pictured half portion) was absolutely yummy! And I love that chef proactively portioned this out for us. On a special request, we got this without butter and egg, but it still carries that smoky fragrant aroma, with a lovely savoury spice flavour from the garlic. Not overwhelming, it teases the palate enough to make it compelling and addictive. Good!

I like that the Spinach Teppanyaki (SGD $12) is still fresh and crunchy in texture. The grilled stalks are still slightly juicy, with a light sweet vegetal flavour. Served with a side of Table Salt for dipping, which really brings out the earthy notes. Worth ordering!

Love the smoky earthy sweet savoury flavours of the Buttered Sauteed Mix Mushrooms (SGD $14), which features a trio of mushrooms (shimeji, oyster, king trumpet). Each slice is tender with a slight chew, and the sprinkle of lemon juice lends a sharp citrus bite. Nice.

The Buttered Sweet Potato (SGD $11) has a nice smoky flavour, with a soft texture that yields easily when bit. Bold sweet savoury flavour, Chef advises pairing it with ponzu sauce for more flavour. Personally, I find the Japanese sweet potato tasty enough on its own. I like that they've sliced it large, and kept the skin on, which helps hold the shape beautifully.

"This is for you!", exclaimed chef as he expertly grilled the Pork Loin Steak (SGD $18) in front of us. Nice medium thickness, good ratio of lean meat to fat, tender and succulent texture, light savoury sweet flavour. What's not to like?

The Chicken Teppanyaki With Chili (SGD $16) is good value for money, with 2 medium sized chicken fillets. Perfectly grilled, the chicken skin is crisp, crunching softly in the mouth. The chicken meat is moist and tender with some chew, having a light smoky savoury sweet flavour. Very little fat here. It's served over a bed of vegetables, along with garlic chips and a tame chili powder. Good!

The Squid Teppanyaki (SGD $18) has lightly grilled, fresh squid, sprinkled with seasame seeds and plated over a bed of pea shoots. The squid has an almost crunchy texture, yielding easily, with a light sweet savoury smoky flavour. Good!

The Omakase Set Meal A (SGD $90) features a line-up of 10 dishes, each showcasing the skills of the chef. It includes both modern and traditional plates, as well as the different cooking techniques from steaming to sauteing to grilling. This was a very filling meal, well worth splurging for special occasions.
The Omakase Set Meal A begins with 2 cold appetizers. The Potato & Egg Salad is chunky grainy in texture, with creamy sweet savoury eggy peppery flavours. The firm crunchy texture of the Spicy Chilled Cucumber hides a vegetal sweet spicy kick, and its juicy burst of flavour is refreshing.

Next in Omakase Set Meal A are 4 hot appetizers. The Beef Tendon With Cabbage is boldly savoury salty meaty, the steamed then sauteed beef tendon having a nice soft chew, while the sauteed cabbage is crunchy and fresh. Slight kick of spice here, as it's sprinkled with paprika.

The Grilled Avocado With Melted Mozzarella Cheese is a unique modern appetizer that works well. The soft, creamy, vegetal sweet avocado, coated in rich, salty savoury gooey mozzarella cheese, is completely delicious. It works because the cheese lends much needed flavour to the one-note avocado, and the combination of textures is nice.

Loved the Pork Belly Bacon Omelette! The eggy soft creamy texture, and sweet savoury salty flavours here are so pleasing. The pork belly bacon strips are finely chopped, wrapped in a fluffy egg omelette, coated in mayonnaise, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and spring onions. Loved every bite of this.

The unqiue Seared Speciality Sesame Tofu Beancurd looks and feels like a slab of creamy pork fat, with a wobbly soft, sticky gelatinous texture, so delightful. Yet the earthy nutty sweet savoury notes are distinctly of sesame seeds, very tasty. Brilliant idea to pair it with wasabi, which lends a sharp spicy kick that helps alleviate the texture.

The 1st main course of Omakase Set Meal A is the seafood based Shrimp & Scallop Set A. Served on a bed of tender crunchy smoky sweet Pea Shoots Teppanyaki, along with a wedge of lemon, which chef instructs to drizzle over the seafood. The Grilled Scallop With Butter has fresh, bouncy, sweet smoky scallops, garnished with sesame seeds which lend a nice crunch for contrast. The Shrimp Teppanyaki has a large tiger prawn, partially deshelled but clean, with a sweet savoury smoky flavour, and a tender yet meaty bite to it.

The 2nd main course of Omakase Set Meal A is the meat based Ohmi Wagyu Beef Diced Steak Set A. Served on a bed of fresh crunchy sweet vegetal Spinach Teppanyaki, along with sharp spicy wasabi and crunchy fragrant garlic chips. The Ohmi Wagyu Beef Diced Steak is done to your liking (I got it medium rare, which turned out a beautiful pink), and it has a bold savoury salty meaty flavour, with a nice tender bite. The marbling is beautiful, and you get the distinct fatty oily texture here too.

The Pork Belly Bacon Okonomiyaki is the part of Omakase Set Meal A that really fills you up. This small but hearty pancake features an all-purpose flour batter, thickened with Japanese yam, dashi / seaweed stock, eggs, and shredded cabbage. Garnished with spring onions, pork belly bacon, and katsuobushi (bonito flakes). Notes of savoury salty sweet, with a crisp chewy soft texture.

Loved the Baked Japanese Cheesecake, with its airy, moist, creamy soft texture. Good sweet cheesy flavour too, and the side of fluffy whipped cream is delicate and light. A good dessert cake, and a delicate finish to Omakase Set Meal A.

The Special Okonomiyaki (SGD $22) is a house signature okonomiyaki. The huge, filling pancake features an all-purpose flour batter, thickened with Japanese yam, dashi / seaweed stock, eggs, and shredded cabbage. Garnished with spring onions, beef tendon chunks, squid, prawns / shrimp, and katsuobushi (bonito flakes). Having a bold savoury salty sweet flavour, the okonomiyaki was helpfully portioned by chef for us to share. Loved each bite of this pancake, the beef is incredibly tender, and the seafood within is fresh. Highly recommended!
