Founded in August 2012, Maki-San is a halal certified store that specialises in maki sushi rolls. The appeal of Maki-San lies in their DIY (do-it-yourself) concept, where you choose from a range of over 50 ingredients to customise your maki sushi roll to your fancy. That said, you don't actually get to roll it yourself, instead, after choosing the ingredients, staff will assist to prepare it for you.

Ambience at Maki-San is casual and simple. Bright vibrant colours of green, wood, white, grey, and pink adorn the walls, while the mostly small area is neatly lined with simple furnishings. Concept of a quick eat-and-go style, so turnover here is fast. I find the place isn't as brightly lit as I'd like. Part of the appeal is watching staff prepare your order through the clear glass display!

Service at Maki-San is completely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection of orders over the counter. I notice staff are efficient at clearing away empty / dirty tables when diners leave. I must also commend their proactiveness, when the place isn't busy, staff sometimes serve orders to your table. However, because everything has to be made to order, prepare to wait up to 15 minutes for your order during peak periods.

Food at Maki-San is all about Japanese maki sushi rolls, with over 50 different ingredients to customise your order. They do offer some creative ready-made suggestions for the undecided. Ingredients are fresh and tasty, and so far, I've been quite pleased with the experience. Portions are large, but sized for individuals. Prices are slightly higher than elsewhere though, budget about SGD $13 per person for a meal here.

A standard Green Tea (SGD $1.50) canned drink, which comes as part of a set meal too.

The Tempura Enoki Golden Mushroom (SGD $3.90) is a greasy, decadent bag of deep-fried enoki golden mushrooms, served with a choice of sauce - I got the Salted Egg-straordinaire sauce, which I felt was very weak in flavour. The mushrooms are stringy and chewy, and pretty filling, but light on taste. Overall, an underwhelming snack.

Felt the Tempura Kani Crab Stick (SGD $3.90) was decent, as the texture wavers between crisp and soft, achieving an uninspired middle ground. Neither terrible nor outstanding, it's basically little more than stomach filler. I got the Smoky Cheddar Cheese sauce with this, which is nicely cheesy salty spicy in flavour.

Customised the Una Agi San (SGD $10.40), with egg crepe wrap, Japanese white rice, edamame beans, sweet corn kernels, takuan / yellow daikon radish, tamagoyaki / egg omelette, sliced cheddar cheese, seaweed nori strips, teriyaki sauce, and grilled unagi / eel. Flavours of smoky sweet eggy earthy, with textures of chewy, firm, crunchy, soft, tender, juicy. Very nice, though this wrap is really loose, and the ingredients kept falling out.

Customised the Surfing Turfing San (SGD $9.90), with nori seaweed wrap, Japanese white rice, avocado, hard boiled egg, shredded cucumber, kani crab stick meat, eibko / prawn roe, wasabi furikake, wasabi mayonnaise sauce, and roast beef, though they seem to have forgotten to include my order of steamed ebi / prawn / shrimp.
