Been more than 4 years since I last visited King's Laksa Steamboat, and I'm glad to say their signature dishes are now even better than before. As their name suggests, King's Laksa Steamboat specialises in a unique Singaporean steamboat soup base - laksa, and they remain a casual, affordable option for steamboat if you're in the Upper Serangoon / Kovan / Paya Lebar area.

Ambience at King's Laksa Steamboat is among their highlights. While the modern, functional furniture is relatively comfortable, and the bright spot lights create an interplay of light and shadow against the mostly black and white hues of the place, the strong point here is actually their ventilation. Unlike other steamboat places, you don't have a strong cooking odour in the air, so you leave feeling comfortable.

Service at King's Laksa Steamboat remains friendly and efficient. Staff offer greetings and will quickly seat guests. They display sufficient product knowledge on the menu to suggest recommendations, and quickly fulfill orders or requests. I do wish they would come around more frequently to clear away empty / finished plates though. Also, payment is self-service, over the counter.

Food at King's Laksa Steamboat is pure steamboat; no grilling here. The variety is good, with over 30 different ingredients as part of their buffet, and a choice of 2 out of 6 different types of soup base. The signature, of course, is their laksa broth. The ingredients are of good quality too, seafood and vegetables are fresh. Portions are naturally unlimited, though wastage is discouraged. Prices are reasonable and affordable, budget about SGD $27 per person for a meal here.

We choose the Steamboat Soup Base - Laksa & Chicken Broth. The laksa broth is the highlight, rich from the generous amount of dried shrimp and spices within, creamy in texture with a sharp spicy savoury flavour. The chicken broth is nicely herbal sweet savoury in flavour. Both are very drinkable, and should be drunk to open the appetite, before any ingredients are put in.

I like to create my own dipping sauce of Sesame Sauce, Chili, Spring Onions, Sesame Oil, to pair with any of the ingredients.

Freshly prepared to order, there were a couple of cooked dishes which stood out for us. The Fried Thai Style Tofu Beancurd has a satisfiying light crunch to the exterior, yet the interior is spongy soft and moist, with good savoury spicy flavour from the chili sauce. The signature Prawn Paste Chicken Wings were a highlight, so good we went for another round. Crisp savoury salty skin, moist sweet savoury juicy chicken meat within, super shiok. Highly recommended!

Good range of fresh vegetables and sides for the steamboat. I particularly enjoyed the variety of beech mushrooms, a nice variation instead of the usual shiitake mushroom all the time. Also, they have Pig's Skin, a relatively uncommon ingredient for steamboat. Nicely spongy crunchy in texture.

The seafood we had during out visit was fresh. The stand out item for me was the Flower Crab, having a meaty flaky texture, with a good sweet savoury flavour that holds up well. This is best cooked in lighter broths though.

The range of meats here are decent, though they mostly offer fairly lean cuts. Was surprised by the Mutton Loin, it was less gamey than expected, which I think will appeal to most. The Chicken Fillet is mostly breast meat cuts, and is thick and filling. The Beef Sirloin is cut sukiyaki / shabu shabu style, which allows for quick cooking, and pairs well with egg.

Several options for desserts, though the crowd favourite is the Mango Pudding. But those seeking a healthier alternative can try the Home Made Organic Soy Beancurd (Sugar-Free) instead. And we also had fun eating the Ice Cream by stuffing it into the Golden Fried Mantou Buns.

I've returned several times since my original visit to King's Laksa Steamboat, and I'll also be returning after this visit. Being less crowded than other steamboat places, yet offering decent ambience, service, and food, all at affordable prices, King's Laksa Steamboat remains a strong stalwart in the steamboat scene.
