Since BurgerUP was founded in December 2014, I've visited their outlets several times over the years. With the introduction of BurgerUP Express in January 2018, they're making their foray into a new concept - introducing quick yet gourmet sliders that are hand made and affordable.
BurgerUP Express Facade |
BurgerUP Express Counter |
Ambience at BurgerUP Express is casual and comfortable, the bright and open space feels welcoming. It's hard to miss this place, seeing as it's centrally located in the basement and sees high foot traffic. However, seating is limited, the place barely sits more than 20 people. Most customers order takeaway. Even better, BurgerUP Express is halal-certified!
Service at BurgerUP Express is completely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection of orders over the counter. That said, staff are friendly and engaging, and will helpfully offer suggestions, displaying good product knowledge. If he's around, BurgerUP Express Executive Chef Alvin Poon acts as the affable host, chatting with regulars (they have many regulars), and asking diners for feedback.
Food at BurgerUP Express is distinctly American style cuisine, but unlike their other outlets, the focus here is solely on gourmet sliders. The burger buns are baked by a vendor according to a house recipe, while the burger patties are hand made daily at a central kitchen. Portions are nicely sized for individuals. Prices are very affordable and value-for-money, and they attract all manner of customers, from students to business people to elderly. Budget about SGD $10 per person for a meal here.

The emphasis on serving good quality food is evident in the Battered Button Mushrooms (SGD $1.80). These surprised me by being incredibly juicy, when skewered, the earthy savoury button mushroom juices just burst out. The batter is crisp and crunchy, with a lovely golden hue, while the button mushroom meat is tender and soft. Excellent!

The Fish Bites (SGD $1.80) feature fresh fillets of john dory fish, coated in a crisp and crunchy golden crumb batter. Tender within, with a light chew, and delicate sweet savoury notes. Once you have one of these, you'll never look at fish bites the same way again.

The Fish Slider (SGD $4.80) has 65g of fresh john dory fish fillet, battered in a crisp golden crust, with tender and flaky smooth fish meat that has a delicate sweet savoury flavour. Sandwiched between white burger buns studded with sesame seeds, which are fluffy soft with a light chew, along with creamy mayonnaise, juicy fresh sliced tomato, crunchy vegetal sweet coral green lettuce, tangy sour tartar sauce, and gooey savoury salty melted cheddar cheese. An above average rendition of a fish burger / slider.

The Chicken Slider (SGD $4.80) has 65g of hand formed minced chicken patty, juicy and moist and tender, with a light savoury sweet flavour. Folded within is a slice of gooey salty savoury emmental cheese. Sandwiched between white burger buns studded with sesame seeds, which are fluffy soft with a light chew, along with creamy mayonnaise, juicy fresh sliced tomato, crunchy vegetal sweet coral green lettuce, tangy sweet barbecue sauce, and gooey savoury salty melted cheddar cheese, with an additional slice of crispy emmental cheese on top. Bold burst of flavours, so satisfiying. This was my favourite burger / slider. Highly recommended!

The Beef Slider (SGD $5.50) has 65g of hand formed minced beef patty, juicy and moist and tender, with a bold savoury sweet flavour. Sandwiched between black charcoal burger buns studded with sesame seeds, which are fluffy soft with a light chew, along with creamy mayonnaise, juicy fresh sliced tomato, crunchy vegetal sweet coral green lettuce, tangy sweet barbecue sauce, and gooey savoury salty melted cheddar cheese, with an additional slice of crispy emmental cheese on top. Robust meaty flavours and textures, a true original cheese burger / slider. Good!

The Lamb Slider (SGD $5.50) has 65g of hand formed minced lamb patty, juicy and moist and tender, yet lacking in gamey flavour, instead having a light savoury salty taste. Folded within is a slice of gooey salty savoury emmental cheese. The most surprising offering, will appeal to those who usually don't like the gamey taste of lamb.
