From its establishment in 1981 in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia, Marrybrown has since grown internationally, becoming one of the largest halal certified Malaysian fast food brands worldwide, operating over 400 outlets across 20 countries. Founded by couple Dato Lawrence Liew and Datin Nancy Liew, the Marrybrown concept was based on introducing Malaysian flavours into Western dishes. Marrybrown originally opened in Singapore in 1990, then exited several years later, before re-entering the Singapore market again in October 2015.

Ambience at Marrybrown is casual functional, and rather tacky, though I commend the effort. The bright, spot lit place is lined with wide communal tables, and private wooden cushioned booths, while a small area is decorated with faux greenery and wooden swing chairs. However, the primary colour theme of red and white is fairly loud, clashing with the decor. It's also unusually dark in some areas due to insufficient lighting. Oddly, they don't believe in having plastic straws, yet freely serve plastic cup covers and multiple plastic utensils; it'll be more environmentally friendly if this was reversed.

Service at Marrybrown is relaxed, to put it mildly. Supposed to be quick service fast food, but average waiting times during non-peak periods range from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Even the delivery companies end up waiting for some time. The problem is not that they cook in small batches, but rather, they only begin cooking when the current batch runs out. Some forward planning and preparation work would help reduce the waiting time. Cleaning up is also performed languidly, but with the amount of waiting customers are doing, this seems to fit.

Food at Marrybrown is Malaysian style Western food, with several popular Malaysian dishes. The star here is their Asian-spiced fried chicken, which is delicious; everything else on the menu plays secondary bit parts. Marrybrown was one of the earliest restaurants to introduce rice-based and noodle-based fast food, but although their slogan is "Something Different", I'm not sure how often they experiment with new items. Portions are sized for individuals, and prices are similar to most other fast food places. Budget about SGD $8 per person for a meal here.

The Marrybrown Lucky Plate Set (SGD $7.95) with a choice of Soft Drink from the dispenser fountain. I chose the Soft Drink A&W Cherry Vanilla, which frankly, has an artificial medicinal herbal flavour, not great. Of the components, I was disappointed with the dry Bun, and the bland Mashed Potato with overly salty brown gravy. The unique Coleslaw Hawaiian was nice, with its crunchy texture and fruity sweet flavour from the pineapple chunks within. The star is the 2 pieces of piping hot Fried Chicken, the chicken meat being tender and juicy, with good sweet savoury flavour; while the crispy spiced chicken skin had an addictive salty spice flavour. I'll skip the side dishes next time, and just go for the chicken.

The Nasi Lemak Marrybrown (SGD $7.50) features the same excellent Fried Chicken, accompanied by fuffly coconut milk infused white rice, with a delicate grainy sweet flavour, except less fragrant and less oily than elsewhere. The crunchy bits of roasted peanuts and salted anchovies / ikan bilis was decent, while the achar / Peranakan spicy pickled salad (pickled cucumber, carrot, pineapple, cabbage) was nicely crunchy and juicy in texture, with bold sharp sour sweet flavour. The crisp lentil crackers pair well with the sambal belacan, which is actually pretty good, with a decent spicy fiery kick. Overall, this is a decent rendition of Nasi Lemak, comparable to most hawker stalls, and I wouldn't mind having it again. Good!

Tried the Tower Burger Combo Set (SGD $8.95) with a choice of Soft Drink from the dispenser fountain. I chose the Soft Drink Fanta Lychee, which has a fizzy sticky body with artificial fruity sweet flavour. The Fries were slightly bland and limp. The Tower Burger has factory produced burger buns and mayonnaise dressed lettuce, both of which were underwhelming. The 2 large patties within were decent though; the first a crisp battered chicken thigh that was juicy and meaty sweet savoury; the second a tender minced chicken patty that was bouncy moist with good salty savoury flavour. Ate both on its own, pretty decent.

The Churros Ondeh-Ondeh (SGD $4.50) features firm outside soft inside pandan / screwpine leaf infused, fried dough sticks, coated in grainy dessicated coconut, paired with a rich sticky gula melaka / palm sugar dipping sauce. Has a light fluffy crunch to texture, and the combination of earthy sweet floral flavours is nice. I rather enjoyed this, the quality is slightly better than the pasar malam / night market bazaar versions. An order gets you 3 sticks. Worth ordering!
