Launched in December 2013 and officially established in February 2014 by founders Yong Yi Sung, Ernest Sim, Rifeng Gao, and Isaac Tan, Grain Catering is a Singaporean food tech startup that promises fuss-free catering, with meals that are healthy, hearty, halal certified, and with good variety. Since I first discovered Grain Catering in August 2018, we've become regular customers, as I find the quality of their food to be consistently better executed than any of their competitors, while still maintaining affordable prices.

The tagline for Grain Catering is "Your Friends Are Eating Grain And Loving It", and this is an apt description. At the time of this post, I consider Grain Catering to be the gold standard for catering in Singapore. Why? There are a variety of factors that support my decision.

First, they're halal-certified, with a wide variety of dishes from many international cuisines, including Singaporean, Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, American, British, French, Italian, and Peranakan. Their catering setup is asthetically pleasing and attractive, with staff working quickly and efficiently.

Second, Grain Catering takes pride in delivering high quality catered food. Their dishes arrive looking fresh, vibrant, and appetizing. Never overcooked or limp, the consistent execution is a plus point for them over their competitors. I understand they hire chefs who each specialise in specific cuisines or a range of dishes.

Third, they are vegetarian and vegan friendly, something many other catering brands in Singapore have yet to match. Each sub-section of their menu usually has 1 or 2 vegetarian options, and this effort to be inclusive makes it easy for customers.

Fourth, their dishes are nutritious and healthy, freshly prepared, with spices to give flavour, and less reliance on seasoning. Their menus are designed to offer a wholesome, balanced meal experience; these are regularly reviewed and updated by their team of in-house chefs.

Fifth, Grain Catering has good customer service, modelled after best-in-class brands. Throughout all our large-scale events, we had an on-site customer account manager and team (thanks Gerald!), who assisted in quick turnarounds between meals within 40 minutes or less. Even their individual bento meals are delivered within 40 minutes or less during peak periods, comparable to other food delivery brands in Singapore (I feel their food quality is better for catering than for bento though).

Despite all these plus points, the prices for Grain Catering are affordable, comparable to most of their competitors. A high tea buffet ranges from SGD $5 - $10 per person for between 3 to 8 courses. A classic buffet ranges from SGD $13 - $20 per person for between 7 to 10 courses. A seminar buffet is priced at SGD $24 per person for 13 courses. All are great value for money. The catering delivery fee is between SGD $64 - $100 per event, and orders have to be finalised with Grain Catering at least 3 working days prior to the event. Minimum order starts from 30 guests.

I've relied on Grain Catering to deliver crowd-pleasing food for several events already, and I have the assurance they will continue to be the gold standard for catering in the near future.

From Aug-2018: Decided to try the SGD $15 per person classic buffet menu for a work event. My distinct impression when we first tried their dishes was the freshness of the ingredients, and the quality of the execution. Meat was properly cooked but not dry, fish was tender and flaky, and the vegetables were crisp and crunchy without being limp.

I loved the Grilled Duo Forest Mushroom Salad for its bright freshness, the smoky Peranakan Grilled Chicken for its bold savoury salty spice flavour, the unique Roasted Cauliflower And Broccoli with its lovely crunch and smoky spice vegetal earthy sweet flavour, and the tasty Red Velvet White Chocolate Chip Cookie.

From Sep-2019: Hosting a team welcome and farewell, so we went all the way. Very amused that their banana cake, from the SGD $20 per person classic buffet menu, is called the "Best Banana Cake I've Ever Had". Is it really the best? Well, it's actually pretty good, with a soft spongy texture and a lovely fruity sweet flavour. Rather addictive, I don't mind having more of it.

The Meatless Meat Balls were a stand-out as well, so delicious with its meaty savoury vegetal salty flavour that you can't tell it's completely vegetarian. Other memorable dishes included the Blackened Red Snapper Fish for its smoky savoury sweet flavour and tender flaky texture, the grainy chewy Basil Rasin Quinoa Tabbouleh for its fruity earthy herbal sweet flavour, and the fresh bouncy 1980s Steamed Tiger Prawn with lovely sweet briny crustacean taste.

From Oct-2019: A series of work events called for breakfast and high tea, so we selected the SGD $5 per person high tea buffet menu. The Egg Mayonnaise Mini Sandwich were a delight with their fluffy soft creamy texture, and bright eggy sweet bready flavour. The Garlic Parmesan Karaage was a hit, with its satisfying crunchy moist texture and robust meaty savoury salty spice flavour.

The Pan-Fried Carrot Cake was delicious, and one of my favourites, but it has to be eaten quickly for you to fully appreciate the soft bouncy chew to texture and bright eggy sweet salty savoury flavour. The Lavender Earl Grey Cake delighted with its soft moist creamy texture and lovely earthy floral sweet flavour. The Mini Chocolate Eclair was popular with the crowd, for its soft spongy chew to the choux pastry, and delicate creamy chocolatey sweet filling of chocolate cream.

From Nov-2019: Another series of work events spanning lunch, so we selected the SGD $24 per person seminar buffet menu. The Mini Apples were brilliant, with a loud juicy crunch and bright fruity sweet flavour. The Cold Buckwheat Soba Noodle Salad was refreshing and slippery soft cruncy juicy, with delicate vegetal grainy sweet earthy flavour. The Sweet Potato Net Roll is good in small amounts, with its light crispy soft crunch and gentle sweet savoury salty flavour.

The Roasted Rainbow Vegetables are beautifully vibrant and attractive, with soft tender texture and deep vegetal smoky sweet earthy flavour. Loved the Mixed Berry Spinach Salad With Roasted Sesame Yuzu Dressing which has a fresh crisp juicy crunch to texture, with bright vegetal fruity sweet sour earthy bitter nutty flavour that is delicious. The Mediterranean Dory, Oregano, Rosemary has a tender flaky texture with deep herbal savoury sweet flavour. The Grilled Honey Dijon Oregano Chicken has tender soft crunchy texture with meaty savoury salty sweet vegetal earthy spice flavour.

From Apr-2020: The ongoing COVID-19 circuit breaker in Singapore means staying home at all times (unless on essential business), enabling opportunities for us to order the bento set meals from halal certified Grain Catering. The thing that irks me with delivered food is when it's soggy, limp, overcooked, dry, or oily... fortunately, Grain Catering serves the complete opposite.

What I love about these bento set meals from Grain Catering is their consistently high quality, delicious, wholesome, and healthy meals, packed with a variety of fresh ingredients. Always well-executed and well presented, I'm particularly impressed with how their meals, after being delivered for some time, still look and taste so good. Their medium-large portion sizes and eco-friendly packaging lends bonus points.

Not your average Seafood Beancurd Skin Roll (SGD $6.95). Wrapped in a thin beancurd skin, with a juicy filling of minced chicken, minced dory fish, carrots, corn, coriander, and spring onions, this is a burst of savoury sweet salty flavour. Served over soft wilted spinach with vegetal sweet flavour, with a garnish of crushed peanuts, in a rich oyster sauce gravy that has bold savoury sweet earthy notes. Tends to be more savoury than sweet though, my personal preference is for more sweet than savoury.

The Caramelised Aubergine (SGD $10.95) is a seasonal dish inspired by the Netflix show 'The Game Changers'. Designed with performance, health, and great taste in mind, this plant-based dish features grilled Korean style doenjang glazed aubergine / brinjal / eggplant, with a soft texture and bold smoky vegetal sweet savoury flavours. The bouncy garden peas and juicy corn kernels lend bright vegetal earthy sweet flavours, while the tender beetroot has deep vegetal sweet herbal notes, and stains everything it touches a vibrant purple red. The base is a mix of lovely Madras curried chickpeas which have a tender chew with bold savoury spice flavours, and soft barley grains with bright vegetal sweet flavours. Really healthy and wholesome. Good!

The Umami Bomb Baked Dory (SGD $8.95) features a medium slab of boneless dory fish fillet, gently pan-seared, till the tender flaky soft fish meat takes on a delicate smoky sweet savoury flavour. The crunchy sauteed garlic French beans have a bright vegetal sweet flavour, while the crisp white onions pickled in pink vinegar lend a sharp sour sweet taste. The light base, a mix of sticky white rice, soft barley, and crunchy edamame / immature soy beans, have a lovely grainy sweet vegetal flavour. But the star which lends the most taste to this dish is the crunchy bits of preserved radish / chye poh, with its bold salty sweet flavours. More filling than I expected too. Highly recommended!

The Sweet Thai-ng Roasted Dory (SGD $8.95) features several medium sized fillets of boneless dory fish, gently pan-seared, till the tender flaky soft fish meat takes on a delicate smoky sweet savoury flavour. The chargrilled vegetables (carrots, shallots) are juicy and tender with bright vegetal sweet flavour, while the juicy pickled cucumbers burst with sharp sour vegetal sweet flavour. The base of silky soft purple wheat noodles dressed with Thai fish sauce and sliced chili have a mild earthy grainy sweet savoury spicy flavour, which makes the dish rather enticing. Worth ordering!

The Provencal Herb Roasted Chicken (SGD $8.95) has succulent boneless chicken thigh, marinated with French herbs (including parsley, chives, thyme, and tarragon) then gently roasted. The result is a tender and moist chicken, with nice savoury sweet herbal smoky flavours. The oven-roasted carrots and tomatoes are tender juicy with bright vegetal sweet flavour, while the juicy pickled cucumbers burst with sharp sour vegetal sweet flavour. The base of fluffy soft sesame barley rice has delicate grainy earthy sweet notes. Visually though, it looks unexciting. Could be improved.

The Hearty Coconut Beef Rendang (SGD $8.95) lives up to its name, and packs a bold medley of tastes. The tender cubes of beef and potatoes are generously marinated in the rich thick beef rendang gravy, which results in robust savoury salty herbal spice flavour. The slippery cruncy black fungus / cloud ear fungus and tender soft wok-fried lady's finger / okra pieces hold bright vegetal earthy sweet flavour, while the juicy crunchy pickled achar / Peranakan spicy pickled salad of pineapple, cucumber, and tomato hold sharp tangy sour sweet flavour. The base of fluffy white rice infused with butterfly pea flower, coconut milk, and lime juice has bright milky grainy earthy sweet flavour. So yummy. Highly recommended!

The Grilled Farm Fresh Chicken (SGD $11.95) features succulent boneless chicken thigh, rubbed with herbs and spices (including rosemary, garlic, cajun seasoning, tandoori powder, and lime powder) then perfectly grilled. Each bite is a bold hit of savoury sweet herbal spice flavours, and the chicken thigh is nicely moist and tender, with little fat under the skin. The juicy cherry tomatoes seasoned with oregano infused olive oil have a lovely floral herbal vegetal sweet taste. The charred broccoli florets are beautifully crunchy with smoky vegetal sweet flavour, while the soft caramelised white onions have a smoky sweet earthy taste. The light multi-grain rice, made with a mix of brown rice, black rice, and cajun seasoning, has a light grainy sweet spice flavour. A dollop of basil and garlic pesto lends robust earthy herbal vegetal grassy notes to complete. Highly recommended!

The Torched Sous Vide Salmon (SGD $16.95) features a warm, pink, succulent boneless fillet of Norwegian salmon fish. Cooked via sous-vide to a lovely medium-well doneness with buttery smooth moist flaky texture, the salmon fish fillet has a delicate sweet savoury natural flavour. The juicy cherry tomatoes seasoned with oregano infused olive oil have a lovely floral herbal vegetal sweet taste. The charred broccoli florets are beautifully crunchy with smoky vegetal sweet flavour, while the crunchy shavings of almonds lend a delicate nutty sweet taste. A light hickory smoked pink barbecue tomato sauce lends a touch of sour tangy notes to the soft bouncy fusilli pasta tossed in rich vegetal sweet tomato pronto sauce. A wholesome dish. The Caramelised Beef Char Siew (SGD $12.95) features tender juicy chunks of unconventional beef shin char siew marinated with black soya sauce, salted bean paste, ginger flower, vegetarian oyster sauce, and maltose, then charcoal roasted. With a light chew to texture, the beef has a robust savoury salty sweet flavour. The tender silky charred aubergine / eggplant / brinjal has a lovely smoky vegetal sweet flavour, while the duo mushroom (shiitake, shimeji) mixed with white radish and white vinegar has a tender bouncy chew with bright vegetal earthy sour sweet notes. The garnish of crisp fried curry leaves lends pleasant sharp spice flavour. The blend of sesame seeds, sesame oil, barley, and brown rice, has a nice soft chew to texture, with delicate grainy sweet earthy nutty flavours. Good!

The Nasi Lemak Ayam Masak Merah (SGD $11.95) features succulent boneless chicken thigh, glazed with a rich sambal chili paste. Nicely moist and tender with little fat under the skin, the chicken thigh has bright savoury sweet spice flavours. The crisp ikan bilis / anchovies have a salty savoury crunch, while the juicy home made achar (pineapple, Japanese cucumber, ginger flower) has a sharp sour sweet fruity spice flavour. The soft boiled egg is bouncy with a semi-solid egg yolk and bright eggy sweet notes. The base of fragrant white rice and black rice infused with coconut milk and lemongrass has a light grainy texture, with lovely floral earthy sweet herbal flavours. Garnished with crunchy sunflower seeds in place of peanuts, this resembles the iconic Malay dish, yet is much lighter on the palate. Worth ordering!

Tried the Craft Your Meal Light (SGD $9.95). For the base, we chose the Madras curried chickpeas, which was lovely. Tasty and addictive, but I would have preferred it a little less oily. For the protein, we chose the Cajun grilled chicken, while the choice of vegetable was the charred broccoli florets. We added a topping of jammy soft-boiled egg, which was nicely wobbly soft and half boiled, with the egg yolk being semi-solid and beautiful. Chose the hickory smoked barbecue tomato sauce to complete.

The Mixed Fruit Parcel (SGD $4.95) has a medley of fresh cut juicy fruits, including red grapes, honeydew melon, kiwi fruit, and strawberry slices. Nice fruity sweet flavours here. But also rather expensive for the portion size. Could be improved.

As far as the Salted Egg Yolk Muah Chee (SGD $5.95) goes, this fusion dessert of a mochi glutinous rice cake filled with salted egg yolk and coated in crushed peanuts, is decent enough. There's a light sticky grainy chew to texture, and the flavour is mildly salty sweet savoury in taste. Nothing like true salted egg yolk flavours, but sufficient to be tasty. Could be improved.

Styled like Belgian waffles, what impressed me about the Cinnamon Churro Waffles (SGD $4.95) was how they managed to retain a texture that bordered between dry and moist, even after some time. Spiced with rosemary, cinnamon sugar crystals, cumin, and cayenne pepper, you first get the light crunch of the crisp exterior, followed by the soft chew of the doughy interior. Bold sweet spice floral flavours here. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the temporary closure of all bubble tea outlets across Singapore, the recent partnership of Grain Catering x KOI Thé Singapore on 27th April 2020 (Monday) is now one of the few remaining avenues to get a bubble tea fix. Due to overwhelming demand on the day it was announced, the website crashed - but I love their tongue-in-cheek humor. The website was up and running as usual by the next day.

From May-2020: Partnerships are the name of the game this month, with Grain Catering forging new partnerships with brands like Hot Chick Buns, KOI Thé Singapore, Amazin' Graze, and more. While these other brands don't completely represent the wholesome meals philosophy of Grain Catering, having more options on their platform does offer consumers some variety.

The Golden Bubble Milk Tea (SGD $5) from KOI Thé Singapore is nice. I like it for its milky earthy sweet flavours from the milk and black tea, and the soft gelatinous chew of the tapioca boba pearls. Got this at 0% sugar level, with less ice. Good!

The 300% Fried Chicken Combo (SGD $14.95) from Hot Chick Buns features 3 large, succulent pieces of fried chicken thigh - available in your choice of Original, Chili Lime, or Christmas Peppercorn flavours. There's a choice of sides - either Curvy Fries or Sweet Potato Fries, and a choice of dip. I chose the Chipotle Mayo Dip (SGD $0.95), which was thick and creamy with a savoury spice sweet flavour.

The Original Fried Chicken features a large piece of boneless chicken thigh, coated in a crisp crunchy spiced batter that shatters beautifully. With very little fat under the skin, having been rendered off whilst deep-frying, the chicken meat is tender and borders between dry and moist. Has a bold savoury salty spice flavour. From Aug-2020: Still loving Grain Catering. For Singapore's 55th National Day, they've launched a new series of dishes to celebrate.

Their take on classic Chicken Rice, the Hainanese Sous Vide Chicken Rice (SGD $11.95) features succulent sous vide boneless chicken thigh. Nicely moist and tender with little fat under the skin, the chicken thigh has bright sweet clean flavours. The juicy cherry tomatoes and crunchy cucumber slices have lovely vegetal sweet flavour. The soft boiled egg is bouncy with a semi-solid egg yolk and bright eggy sweet notes. The base of fragrant brown rice is infused with lemongrass and pandan / screwpine leaf, resulting in a light grainy fluffy texture with lovely floral earthy sweet flavours. Sides of salty savoury dark soy sauce, fiery spicy chili sauce, and fragrant herbal spice minced ginger sauce completes this yummy dish. Good!

The Seafood Laksa Hokkien Mee (SGD $13.95) is an example of how combining 2 classic favourites doesn't actually make a 'better' dish. It features a base of soft yellow egg noodles and rice vermicelli, garnished with wispy egg, crunchy bean sprouts, crisp garlic chives, and spongy tofu beancurd puffs. There's a medley of fresh bouncy seafood, including baby scallops, deshelled prawns, and squid, all bright and sweet savoury in flavour. Like a wet version of Hokkien Mee with Laksa notes, the thick gravy is a complex blend of chicken stock, fish sauce, calamansi juice, laksa pasta, garlic, and prawn stock. Tastes of both dishes with sour savoury spicy herbal notes, but lacking the distinctive edge that makes each individual dish good - missing the wok hei / breath of the wok from the Hokkien Mee, and missing the sharp spicy lemak punch of the Laksa. Served with a decent sambal belachan on the side. Could be improved.

After a short hiatus, the popular South African Rub Impossible Hamburg (SGD $19.95) vegetarian dish returns. The base is a vibrant, colourful base of crunchy juicy root vegetables (including diced turnip, carrot, and purple sweet potato), having a robust sweet spice salty savoury earthy herbal flavour from the seasoning of ginger, garlic, sweet prune powder, sugar, curry leaves, salt, black pepper, cumin powder, coriander powder, curry powder, nutmeg powder, and olive oil. The impossible meat hamburger patty has a chewy tender texture, with bold meaty savoury salty spice notes, tricking you into forgetting this is a vegetarian dish. Slightly more expensive than other dishes though. Worth ordering!
