Opened in August 2018, Black Fairy Coffee is supposedly a magical themed cafe and gastrobar, yet in reality, it seems like a random mash-up of elements. It's a nice place for sure, just that there's a disconnect if you try to think about their theme. Still, Black Fairy Coffee is an alright place to chill if you're nearby, as the ambience and food are both above average.

Ambience at Black Fairy Coffee is elegant, yet laid-back and casual. The brightly lit place has 2 tiers of seats, the lower tier has round marble-topped tables with brown easy chairs, while the upper tier has communal square tables surrounded by mahagony lounge chairs. Decorative light bulbs hang from the ceiling, while neat and well-stocked shelves draw the eye. Vibrant, colourful artwork adorns the wall; these are pieces bought by owner Kenny Liu in support of TAD Charity.

Service at Black Fairy Coffee is friendly and polite. Much of it is self-service, from ordering and payment over the counter, to helping yourself to the complimentary water from the dispenser. Staff will serve orders to your table, and also engage in conversation if you choose. They display decent product knowledge, being able to describe dishes briefly, and are efficient at cleaning up when diners leave. I like that they ask if diners are comfortable during the visit.

Food at Black Fairy Coffee is Modern European and Modern Asian. Dishes are large and hearty in portion, and can be shared. Generally, the kitchen team executes it to an above average standard for a cafe. There are 2 menus; an all-day dining menu for the mornings and afternoons, and a gastrobar menu for the evenings. Prices are higher than most cafes, budget about SGD $30 per person for a meal here.

The Hot Chocolate (SGD $5.50) here is decently enjoyable. It has a medium thick texture, being slightly creamy smooth, and has a mild chocolatey bitter sweet flavour. I would have liked more depth of taste, but it's alright as is.

A straightforward Cafe Latte (SGD $5), that's more milky sweet in flavour. The taste of the roasted coffee beans is very mild, but also not acidic. Below average. Could be improved.

The Popcorn Cafe Latte (SGD $5.50) lacks strength of espresso, but the mixture of popcorn syrup lends it a fragrant, sticky sweet aroma that calls to mind the iconic movie snack. More milky in texture than I'd like, lacking the bitter toasty flavours of coffee. The aroma of popcorn is fantastic though.

The Beer Hoegaarden Wheat (SGD $12) is a well-known Belgian witbier, brewed by the Hoegaarden Brewery in the Hoegaarden municipality within the province of Flemish Brabant, in the Flanders region of Belgium. It has a hazy, pale yellow colour, with aromas of spices that went into making it, such as coriander and orange peel. The body is light and crisp, with a high carbonation, tastes of wheat, orange zest, banana, and pepper. Very refreshing and drinkable, sweet with low bitterness, and a short finish.

The Beer Stella Artois (SGD $12) is a Belgian pilsner, brewed by Anheuser-Busch InBev in Leuven, Flemish Brabant province, Flanders region, Belgium. It has a bright canary golden colour, with aromas and tastes of cracker malts, hops, barley, and straw. The body is light, crisp, and dry, with sweet bitter herbal metallic flavours. Refreshing and drinkable, with a short, quick finish.

Loved the generous portion of the Smoked Salmon Scrambled Egg Bagel (SGD $20). Served with a side of fresh crunchy mesclun salad (wild rocket leaves / arugula, spinach, chard), whose vegetal bitter earthy sweet flavours are complemented by the rich nutty peanut sauce. The buttered toasted sesame seed bagel has a crisp, slightly crunchy spongy texture, with a fragrant nutty bready sweet flavour. The mound of soft scrambled eggs is mixed with chunks of smoked salmon fish, giving it a salty savoury eggy sweet flavour. A garnish of crunchy red onions completes this, lending a vegetal tangy herbal note. Good!

The BFC Shredded Pork Benny (SGD $20) is pretty good. Served with a side of fresh crunchy mesclun salad (wild rocket leaves / arugula, spinach, chard), whose vegetal bitter earthy sweet flavours are complemented by the rich nutty peanut sauce. The brioche bread muffins are soft and spongy in texture, with a bready sweet flavour. A generous portion of shredded pork in rich gravy sits over it, with delicious sweet savoury flavour, although the texture of the pork wasn't as tender as I'd like, being more stringy chewy instead. Topped with perfectly poached eggs with home made hollandaise sauce. Cut into the runny egg yolk, and watch it ooze all over the pork and muffins, blending with the gravy beautifully. Each mouthful is a delight. Good!

Absolutely loved the Soy Chicken Bites (SGD $13.90), these are the best thing I've eaten here. The large, boneless chicken chunks are fried Korean style, with a thin, crispy crunch to the skin, yet the chicken remains tender and juicy. Generously marinated in a rich sticky thick soy sauce glaze, lending robust salty sweet savoury flavour. An excellent bar snack for sharing. Highly recommended!

The BFC Signature Pork Ribs (SGD $24) features a half-slab of baby back pork ribs, coated in a sticky rich barbecue sauce which has tangy sweet sour flavour. The pork ribs are nicely tender with a light chew, coming easily off the bone, but carry a slight gamey taste over the natural sweet savoury flavours. Served with a side of fresh crunchy mesclun salad (wild rocket leaves / arugula, spinach, chard), whose vegetal bitter earthy sweet flavours are complemented by the rich nutty peanut sauce. Also, while the menu claimed this is served with mashed potato, it arrived with crisp potato shoestring fries instead, that had an addictive salty savoury flavour. Worth ordering!

The Yam Orh Nee Cake (SGD $6.90) has a soft, creamy texture. The sponge cake itself borders moist and dry, and is layered with yam / taro buttercream. Topped with a single dry gingko nut, this dessert cake has mild earthy sweet nutty flavour. Not as tasty as I'd like, and the texture is also a little off. Could be improved.

The Ondeh-Ondeh Cake (SGD $6.90) has a soft, creamy texture. The sponge cake itself borders moist and dry, and is infused with fragrant pandan / screwpine leaf juice, then layered with gula melaka / palm sugar buttercream, and gula melaka / palm sugar caramel. Topped with bits of desiccated coconut, this lovely dessert cake has a bold floral earthy sweet flavour. Worth ordering!

Positioned as a dessert, the Banana French Toast (SGD $7.50) was saved because of its toppings. The thick toast itself was slightly burnt on the edges and dry, though the center still retained a soft spongy texture, and bready sweet flavour. The caramelised banana was tender and juicy, with a bold fruity sweet flavour. Completed with chewy dried cranberries with bright fruity sweet flavour, crunchy sunflower seeds with earthy nutty flavour, and a house made strawberry compote which was thick and fruity sweet in flavour. Would have been happier if the toast was better. Could be improved.
