Established in June 2019 by co-founders Claire Francis and Jerome Seow from the now-defunct Fitness Ration (a meal preparation service tailored for athletes), Fresher is a ready-to-eat meal preparation delivery company specialising in wholesome, sustainably-sourced meals. Catering healthy and exciting international meals for families and businesses, with all dishes made from scratch in small batches, Fresher espouses a philosophy of well-being, for people and the environment.

The individually-sized meal portions from Fresher are thoughtfully designed to cater for specific health diets, such as keto-friendly, low carbohydrates, or high protein. Prepared in-house by hand using sustainable ingredients, each original menu features a range of international dishes that can take up to 1 month to research, design, and test. The result is meals from Fresher are healthy, tasty, and sufficient for individuals, good enough to be enjoyed on a daily basis. Fresher is not halal-certified, but they do not use any pork, lard, or alcohol.

Note that Fresher is not like other food delivery services, which deliver meals-on-demand. The service and delivery concept at Fresher operates on a weekly basis - what this means is their delivery service only delivers on weekends and in bulk, encouraging a lifestyle of planning a week's worth of meals in advance. By planning ahead for next week's meals, customers will have a healthier, controlled diet. It's also environmentally friendly, with less packaging (being delivered in bulk) and less carbon footprint through minimal use of vehicles.

Fresher immediately blast-chills its freshly cooked meals, ensuring all meals retain its nutrition, taste, and texture. These frozen, ready-to-eat meals are then delivered to you (only on weekends), and can be safely stored in the refrigerator freezer for up to 1 month. Preparing a Fresher meal is so convenient, simply defrost in the refrigerator chiller for at least 12 hours, then microwave it on medium high heat for about 3 - 5 minutes. Note that a minimum of SGD $50 is required to place an order with Fresher (which means each individual meal portion is about SGD $15 per meal), and you'll also have to select a delivery time slot on the weekends.

Compared to other ready-to-eat meal preparation delivery companies, Fresher wins on quality, taste, and presentation of their dishes. There's a wide variety of dishes, with some changing weekly. However, they have less substantial portion sizes, with prices that are marginally higher. Overall, I enjoyed the meals from Fresher, and have since ordered several times.

The Peanut Chicken Stew (SGD $13.40) is a Malian inspired dish, also known as Maafe. The base of the stew is a thick, creamy, rich gravy made with tomatoes, white onions, paprika, crushed peanuts, 100% natural peanut butter, and other spices, giving it a lovely vegetal sweet savoury spicy nutty flavour, with a slight fiery bite. It's given a modern twist with the garnishes; from spongy tofu beancurd cubes with a light grainy sweet flavour, to crunchy oven roasted brussels sprouts with a vegetal bitter sweet taste. Completed with tender chunks of boneless roasted chicken, which hold lovely sweet savoury flavour. A unique and tasty dish, though I'd have liked it to be slightly more substantial. Worth ordering!

The 36-Hour Sous-Vide Duck Confit (SGD $14.50) is a classic French inspired dish. The large duck leg is cooked in its own fat for 36 hours, resulting in the duck meat being juicy and tender, coming easily off the bone, with a bold meaty savoury salty flavour. Accompanied by crunchy oven roasted brussels sprouts with a vegetal bitter sweet taste. Instead of mashed potatoes, they've substituted it for creamy mashed cauliflower spiced with black pepper. This was interesting in a good way, with an addictive vegetal sweet peppery spice taste that was delicious. While light on carbohydrates, this was filling and satisfying. Highly recommended!

The Low-Carb Chicken Breast In Green Nut Butter (SGD $10.95) is a mash-up British and Indian inspired modern dish. The 'rice' base doesn't contain rice at all, instead, it's a blend of roasted ginger, turmeric infused cauliflower, and roasted chickpeas, blitzed till it has a loose grainy texture similar to rice, with a bright earthy sweet spice smoky flavour. Paired with crunchy wilted spinach with bold vegetal sweet bitter flavour, and tender fillets of clean-tasting boneless chicken breast with a sweet savoury flavour. Completed with the house blend green nut butter (pesto), which blends olive oil, tahini, parsley, cilantro, scallions, cumin, salt, and garlic, giving it a bright vegetal earthy herbal sweet salty flavour with a thick grainy texture. Yummy and filling. Highly recommended!

The Moqueca Stew With Sustainable Hoki Fish (SGD $12.45) is a Brazillian inspired dish. The stew is an aromatic broth of coconut milk, red peppers, tomato paste, olive oil, chili, salt, garlic, white pepper, paprika, cumin, and fish sauce, similar to a curry. Has a bright vegetal sweet sour spicy flavour, with a sharp fiery kick that fades quickly. Garnished with crisp spring onions, the sustainable boneless hoki fish fillets are tender and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, with a sweet savoury taste, but carry a mildly off-putting sour aroma that is odd. A chunky mashed potato with lovely starchy sweet flavour completes the dish. I felt this was rather light, and would be better if it was more substantial. Could be improved.

The Sugar-Free Green Beef Curry (SGD $13.90) is a Thai inspired dish. The green curry base is aromatic with beautiful earthy milky sweet savoury herbal flavour. Instead of baby corn, I received a garnish of crunchy sweet peas which had bright vegetal sweet flavour, alongside tender roasted aubergine / eggplant / brinjal with earthy sweet smoky flavour. The chunks of beef had a light chew to texture, with robust meaty savoury salty flavour. Completed with chewy baiye tofu skin noodles which picks up the flavour of the green curry well. Nicely filling. Good!

The One-Pan Herb Blackened Tilapia (SGD $12.95) is an American Cajun inspired dish. The ethically-farmed boneless tilapia fish is rubbed with natural brown sugar, salt, paprika, cumin, oregano, olive oil, and cayenne pepper, then roasted till the surface blackens and turns slightly crisp. Within, the tilapia fish meat is still tender, flaky, and moist, with a delicate sweet savoury spice flavour. Accompanied with tender chunks of roasted sweet potato that have bright floral earthy sweet savoury flavour, and soft caramelised red onions with sweet smoky flavour. The crunchy charred broccoli florets have a robust smoky vegetal sweet salty flavour. Completed with a refreshing creamy house-made cucumber tzatziki, which lends a bright burst of vegetal milky sweet flavour to contrast the bold flavours here. Good!

The Grandma-Approved Steamed Halibut (SGD $13.75) is a Chinese Cantonese inspired dish. Topped with aromatics such as quick-fried ginger crisps and charred salted coriander, the boneless steamed halibut fish is tender, flaky, and moist, with a beautiful sweet savoury flavour. A gravy of light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, salt, sugar, and oyster sauce lends a deep earthy salty savoury note. Accompanied with crisp bok choy / Chinese cabbage that has vegetal sweet flavour, and tender braised shiitake mushrooms with deep earthy savoury salty flavour. The crunchy black fungus / cloud ear fungus have an earthy woody flavour, while the juicy wolfberries / goji berries hold bright vegetal herbal sweet flavour. Traditionalists would approve. Highly recommended!

The Made-From-Scratch Beef Curry (SGD $12.45) is a Japanese inspired dish. The generous portion of beef is pressure cooked for hours, resulting in a light tender chew with big meaty savoury flavour. The thick and creamy curry has a mild sweet spice note, from aromatics including tender carrots, apple puree, and white onions, making it nicely yummy. Felt the base of pearl white rice lacked the signature fluffy sticky texture, instead being rather dry, though it still has a grainy sweet taste. Completed with crunchy yellow daikon radish pickles for a sharp sour contrast in flavour. Worth ordering!

The Housemade Sugar-Free Salmon Laksa (SGD $14.50) is a Singaporean inspired dish. It was the most disappointing meal, as it requires more preparation time - I had to rehydrate the zero-calorie konjac noodles, and even then, they were dry and clumpy, sticking together with a stringy texture. The crunchy sugar snap peas and crisp bean sprouts have bright vegetal sweet flavour, but don't incorporate into the dish well, standing apart distinctly in taste. At least the boneless salmon fish was tender and moist, the flaky chunks having delicate meaty sweet savoury flavour, though it doesn't pick up the gravy well. The laksa gravy is pretty alright, punchy with spicy savoury earthy herbal floral flavours from the aromatics (including coconut, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, laksa paste), but the texture is thin. Could be improved.

The Delightfully Light Citrus & Thyme Fish Orecchiette (SGD $11.95) is an Italian inspired dish. This carbohydrate heavy meal features a base of shell-shaped orecchiette pasta noodles, with a soft, bouncy yield to texture. The bright pesto gravy, thick and herbal earthy in taste, sticks tightly to the pasta, lending it flavour. The tender roasted shiitake mushrooms have a delicate earthy vegetal sweet flavour. Completed with several medium sized fillets of moist and flaky soft boneless dory fish, marinated in lemon juice and thyme, resulting in a bright zesty tangy sour herbal sweet flavour. Filling and tasty. Worth ordering!

The Shrimp Cauliflower Mac N Cheese (SGD $13.90) is an Australian inspired dish. The base of carbohydrate-free 'macaroni' is actually blitzed cauliflower with a loose grainy texture and bright vegetal sweet flavour. It's coated in creamy gooey mozzarella and cheddar cheese with bright cheesy salty flavour. Garnished with 7 - 9 pieces of juicy peeled shrimp, which burst with bright briny salty sweet flavour. Completed with a dash of black pepper for a peppery spice note. While delicious, the heavy flavours quickly tire the palate, making the dish rather one-note and boring halfway through. Needs something to contrast the taste. Could be improved.

The Roasted Tomato Shakshuka With Two Poached Eggs (SGD $13.20) is a Yemeni inspired dish. It's packed with rich thick roasted tomato sauce, house blended with white onions, garlic, diced tomatoes, and toasted cumin, giving it a bright vegetal sweet spice flavour. The crunchy charred broccoli florets have a robust smoky vegetal sweet salty flavour, while the crumbly feta cheese lends a mild milky cheesy note. Surprised the duo of 63 degrees poached eggs remained intact throughout, but broke softly when bit, releasing its eggy sweet flavour. Completed with bouncy uncased chicken sausages with a tender chew and robust meaty salty savoury sweet flavour. Great as a breakfast or lunch dish, loved every bite. Highly recommended!

The Pulled Shawarma Chicken Breast (SGD $10.95) is a Turkish inspired dish. While deceptively simple in looks, the base of fluffy long grain white rice is packed with sweet grainy flavour, while the crunchy purple cabbage holds mild vegetal sweet flavour. The tender hand pulled chicken breast, marinated with turmeric, cumin, salt, thyme, and other spices, then slow cooked for hours, has a light chew to texture with bold meaty savoury spice flavour. Completed with a creamy cucumber tzatziki made with diced cucumbers, non-fat yoghurt, lime juice, and dill. This has a bright milky herbal sweet sour zesty tangy flavour, contrasting well with the other ingredients. Good!

The Handformed Salmon Belly, Celeriac & Dill Cakes (SGD $13.90) is a Norwegian inspired dish. Looks plain, but packs bold flavours. The tender flaky slow poached salmon fish belly cakes are studded with chopped celeriac, white onions, and dill, giving it a robust meaty sweet savoury herbal flavour. The crunchy broccoli florets are roasted with garlic, imparting a spice note to its natural vegetal sweet flavour. Completed with housemade tartar sauce, thick and creamy with a light milky sweet salty savoury flavour. Good!

Update Jun-2021: It's the middle of the tightened restrictions in Singapore during this time, and I returned to Fresher for more easy to prepare meals. Fresher has expanded their menu from 1 year ago, and their international selection of dishes are now more enticing, with better quality as well.

Fresher has gone the sustainable route, doing away with their old styrofoam delivery boxes, and switching to the Insulated Carrier Bag (SGD $9.50). Tagged with your name, the insulated carrier bag fits up to 21 meals, keeping it chilled for up to 4 hours (though you should store the meals in the freezer immediately upon receiving the delivery).

The Sour Cream Slow Cooked Beef Ribeye Stroganoff (SGD $13.95) is a Russian inspired dish. Hearty and meaty, this includes chewy lean beef ribeye with meaty savoury flavour, tender shiitake mushrooms with vegetal earthy flavour, and juicy long beans, soft white onions, and crunchy celery, all having vegetal sweet flavour. The thin yet tasty gravy of full cream, olive oil, garlic, butter, dijon mustard, thyme, salt, black pepper, and Tatua sour cream, lends a bold tangy sour herbal sweet salty spice flavour. Carbohydrate free and big on protein to support working out. Worth ordering!

The Baked Sea Bass Fish In Sundried Tomato Salsa Rojo (SGD $14.20) is a Mexican inspired dish. The star is the robust salsa rojo sauce, a rich thick gravy made with a blend of seasoned sundried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, white onions, and red peppers, spiced with paprika, cilantro, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and parsley, giving this a bright vegetal floral herbal sweet salty spice flavour. The large sea bass fish fillet is relatively boneless, with a tender flaky moist texture, and mild sweet savoury flavour. The tender roasted baby potatoes are infused with rosemary, salt, and black pepper, giving them a starchy herbal salty spice sweet flavour. Completed with a base of fluffy couscous infused with garlic, butter, tomato paste, and olive oil, resulting in a bright grainy sweet vegetal flavour. A delicious dish that's great for restoring energy. Highly recommended!

The Nasi Lemak Cauliflower With Baked Ginger-Turmeric Chicken Leg (SGD $13.90) is a Malaysian inspired dish, albeit a much healthier rendition. This sugar-free and carbohydrate-free dish replaces the coconut milk infused white rice, with shredded cauliflower immersed in pandan / screwpine leaf and coconut cream instead, resulting in a fluffy texture and delicate earthy vegetal sweet floral flavour. The large ginger, turmeric, and curry powder marinated chicken leg is tender and juicy, with the chicken meat coming cleanly off the bone, and holding decent savoury sweet spice flavour. There's also a bouncy egg and cheddar cheese fritatta with eggy sweet cheesy salty flavour, and crunchy salted anchovies with salty savoury flavour. Completed with smooth house-blend sambal made with red chili, tamarind juice, lime juice, and salt, resulting in a bright salty spicy sour flavour. Good!

The Basil Chicken Paprikash (SGD $14.20) is a Hungarian inspired dish, but was rather lacklustre overall. It features tender moist boneless chicken chunks with basil leaves and white onions in creamy yoghurt and whole milk, crunchy roasted brussels sprouts, and bouncy buckwheat, in a thick creamy gravy of tomatoes, butter, salt, red peppers, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Has bright vegetal sweet grainy savoury salty flavour, with a light touch of spice. Somewhat between a stew and a dry meal, this didn't appeal to me personally, as it lacks the bold punchy flavours of the classic dish. Could be improved.

The Dill Crusted Salmon (SGD $14.20) is a New Zealander inspired dish. It features a medium-sized, tender flaky moist boneless salmon fish fillet, layered with a crisp crust of all-purpose flour, eggs, panko bread crumbs, and dill. The result is a mild grainy herbal sweet savoury salty flavour, with the salmon fish cooked till medium well. Supported with juicy roasted string beans with vegetal sweet flavour, and a tender soft medley of purple sweet potatoes and carrots marinated in orange juice with starchy vegetal fruity sweet flavour. Good!

The Torched Doenjang Mackerel (SGD $13.20) is a South Korean inspired dish. It features a large, tender flaky oily boneless mackerel fish fillet, marinated with deonjang miso paste and torched lightly, giving it a bold smoky earthy salty sweet savoury flavour. The duo of mushrooms (shiitake and shimeiji) are juicy bouncy in texture, with vegetal earthy sweet flavour. Completed with a base of fluffy brown rice seasoned with garlic, ginger, salt, lime juice, and olive oil, resulting in a deep grainy spice sweet flavour. Slices of crunchy leeks and scallions with vegetal sweet herbal flavour complete this dish. Highly recommended!

The Carb-Free Smoked Beef Pepperoni Pizza (SGD $13.90) is a Canadian inspired dish, and is tastier than it looks. It features a gluten-free dough formula that is carbohydrate-free, topped with housemade tomato paste, white onions, spinach leaves, button mushrooms, oregano, smoked beef pepperoni, shredded mozzarella cheese, and parmesan cheese. With tender crisp chewy moist gooey textures, and bold meaty savoury vegetal sweet cheesy salty earthy flavour, this was yummy. I found it very appealing and rather fun to eat. Highly recommended!

The Roasted Tomato & Basil Fideos Con Tuco (SGD $11.90) is an Uruguayan inspired dish, a type of pasta dish. It features an all-natural chunky sauce of roasted tomato, basil leaves, salt, garlic, black pepper, and olive oil, over soft fusilli pasta noodles. The result is a bright vegetal sweet savoury spice flavour, yum. Paired with chewy slow-cooked pulled shredded chicken with savoury sweet flavour, and juicy hormone-free chicken sausages with meaty savoury salty flavour. Good!
