Established since September 2016, Dim Sum Haus is a casual eatery specialising in dim sum. Among the more popular dim sum places along Jalan Besar, Dim Sum Haus stands out for its consistent execution of the basic items, their all-day menu, as well as their affordable pricing.
Ambience at Dim Sum Haus is bright, clean, and functional. The simple but brightly lit place is neatly lined with functional modern furnishings, with colourful chairs that pop. Fully air-conditioned but with limited seating, expect to queue during peak dining periods. I also like that there isn't much cooking odour within.
Service at Dim Sum Haus is upbeat, happy, and friendly. Staff converse with customers over the counter, and are willing to accomodate reasonable requests. There's some display of product knowledge, especially when staff offer recommendations, and I note they work quickly to clean up when diners are finished. Payment is self-service at the counter.
Food at Dim Sum Haus is focused on casual Chinese Cantonese cuisine, such as noodles, congee, and dim sum. They're known for fresh ingredients and consistently good quality of dishes, packed with flavour. Portions are sized for communal group dining. Prices are affordable, budget about SGD $18 per person.

A mug of Warm Water (SGD $0.50), which is refillable. Drinking water is healthy and aids digestion!

The house-made Iced Lemon Barley (SGD $2.80) has a bold fruity sour sweet grainy flavour, very nice and refreshing. I like that it's well balanced, not overly sweet or sour in taste. However, I wished they served it with a long spoon, so as to get at the barley grains within.

A straightforward Soya Bean (SGD $2.90), the processed and bottled version. Has a decent earthy grainy sweet flavour that is rather mild, and not overly sweet.

The Jasmine Tea (SGD $1.80) has a floral earthy sweet flavour, but is much lighter than expected, being overall rather mild. Could be improved.

The Har Gow / Shrimp Dumplings (SGD $5.40) here is good. The medium thin dumpling skin has a light chew, and doesn't break easily. Lovely hand-folded pleats on the skin. Generously filled with fresh deshelled prawns / shrimp, with bold sweet savoury flavour. Good!

The Siew Mai / Pork And Shrimp Dumplings (SGD $5.10) is warm and inviting, with a juicy tender chew to the minced pork and deshelled prawns / shrimp. With a lovely sweet savoury flavour, this was delicious. Good!

The Hak Kam Kai Siew Mai / Charcoal Chicken And Shrimp Dumplings (SGD $5.20) sounds unique, but generally, doesn't stand-out much. Visually, the charcoal infused dumpling skin looks appealing, but the taste profile is so similar to the original version, even with the addition of tobiko / flying fish roe, there's not much difference herein. That said, it does taste pretty good, and the photo opportunity is decent. Worth ordering!

The Steamed Pork Ribs With Yam (SGD $4.30) has large chunky pieces of bone-in pork ribs, with a tender crunchy chew to texture and robust salty savoury meaty flavour. Garnished with soft tender cubes of yam / taro with earthy sweet starchy flavour, and soft black beans which burst with earthy salty flavour. This was so delicious and satisfying with its portion size, but almost requires a pairing with congee to balance out its strength. Highly recommended!

The Wontons In Chili Oil & Black Vinegar (SGD $5.80) are alright. The thin dumpling skin yields easily, revealing the generous filling of juicy minced pork within. The sauce of chili oil and black vinegar lends a sour savoury spicy flavour, but it's not as strong as I'd like. Decent enough, but not fantastic. Worth ordering!

The Crystal Skin Prawn Dumplings With Spinach (SGD $4.70) have a medium thick, sticky chewy rice flour dumpling wrapper. Within, it's stuffed with juicy deshelled prawns / shrimp, and crunchy spinach leaves. This has bright vegetal sweet savoury grainy flavour, and is satisfying. Good!

Hand folded and pleated, the Xiao Long Bao / Shanghai Pork Dumplings (SGD $4.70) here is above average in quality. The medium thin dumpling skin yields easily, releasing the savoury sweet meat broth, and the tender minced pork with sweet savoury flavour. Pretty good. Worth ordering!

The Steamed Rice Roll With Crispy Fritter & Shrimp (SGD $5.50) is made to order, and has a light bounce to texture for the silky smooth rice roll. The contrast of crunch from the fried dough fritter, against the juicy deshelled prawns / shrimp with natural sweet savoury flavour, is nicely satisfying. Wish there was a little more soy sauce for greater salty savoury flavour. Good!

Loved the Steamed Chicken Feet With 5-Spice Broth (SGD $4.50), primarily for the flavourful herbal gravy broth, with its deep herbal bitter spice sweet flavour. The chicken feet is plump, with a decent amount of fats and chicken meat, but the star is the broth. Good!

The Deep-Fried Beancurd Skin With Fresh Shrimp (SGD $5) was well executed, with the fried beancurd skin being crisp and crunchy, with light grainy savoury salty flavour. The juicy deshelled prawns / shrimp within lends good sweet savoury flavour, completing this straightforward dish. Worth ordering!

Disappointed with the Yam Puff (SGD $5.30). While the exterior was crisp and light, the interior of the yam puff / taro puff was barely filled and hollow. The blend of yam / taro cubes with minced pork has a mild earthy savoury salty sweet flavour, but their version falls short in quality compared to other versions elsewhere. Could be improved.

The Deep-Fried Banana With Red Bean Paste Roll (SGD $4.80) is a seasonal special, and is considered a dessert style dim sum. The gooey soft banana is wrapped with sticky thick red bean paste and a crispy flour cracker netting. Bite in and hear the satisfying crunch, then you get the lovely fruity earthy sweet flavour of the ingredients. Highly recommended!

The Deep-Fried Shrimp & Mango Roll (SGD $5.80) features fresh bouncy deshelled prawns / shrimp, layered with soft mango, wrapped in a crispy flour cracker netting, glazed with mango sauce. The bold fruity sweet notes of the mango are most evident here, followed by the sweet savoury flavour of the prawns / shrimp. Highly recommended!

The Fried Carrot Cake With X.O. Sauce (SGD $6.70) was lovely, with medium cubes of soft tender bouncy daikon radish cake, tossed with dried shrimp paste, crunchy bean sprouts, and wispy egg, then garnished with red chili and spring onions. The result is an addictive savoury eggy sweet salty vegetal flavour. Yum, kept reaching for more. Highly recommended!

The Pan-Fried Mushroom Bun (SGD $5.80) is designed to visually resemble a mushroom, but the outstanding aspect of this is the crisp pan-fried base contrasted with the fluffy soft bun. While the filling of diced chicken and shiitake mushrooms has robust earthy savoury salty flavour, the filling is scanty, and ultimately, lets this dish down. Could be improved.

The Pandan Lotus Paste Bun (SGD $4.40) is a unique twist on the typical Lotus Paste Bun. Here, the fluffy soft bao / bun is infused with pandan / screwpine leaf essense, as is the sticky thick lotus seed paste. The result is an addictive layer of floral earthy notes, complementing the earthy grainy sweet flavour of the bun, really nice. Highly recommended!

The house signature, and its most popular dish, it's easy to see why nearly everyone loves the Baked Salted Egg Custard Bun (SGD $5.90). A warm and crisp cookie-dough crusted bun that tears open easily, causing the thick rich gooey filling of salted egg yolk to burst forth. With delicious salty savoury sweet grainy flavour, this is a must-order. Highly recommended!

The Deep-Fried Fish Skin With Salted Egg Yolk (SGD $8.30) is a seasonal special, and features large pieces of crispy crunchy fried fish skin, which cracks satisfyingly when bit. With bold salty savoury flavour from the rich thick salted egg yolk sauce gravy, this was a very pleasing appetizer. Highly recommended!

The Fried Shrimp In Wasabi Sauce Salad (SGD $11.50) was a bit of a let-down, because I expected the deshelled prawns / shrimp to be larger and more juicy. This was rather flat, and the wasabi mayonnaise sauce was far too mild, lacking in the sharp spicy kick. The canned fruits over the top were warm, and did little to lift the dish despite their fruity sweet flavour. Could be improved.

The Hong Kong Boat Congee (SGD $8) is a satisfying bowl of thick gloopy rice congee that is best shared for its comforting sweet grainy savoury flavour. Garnished with a generous amount of ingredients, including soft braised peanuts with nutty salty flavour, slippery cuttlefish with natural sweet flavour, tender Spanish mackerel fish slices with sweet savoury flavour, bouncy dried scallops with meaty savoury flavour, crisp spring onions with vegetal sweet flavour, and crunchy fried dough fritters with grainy sweet bready flavour. Good!
