Opening its doors in September 2018 and headlined by DJs The Muttons (Justin Ang and Vernon Anthonisz) in partnership with F&B brands Roast Paradise (founders Randall Gan and Kai Koh) and Fat Boys (founder Bernie Tay), Fook Kin may intentionally sound naughty but is also derived from the Chinese Mandarin words '福劲' which means 'Blessing'. A blend of modern and traditional, Fook Kin is a good casual eatery worth a visit, thanks to its delicious food, attentive service, and vibrant ambience.
Ambience at Fook Kin blends the old with the new. The facade features a traditional Chinese Mandarin engraved signboard, with sturdy metal grille gates serving as a wall of sorts. But step in, and the place resembles a dive bar, with bright neon lights, quirky mural wall paintings artwork, warm lamps within hanging bird cages, and modern metal chairs around sturdy marble-topped tables. There's also the display of roast meats behind a glass panel, looking so appetizing.
Service at Fook Kin is well performed by the mostly senior staff. They're engaging and attentive, according diners good attention. I note they clean up quickly when diners leave, and sometimes offer to clear finished plates and refill drinks. Staff introduce dishes as they serve, but with the digital menu having good descriptions and pictures, demonstration of product knowledge isn't really needed from staff. Despite the bustling crowd during peak periods, order fulfilment is relatively quick.
Food at Fook Kin is Chinese Singaporean cuisine, with a smattering of Thai cuisine. Their specialities include Chinese Cantonese roast meats, and Thai inspired stir-frys. Roast Master Randall Gan checks on quality, ensuring the roast meats are up to the same standards as his Roast Paradise outlet. Dishes are consistently well executed, which draws a repeat crowd. Portions are sized for communal group dining. Prices are wallet-friendly and reasonable, budget about SGD $41 per person.

Loved the excellent Chinese Cantonese roast meat Mix Platter Char Siew & Roast Pork (SGD $25). The Char Siew / Marinated Roast Pork Loin has equal parts fat to lean meat, with a tender sticky succulent chew, and bold smoky honeyed sweet savoury flavour. The Sio Bak / Roast Pork Belly has nice layers of fat between the lean meat, the skin crackling with a light crunch to release the tender bouncy pork beneath, carrying mild savoury salty flavour. Paired with a light soy dipping sauce for added savoury salty notes. Highly recommended!

The Chinese Cantonese style Charcoal Herbal Roast Duck (SGD $16 for 1/4 Portion) is rather an acquired taste, as the strong herbal earthy sweet salty savoury flavours of the roast duck may not appeal to all, although I personally loved it. Marinated with angelica root and charcoal roasted, the roast duck has a lovely tender bouncy succulent chew to texture. Good!
