Established in 2006 by 4th generation tea merchant Lim Tian Wee, Gryphon Tea Company is a Singapore gourmet tea brand. A subsidiary of the family's tea-trading business Lim Lam Thye, whose history stretches back nearly 100 years, Gryphon Tea Company aims to make high-quality, gourmet teas accessible to discerning tea drinkers. The result; innovative artisanal gourmet tea flavours that tease and tantalise the palate.
The Artisan Selection range of teas by Gryphon Tea Company features a range of 19 unique, award-winning tea blends. Carefully handpicked by their master tea blenders, the leaves, herbs, and fruits are combined to create exotic, yet pleasing flavours. Hand blended in small batches which ensures quality, wrapped in translucent silken sachets, the tea blends span the range of black, green, white, rooibos, oolong, and herbal tisane; though pu-erh and fruit tisane are noticeably absent at the moment from the Artisan Selection range.
According to the master blenders at Gryphon Tea Company, a good cup of tea must fulfill 2 criteria. First, the tea leaves must be fresh and of good quality. Second, the water used must enhance, not overpower, the natural flavour of the tea leaves. Besides the 19 flavours in the Artisan Selection range of sachet teas, they also have other ranges of teas, including 57 flavours for the Gourmet Selection range of loose-leaf teas, 17 flavours for the Grand Cru Selection range of boxed teas, and 15 flavours for the Iced range of iced teas.
The Gryphon Tea Company retails their Artisan Selection range of teas in boxes, with each box containing 20 sachets, priced between SGD $17 - $22 per box. I personally find that each sachet can be steeped 2 - 3 times at most. Lifespan can be up to 2 years, though it's best to consume the tea before then. Upon its launch in April 2016, the Artisan Selection 'Treasures' Tea Box (SGD $18.50) quickly sold out both online, and in stores. This collection features an assortment of 10 types of black, green, white, rooibos, and oolong teas from the Artisan Selection. It's a nice starter sampler, a good introduction to gourmet tea, and also makes for a great gift!

The Tomatino tea is a personal favourite of the founder, and stands out for its unique vegetal flavour. This caffeine-free rooibos tea blend is made with organic South Africa rooibos tea leaves, tomato, carrot, apple, beetroot, cinnamon, orange peel, and organic honeybush. It has sweet succulent top notes, then a luscious layer of mild sweet acidity with a hint of savoury resonance. The finish has a slight bitter citrus that quickly fades off the palate, while the vegetal flavour lingers on.

The Mogambo tea when translated from Swahili in polite language, means 'Passion'. This caffeine-free rooibos tea blend is made with organic South Africa rooibos tea leaves, apple, passionfruit, orange peel, pomegranate flowers, and organic honeybush. It has an strong floral fruity aroma that is tangy and juicy, with a moderate acidity that has a contrast of sweet and sour flavours. The finish is short, with sweet and tangy notes, and a slight lingering fruity taste.

The Lily Of The Field tea is so fragrant and floral, it feels like you're drinking a sweet perfume. This modern oolong tea blend is made with 4 seasons oolong tea leaves grown in the mountains of Taiwan, white lily buds, eucalyptus leaves, and marigold flower petals. It has elegant, soft floral notes, with a full-bodied velvety texture, and a mild earthy tone. The finish is floral sweet and lingers delicately. Calming, aromatic, and sophisticated. Perfect for unwinding, this is my favourite tea blend.

The Nymph Of The Nile tea is delicate and floral, very ladylike in nature. This gentle white tea blend is made with organic white peony tea bud & leaves, Persian pink rose petals, rosehips, basil leaves from Egypt, and strawberry leaves. It has a gentle, elegant floral aroma, and a soft, creamy texture on the palate with a nice roundness. The finish has a hint of fruit, very delicate. Tantalising and lovely, this well balanced tea causes a yearning for more.

The White Gingerlily tea is light and soothing, perfect for relieving an upset stomach. This gentle white tea blend is made with organic white peony tea bud & leaves, galangal root from Thailand, lemongrass leaves, eucalyptus leaves, orange blossom petals, lily petals, and lavender petals. It has a strong aroma of herbs and spices with an undertone of floral, a rounded texture with a complex flavour. Notes of floral, spice, herbal, and earthy. The finish is clean and crisp, rather short. Pairs well with spicy food!

The Azteca D'Oro tea calls to mind the mysterious Aztec culture, and their love for cocoa, said to be the food of the Gods. This caffeine-free rooibos tea blend is made with organic South Africa rooibos tea leaves, caramel, cacao nibs, and cacao shells from Madagascar. It has a rich, luscious body, bitter sweet with notes of milk chocolate, followed by an undertone of toasted peanuts. The finish is creamy and lingering, with flavours of sweet toffee. Little wonder this 'xocolatl' was favoured above gold!

The Coba Cabana tea is like a tropical Caribbean summer brew, inspired by fruity cocktails. This caffeine-free rooibos tea blend is made with organic South Africa rooibos tea leaves, lemon myrtle leaves, candied mango, candied pineapple, peppermint leaves, lemon peel, basil leaves, and raw greenbush rooibos tea leaves. It has a medium body, playful and tangy with fruity notes of banana, mango, pineapple, lemon, and coconut, being earthy and sweet in taste. A light acidity keeps it lively. The finish is distinctly herbal and refreshing, a hint of basil and mint, zesty and uplifting. Boldly unconventional, but so good!

The Earl Grey Lavender tea is a true, elegant, timeless classic blend, good for any occasion. This robust black tea blend is made with Ceylonese black tea leaves from Sri Lanka, Provencal lavender flowers from Provence, France, and Calabrian oil of bergamot from Calabria, Italy. The light body has bold floral top notes, followed by vibrant citrus, then earthy undertones. The rich herbal floral flavours is delicate, enveloping the palate in a gentle caress. The finish is strongly perfumed with bergamot. Soothing and relaxing. I notice this tea blend also tends to steep the quickest in hot water.
