Opening in January 2018 within the Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre, The Stew House is operated by 1st time hawker Caleb Tan. As its name suggests, The Stew House is focused on serving hearty stews and curries, all pre-cooked and kept warm in large pots, enabling them to fulfill orders quickly.

Ambience at The Stew House benefits from the bright, open, spacious seating area of Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre. The ample and modern functional furnishings are quirky, colourful, and comfortable, while the open area feels welcoming. The place is designed to be breezy and cool, well suited for lingering.

Service at The Stew House is fast, efficient, and friendly. Although everything is completely self-service, from ordering, to payment, to collection of orders, staff fulfill orders quickly. They're friendly, and display good product knowledge, able to advise diners on the different stews and curries available.

Food at The Stew House is all about stews and curries, inspired largely by French, British, Indian, and Modern Singaporean cuisines. Taste and quality is decent - it's edible, but not as flavourful as it could be. Also, the dishes don't follow the traditional recipes. Portions are sized for individuals, and will fill you up nicely. Prices are affordable, budget about SGD $6 per person for a meal here.

The Chicken And Mushroom Veloute (SGD $5) resembles the French version of the dish, with a thick, creamy mushroom veloute made with a trio of shiitake, button, and straw mushrooms. The chicken chunks within are large and tender, but rather light on taste, indicating they weren't marinated. Got this with Roasted Pumpkin With White Rice (SGD $1), while the white rice was too starchy soft, the pumpkin was lovely and tender sweet, though lacking a smoky aroma.

An underwhelming Chicken Tikka Masala (SGD $5), which is supposed to resemble the British Indian dish. While the curry was rich and nicely savoury spicy, the chicken chunks within weren't marinated, a complete departure of what this dish should be. Being plain, they were light on flavour, and desynchronised from the tasty curry.

The best dish on the menu here, the Beef Bourguignon (SGD $6) resembles the French version of the dish. A thick and hearty stew of beef brisket, shiitake mushrooms, onions, carrots, potatoes, and herbs, the flavours are deeply earthy savoury with hints of salty vegetal sweet. The vegetables within are sufficiently tender, while the beef still has a slightly firm bite, but yields easily. Highly recommended!

The Cream Of Mushroom Soup (SGD $1.50) resembles the French and British versions of the dish. The texture is spot-on, properly rich and thick and creamy, with the trio of mushrooms served generously. However, the flavour profile is not balanced; the taste of cream and butter overwhelms the delicate earthy flavours of the shiitake, straw, and button mushrooms. Even the drizzle of truffle oil doesn't save this. Overall, an underwhelming rendition. Skip this.
