Established in April 2014, Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 is a speciality coffee cafe, popular for its chill, industrial casual ambience and award-winning brews. Located in the Taman Mount Austin industrial area of Johor Bahru, Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 is a hidden-find, an out-of-the-way dining destination that still manages to attract many. I first visited Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 in April 2017, and returned in April 2019.

Ambience at Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 is a highlight. The casual retro industrial vibe carries through with rough brick walls, eclectic cushioned wooden and metal furniture, and their signature high ceiling decorated with corrugated zinc, decorative warm light bulbs, and coffee bean gunney sacks hung from the rafters. Shades of gold, black, grey, brown, red, yellow, and beige dominate. The spacious area has 2 levels of seating, with the lower level having more privacy, but the upper level being more popular for its view of the entire cafe.

Service at Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 is good for a cafe. Staff are friendly and attentive, quickly greeting and seating guests. They display good product knowledge on the menu, and are able to offer suggestions and alternatives. Orders are quickly fulfilled. I note they clear and clean up efficiently when diners leave. Staff are mostly young, and can converse ably in English, Chinese Mandarin, and Malay. You can also engage in conversation with the baristas, if you're seated at the counter.

Food at Just Want Coffee The Factory 30 is focused on barista brewed coffee, with a variety of coffee beans available. This is supported by a short list of mains and desserts, a typical cafe Western and Asian fusion of flavours. Generally, quality and taste of dishes is average, most people come for the brews. Portions are large for individuals, and should rightfully be shared. Prices are slightly higher than most cafes, budget about MYR RM21 / SGD $7 per person for a meal here.

Loved the warm Mocha (MYR RM10 / SGD $3.30) with its robust strength of body, and deep chocolatey sweet toasty flavour to the coffee.

The chilled Classic Cold Rose Latte (MYR RM16 / SGD $5.20) is brewed over 48 hours, and hand-filled into the bottle. It has a delicate floral sweet aroma to the milky sweet toasty notes of the coffee. Nicely refreshing on a warm day.

The unique chilled Salted Coffee (MYR RM16 / SGD $5.20) has a good depth of toasty smoky aroma to the coffee. Topped with a salted foam, the contrast of salty flavour to bitter sweet flavour makes you crave more. Highly recommended!

The pretty chilled Rose Tea (MYR RM12 / SGD $3.90) has a floral sweet earthy flavour, with a calming structure to the body. A glass of ice is served on the side; pour in some of the tea for a sipping experience.

The JWC Fish & Squid Fritters With Chips (MYR RM20.90 / SGD $6.80) features flour-battered chunks of tender dory fish fillet and bouncy squid, sprinkled with Asian 5-spice powder and salt. Nicely moist, though the crisp batter has gone soft, but it holds good savoury salty spice flavour. Served with thick cut potato fries that are rather addictive. A trio of sauces accompany; tomato ketchup, tartar sauce, and the house special pesto sauce which is delicious.

The Chocolate Cake Entremet (MYR RM12.90 / SGD $4.20) features a soft chocolate mousse cake, over an airy chocolate sponge cake base, glazed with chocolate, and studded with chocolate coins. It has a rich chocolatey bitter sweet flavour, but has a semi-dry texture from being chilled too long.

The Tofu Cheesecake (MYR RM9.90 / SGD $3.30) is semi-moist and soft, yielding easily when cut. The tofu cheesecake is set over a grainy graham cookie crumble base, and is garnished with crystalised lime zest, giving this a fruity zesty tangy sour sweet flavour.

The Chocolate Dinosaur Waffle (MYR RM18.50 / SGD $6.10) is appealing in presentation, especially the cute chocolate dinosaur on top. This consists of a semi-crisp, semi-fluffy waffle, topped with chewy marshmallows, cruncy chocolate cereal koko crunch, thin chocolate sauce, sprinkling of chocolate powder, and creamy smooth vanilla ice cream. It has bold grainy chocolatey bitter sweet flavours, hitting all the rights notes for taste, but missing some of the points on texture. Decent enough for a sharing dessert.
