Founded as a humble street food stall in February 2013 in Shilin Night Market, Shilin, Taipei, Taiwan, by couple Steven Hsu and Dong Yinghui, Fong Sheng Hao is named for the bible verse in John 10:10, which talks about the abundant life (fong sheng). Growing on faith and with prayer, Fong Sheng Hao expanded to Singapore in August 2019 through Louis Tan and Benedict Tan. Famed for their delicious charcoal-grilled breakfast toasts and milk tea, it's said that 1 sandwich is sold at Fong Sheng Hao every 36 seconds.
Ambience at Fong Sheng Hao has a cozy, old-school feel. Warmly lit with faux greenery spread around, the bare concrete walls are adorned with murals and artwork, while the kitchen is styled like a wooden shophouse. Traditional stools and tables lend well to chatting and snacking, and the enclosed area carries a sense of bustle with ambient noise trapped within. Some other outlets have a more cafe-like feel, with clean simple lines and minimalist decor.
Service at Fong Sheng Hao is purely self-service, where you order, make payment, and collect over the counter. That said, staff display good product knowledge, and sometimes engage customers in conversation. They also clean up quickly when diners leave. Being popular, queues are well managed at Fong Sheng Hao, and staff will guide diners to their seat when it's ready. Waiting times average about 10 - 20 minutes to get a seat.
Food at Fong Sheng Hao is focused on Taiwanese breakfast dishes, especially charcoal-grilled toast sandwiches. The fragrance of fresh brewed coffee and tea lingers, while around, metal plates are piled with succulent sandwiches. The milk infused toasted bread is baked daily using premium New Zealand butter, then stuffed with meat, egg, and cheese. Portions are sufficient for individuals. Prices are affordable, budget about SGD $9 per person.

The house signature beverage, the Cane Flavoured Black Tea (SGD $3.20) features black tea leaves sourced from Taiwan’s oldest tea shop, the 140-year old Lin Hua Tai Tea, boiled with cane sugar for 12 hours. This infuses the black tea with a gentle sweet earthy floral flavour, balancing out the bitter notes. Comforting and rustic. Good!

Made fresh daily in limited quantities, the Signature Milk Tea (SGD $3.90) is a house special beverage. Has a thin body, but bold milky earthy sweet flavour from the blend of black tea and fresh milk. Well balanced in taste, and properly refreshing. Good!

The Frosting Toast Sticks (SGD $3) are a light snack made with strips of toasted milk bread, layered with rich butter and fine sugar crystals. With a grainy crisp crunch to texture, each bite gets you a pleasant bready sweet buttery smoky flavour. I like that it isn't overly decadent here. Good!

The Pork, Egg, And Cheese Thick Toast Sandwich (SGD $6.30) is yummy. The milk infused toast bread is soft inside, crisp outside, with a bready milky sweet buttery smoky flavour. The pork cutlet is marinated in their house special sauce and grilled perfectly, with juicy chewy texture and bold meaty savoury salty flavour. Completed with fluffy soft egg with eggy sweet flavour, and gooey cheddar cheese with cheesy salty flavour. The thick stack is visually appetizing, and each bite is a satisfying mouthful. Loved the Spicy Pork, Egg, And Cheese With Lettuce Thick Toast Sandwich (SGD $6.90), even though it's so much more messy and unwieldy to consume. The milk infused toast bread is soft inside, crisp outside, with a bready milky sweet buttery smoky flavour. The pork cutlet is marinated in their house special sauce and grilled perfectly, with juicy chewy texture and bold meaty savoury salty flavour. Completed with fluffy soft egg with eggy sweet flavour, fresh crisp lettuce with vegetal sweet flavour, gooey cheddar cheese with cheesy salty flavour, and a thin yet spicy sweet chili sauce. Falls apart easily, as the ingredients are slippery. Highly recommended!

The TW Special Pork Patty, Egg, And Cheese Thick Toast Sandwich (SGD $6.30) is so delicious. The milk infused toast bread is soft inside, crisp outside, with a bready milky sweet buttery smoky flavour. The marinated pork patty is nicely grilled, with a firm moist chew to texture, and enticing savoury salty sweet flavour that reminds me of bak kwa / marinated pork jerky. Completed with fluffy soft egg with eggy sweet flavour, and gooey cheddar cheese with cheesy salty flavour which oozes out like luscious sticky lava. The tall stack is visually enticing, and each bite is a happy mouthful. A right start to the day with this breakfast dish. Highly recommended!

An iconic Taiwanese street side dish, the Lu Rou Fan / Braised Pork Rice (SGD $7.90) here is above average. Over a bed of fragrant fluffy soft steamed white rice is ladelled chewy bouncy juicy minced pork loin and strips of pork belly, having been braised in dark soy sauce and other spices for hours. Garnished with juicy cucumbers and a bouncy soy braised egg to complete. This has addictive fatty meaty savoury salty grainy sweet vegetal eggy flavours, a satisfying comfort dish. Good!

Update Jul-2024: Fong Sheng Hao has grown over the last 4 years, and they've more branches that also feature a larger menu now. The ambience, service, and food quality is as good as ever, though prices have risen slightly to keep pace with inflation.
Fong Sheng Hao Meal Flat Lay |
The Ham And Egg Omelette (SGD $6.20) is a little flat in looks, but decently tasty. The crisp wheat pancake wrap has a light grainy sweet savoury flavour, with the slice of tender pork ham and soft egg omelette within lending meaty savoury salty eggy sweet flavour. Decent but not outstanding.

The Taiwanese Pork Sausage (SGD $5.90) is more highly priced than elsewhere, but pretty good in value. The large Taiwanese pork sausage is well grilled, snappy crunchy outside and juicy tender inside, bursting with smoky meaty salty savoury flavour. Served over a bed of crisp shredded white cabbage with vegetal sweet flavour. The sausage is succulent and satisfying, great side to pair with a meal. Good!
