Introduction
Located about 50 minutes drive away from the Penang international airport in Penang, Malaysia, the Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is a cozy casual 4-star beach-front hotel, owned and operated under the Accor Group. A popular getaway location for locals due to its clean, semi-private beach, the Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is comfortable enough for leisurely short stays.
Ambience
Ambience at Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is vibrant and modern. Brightly coloured furnishings and pops of colour along the walls lend a youthful playful energy, while expansive views of the beach and open sea beckon. The Sun Deck and Terrace are perfect spots for photo opportunities during the day, and are also illuminated at night for different picture-worthy moments.
Room
Rooms at Hotel Mercure Penang Beach are spacious, modern, and clean. I stayed at the Superior King Room With Ocean View, offering a sight at sunrise and sunset. The living room was clean, with a sturdy working desk and comfortable sofa, although the glass cover for the coffee table required a wipe-down. The in-room television had an underwhelming selection of cable channels, though the wireless internet was fast and stable. The bed was large and comfortable. I like the inclusion of a bidet in the bathroom, and the rain shower was decent, although the shower area was a little cramped.
Food
Food at Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is provided at The Ombak in-house restaurant, but I did not have an opportunity to dine here. However, the in-room menu is rather limited in range. There's a lot of good street food nearby the Hotel Mercure Penang Beach, so we ate elsewhere most of the time.
Service
Service at Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is very good. Staff are efficient at fulfilling requests, and provide clear explanations during check-in and check-out. I had a clogged sink in my room, and when maintainence / housekeeping personnel came, they fixed it quickly and cleanly; I was grateful enough and decided to tip them. However, the limited on-site parking lots is a problem during peak periods.
Facilities & Activities
The facilities and activities at Hotel Mercure Penang Beach are decent. The best thing here is the semi-private beach area, as well as dining in The Ombak overlooking the beach. The swimming pool also sees good use for those who prefer to avoid the ocean. However, the gymnasium is in a state of partial disrepair, with the weights machine lacking the handlebars (which had broken off). Location wise, the Hotel Mercure Penang Beach is conveniently located near several areas of interest in Penang, Malaysia, most of which is a short drive away.
