Day 1 night, we headed to Chulia Street Night Market & Xi Nan Cafe. The area on a weekday night seemed quieter than I recall, with only a handful of stalls in the Chulia Street Night Market, perhaps a fallout of the pandemic. The remaining stall holders seem to have banded together; now, you grab a seat by the road, and an order-taker offers menus from all affliated stalls.
Loved the Lor Bak, or 5 Spice Roll (MYR RM18), a mixture of fried items and fritters. Among the medley of ingredients, those that stood out included the eponymous 5 Spice Roll with its crisp crunch to the tofu bean curd skin, and robust meaty earthy savoury sweet salty nutty spice flavour from the juicy filling (minced pork, water chestnut, deshelled shrimp, 5-spice powder). The bouncy tofu bean curd with grainy sweet flavour was comforting, while the chewy Taiwanese pork sausages had addictive meaty savoury sweet smoky flavour. Served with a spicy chili sauce and a thick sweet sauce, this was an overall tasty lor bak. Good!

The Chee Cheong Fun (MYR RM4.80) here is just average at best. While the rice noodle rolls were smooth and lightly chewy with mild grainy sweet flavour, the gravy wasn't particularly exciting. Could be improved.

Possibly the only salad dish here at the Chulia Street Night Market, the Cuttlefish Kang Kong (MYR RM18) is a good choice to pair with a meal. The fresh crunchy blanched water spinach / kang kong leaves have good vegetal bitter sweet flavour, while the slippery crunchy blanched cuttlefish lends good texture. The pickled mustard greens lends a soft crunch to texture, with decent vegetal salty sour sweet flavour. Topped with crushed peanuts and lime juice, the thick gravy on the cuttlefish kang kong has an enticing sweet savoury shrimpy sour spice flavour, yum. Worth ordering!

The Xi Nan Cafe at the street corner is open in the early evenings, but it was packed, with every table occupied. Here, we were drawn to the frying skills of the hawker at Granny's Fried Oyster Omelette Shop. The Fried Oyster Omelette (MYR RM16) has lots of egg without much potato starch, fluffy and soft and moist, with bold eggy sweet savoury salty flavour. The oysters were rather small and carried a small juicy bite with briny salty sweet flavour. The fried oyster omelette paired well with the spicy garlic chili. Good!

This noodle shop has been operating here since the 1940s at Xi Nan Cafe. Their signature Wanton Noodles (MYR RM6.50) is served Hong Kong style with a dark soy sauce gravy. They're well regarded for having bouncy thin egg noodles with grainy sweet salty flavour, and medium-sized minced pork dumplings infused with pork lard oil which carries robust meaty sweet savoury salty flavour, yum. The thinly sliced char siew / roast pork loin is forgettable, and the crunchy crunchy chye sim / choy sum / Chinese flowering cabbage is decent with vegetal sweet flavour, overall an alright rendition of wanton noodles. Worth ordering!

Chanced upon Burgersaurus as we were searching for a place to park, and owners Bruce and Frankie were kind enough to direct us, so we promised to return and dine here. Burgersaurus is a small casual eatery serving American style burgers just off the busy Lebuh Chulia / Chulia Street, and while not immediately visible from the main street, the minute you turn off to the side street it's located on, it's unmissable.

Loved the Porkysaurus (MYR RM17.90) burger. This features a thick juicy tender 140g hand-formed minced pork patty, crisp coral lettuce, juicy tomato, juicy pineapple ring, crisp white onions, crunchy dill pickles, soft American cheese, creamy mayonnaise, and thick yellow mustard, all sandwiched between fluffy soft brioche burger buns. Loved the messy burst of bready grainy vegetal fruity meaty sweet salty sour savoury earthy spice flavours here. An addictive pork burger, so delicious. Highly recommended!

Sister Yao's Char Koay Kak & Café Seow Fong Lye

Opening Hours: Thu - Sun 7am – 12pm, Closed Mon - Wed

Day 2 early morning, we began early at Sister Yao's Char Koay Kak & Café Seow Fong Lye, which is located next to each other along the road.
Sister Yao's Char Koay Kak Shop is run by the Yao (or Eoh) sisters, their pushcart a fixture over the last 50+ years, ever since their father Eoh Joo Seng started it in 1963. Madam Yao Guat Lan and Madam Yao Guat Hoon uses a combination of rice and corn flour to make their koay kak, moulding, steaming, then breaking it into pieces by hand. The rice cakes are first fried with dark soy sauce, pork lard oil, vegetable oil, fish sauce, and minced garlic. Upon order, it's tossed with salted daikon radish, duck egg, bean sprouts, and chili paste, then served over a banana leaf. The aroma of the Char Koay Kak (MYR RM6) hits you first, an enticing fragrance that excites the palate. Each greasy mouthful is soft and crisp and moist, with bold eggy sweet savoury salty spice smoky flavours. We'd ordered a version with extra duck eggs, which cost MYR RM2 more than the regular version (which is actually MYR RM4). This is among the best versions of char koay kak I've ever eaten. Highly recommended!

At the Café Seow Fong Lye, I find their Coffee (MYR RM1.60) to be a good perk-me-up in the mornings, fragrant and toasty sweet with a good strength.

The lady boss owner of Café Seow Fong Lye, Madam Lee Lai Foong runs a pushcart selling Chee Cheong Fun (MYR RM2.80) just outside the shop, where she still personally cooks and serves to this day. Her rendition looks messy and unassuming, but has bouncy silky smooth rice noodle rolls with faint grainy sweet flavour. What makes it fantastic is the generous lashings of thick fermented shrimp paste, sweet hoisin sauce, chili paste, and sesame oil, giving this a robust and punchy savoury shrimpy sweet spicy nutty flavour. Completely yummy, I agree with those who claim it's among the best versions of chee cheong fun on Penang island. Highly recommended!

Day 2 late morning, we dropped by Pitt Street Koay Teow Th'ng & Kafe Ping Hooi, which are located a few shops apart along the same street.
At Pitt Street Koay Teow Th'ng Shop, the slow-stewing pot of pork and duck parts hint to their popularity, as does the long and constant queue. They're renowned for hand made fish balls (made from eel paste) and pork meat balls, as well as the comfortingly light pork and duck broth with springy silky koay teow noodles.

The signature Koay Teow Th'ng (MYR RM5.50) is a delight, springy silky smooth koay teow rice noodles with mild grainy sweet flavour, in a soulful pork and duck soup / broth infused with pork lard, giving it a lovely comforting sweet savoury flavour. The eel paste fish balls are bouncy with sweet salty flavour, while the tender sliced pork is meaty sweet savoury and incredibly succulent. Some crisp lettuce lends a vegetal sweet note, while chewy shredded duck lends meaty savoury salty flavour. The koay teow th'ng is finished with fried garlic and pork lard, which lends a oily spice salty savoury flavour. So delicious. Highly recommended!

The Koay Teow Gan (MYR RM5.50) features similar ingredients, but in place of soup / broth, is instead served in a thin gravy of light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, fish sauce, and pork lard. This carries a deep meaty savoury salty sweet flavour, nice. This koay teow gan will appeal to those who like variety, I personally still prefer the soup / broth version. Worth ordering!

Rounded off Day 2 morning over at Kafe Ping Hooi. The famed Tiger Char Koay Teow (MYR RM9) here has silky smooth koay teow rice noodles stir-fried with wispy duck eggs, crisp bean sprouts, bouncy blood cockles, crispy pork lard, chewy lup cheong / dried cured Chinese pork sausage, crisp spring onions, and fresh deshelled large prawns. Day 2 afternoon, we visited one of the most popular and well regarded nasi kandar shops around, Deens Maju Nasi Kandar. Holding strong with a Google rating of 4.4 out of 5 points from over 8,777 reviews, a sure sign they're doing something right. Our GPS confusingly directed us down a narrow alley to the back door of the shop; it was only after spotting the long queue curving around the side of the building that we realised we'd arrived.
Much has been said about the long, constant queue at Deens Maju Nasi Kandar, though it moves fairly quickly. We waited just 20 minutes, and as most folks ordered takeaway, there was ample seats for dine-in.

Their Nasi Kandar (MYR RM75.25) is hearty and delicious, with fast serving speed and wallet-friendly prices, a satisfying meal overall. There's a good range of dishes to choose from, I counted about 25 options.

The base of any nasi kandar meal is a plate of steaming White Rice, fluffy moist with grainy sweet flavour. Paired with a side of Gravy, a mix of spices, soy sauce, and curry, which lends that signature addictive savoury sweet salty spice flavour. Ah, white rice with gravy, so shiok. Good!

The Ayam Goreng / Fried Chicken is the star here, coated in a marinade of spices (including turmeric) that gives it an addictive savoury spice salty flavour. The fried chicken is perfectly done, crispy skin with tender juicy chicken meat. Little surprise that nearly everyone orders this. Highly recommended!
Ayam Goreng / Fried Chicken |
The Rendang Beef was tender with a light chew, tearing apart easily. Each bite of the meaty beef rendang carries bold savoury salty spice earthy flavour, rather satisfying. Good!
Rendang Beef |
Devoid of most of its gamey taste, the Rendang Mutton was pretty good, with bone-in chunks of lamb infused with curry and spices. The meat of the mutton rendang is tender with meaty savoury spice sweet flavour, I liked this better than the beef version. Good!
Rendang Mutton |
The ubiquitous Cabbage Thoran is a classic South Indian side dish, made with rough chopped cabbage cooked in coconut oil and tempered with spices (mustard seeds, cumin seeds, salt, shallots / red onions, green chili, powdered turmeric, curry leaves). Sometimes, a little grated coconut is added for an earthy floral sweet note. Mildly spiced and brightly colored, you get the light crunch of the cabbage thoran in each bite, and its delicate vegetal sweet spice flavour. Great when paired with white rice. Good!
Cabbage Thoran |
For a more refreshing contrast, folks opt for the Cucumbers & Pineapples. Exactly as its name suggests, juicy chunks of cucumbers and pineapples, with bright fruity vegetal sweet flavour, help to relieve and refresh the palate. Good!
Cucumbers & Pineapples |
Interestingly, the Telur Ikan / Capelin Fish Eggs is among the more exotic dishes available here. The capelin fish eggs are tightly packed into cake-like chunks, and have a soft spongy chew. Flavour is sweet savoury spicy, picking up primarily from the curry. Worth ordering!
Telur Ikan / Capelin Fish Eggs |
Completed our nasi kandar meal with an order of Sotong Goreng / Fried Squid and Salted Egg. The salted egg is straightforward, soft with salty eggy sweet flavour. The fried squid was delicious, crunchy and bouncy, with the spice batter shattering gently, releasing an enticing savoury sweet spice salty flavour. Good!

Day 2 afternoon was really warm, so to cool off, we headed to the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul, whereupon we found an hour-long takeaway queue snaking around the block, in the exposed sun. Not wishing to wait-and-bake, we joined the much shorter dine-in queue instead.
The classic Chendol (MYR RM4.40) here features a mix of coconut milk, pandan / screwpine leaf jelly noodles, shaved ice, palm sugar / gula melaka, and red beans, served chilled. Refreshing with its floral earthy sweet flavour, this chendol really helps you cool off from the hot weather. Highly recommended!

Stopped by Ban Heang for traditional pastries. The Tau Sar Pneah / Tambun Biscuit (MYR RM10.50 per box of 13 pieces) is a pastry filled with mashed green beans and mung beans, wheat flour, sugar, salt, fried red onions, and glazed with vegetable oil then baked. These tau sar pneah / tambun biscuit have a crumbly firm texture, with buttery earthy sweet savoury flavour, easy to eat in just 1 or 2 mouthfuls. Good!

Day 2 night, I had been craving for a good ramly burger, and Minsi'z Burger does one of the best versions on the island. A popular street side kiosk in the Tanjung Tokong suburb near Straits Quay, Minsi'z Burger is unmissable at the corner of a busy intersection, opposite the Masjid Karwa / Karwa Mosque.
The family-run Minsi'z Burger serves quickly, and you'll often see motorists stop by to grab a quick bite, especially in the evenings till late night. Reasonably priced, delicious, and with large portions that are freshly made to order, it's little wonder that Minsi'z Burger is the burger joint of choice in this area.

Day 3 morning, we set off bright and early for the Fettes Park Coffee Shop. A familiar locale at which I'd eaten growing up, the variety of hawker stalls at Fettes Park Coffee Shop has remained more or less the same throughout the years, though some stalls now have the 2nd generation running it. Prices have also remained slightly more affordable as compared to markets within the city.

Freshly made-to-order, the Apong Kosong / Pancake Plain (MYR RM3.50 for 5 pieces) has batter quickly splashed and swirled around hot pans, and left to set for a few seconds, creating this fluffy fragile thin pancake. Shatteringly crisp at the edges, slightly fluffy chewy towards the middle, each bite has a grainy bready sweet flavour that is so fragrant. Highly recommended!

The master-hawker behind the Char Koay Teow (MYR RM6) here has been serving for well over 20 years, and their rendition is tastier than most. The silky smooth koay teow rice noodles is stir-fried with wispy duck eggs, crisp bean sprouts, bouncy blood cockles, crispy pork lard, chewy lup cheong / dried cured Chinese pork sausage, crisp spring onions, and fresh deshelled large prawns. Less oily but still as tasty as elsewhere, each mouthful carries bold smoky aroma of wok hei / breath of the wok, then you get the delicious savoury eggy sweet salty spice flavours, with a more pronounced sweet spicy kick. Another favourite of the locals here, the Hock Kian Prawn Mee (MYR RM6) sees brisk business. And no wonder, the hearty bowl of warm prawn soup / broth, filled with silky rice vermicelli noodles and chewy yellow wheat noodles is pure comfort food, with its enticing meaty shrimpy savoury salty sweet spicy flavours. Also known as Hokkien prawn noodles, the hock kian prawn mee is garnished with crisp bean sprouts, crunchy kang kong / water spinach, tender sliced pork, chewy dried shrimp, bouncy hard boiled egg, and crisp fried shallots, all of which pick up the lovely flavours of the prawn soup / broth. You can decide how much chili paste you wish to add, stirring it in for a bright sour spicy kick. Highly recommended!

Pretty decent Curry Mee (MYR RM5) here, I like how you can adjust the level of spiciness with the chili paste served on the side. Also never realised that the curry (which is usually red or orange when served elsewhere) is actually white or beige in its base form. The curry mee features silky thick rice vermicelli noodles, crisp bean sprouts, crunchy string beans, bouncy blood cockles, chewy cuttlefish, and spongy dried tofu bean curd puffs, combining for vegetal grainy sweet savoury spice flavour. Pretty decent. Worth ordering!

Continued Day 3 morning by searching for Loh Kei Duck Meat Koay Teow Th'ng, and we got lost, going around several times, until we realised the shop was hidden within the compound of the State Chinese Penang Association Building, in a large tentage next to the building itself.
Only operating in the morning and usually selling out before lunch, Loh Kei Duck Meat Koay Teow Th'ng serves a twist on the classic koay teow th'ng dish, by using duck meat instead of pork. The place seems to be an open secret amongst locals, frequented by members of the association and marketed through word-of-mouth.
