We thought we lost our way when searching for Jeju Dot (제주돗돼지 고기구이), as the GPS brought us to a quiet, secluded neighbourhood... until we spotted the rows of cars parked in front of an unassuming house. Even then, we did a double-take and checked that we indeed arrived at Jeju Dot, one of the most highly rated restaurants on the island for Korean barbecue.

Ambience at Jeju Dot is family-friendly, casual, and unassuming. I can see why the place is packed with families, with their expansive yard with playground, great for running around (and setting off fireworks). Within the unassuming house, the spacious place is brightly lit and neatly lined with rows of barbecue tables and cushioned stools. At the side is a separate cooking area so diners don't get food odours clinging to their clothes (and also ensures child safety).

Service at Jeju Dot is friendly, efficient, and accommodating. Staff were able to converse in halting English and gestures, yet were able to offer recommendations. They communicated that the majority of cooking is done by their own staff in the side cooking area, with the built-in table grill meant just for quickly finishing the barbecued meats. Staff proactively offered to top up drinks, and also cleaned up quickly when diners leave. Advance reservations are recommended, we'd arrived without booking but fortunately had a short 20 minutes wait.

Food at Jeju Dot is Korean cuisine, focused on Korean barbecue. They only offer 3 cuts of meat, black pork belly, black pork neck, and boneless pork ribs, served in a set with several banchan / side dishes. Ingredients are fresh and premium, lightly seasoned to highlight the natural taste. Portions are sized for individuals, with serving sizes of 200g of meat per order. Prices are wallet-friendly and reasonable, budget about KRW ₩34,000 / SGD $34 per person.

We decided to try mixing the Beer Cass (KRW ₩5,000 / SGD $5) and Hallasan Jeju Soju (KRW ₩5,000 / SGD $5), as the locals do. The blend turned out surprisingly refreshing, and the alcohol sneaks up on you, given its pleasant easy-drinking profile. Good!

A complimentary range of Banchan / Side Dishes to accompany the barbecued meats. The crisp wispy Pa Muchim / Green Onion Salad with its vegetal sweet spicy flavour, and crisp juicy Yangpa Jangajji / Pickled Onions with its vegetal salty sweet flavour, pairs well with the barbecued pork meats. The crunchy juicy Kkakdugi / Pickled Daikon Radish with its vegetal sour sweet flavour helps refresh the palate, while the fresh crisp Sangchu / Lettuce lends vegetal sweet flavour when wrapped with the meat. Good!

The Myeolchi-Jeot / Salted Anchovy Sauce was unique, thin but with deep briny salty savoury fishy flavour, not overly pungent. When paired with the barbecued pork meats, it lends a lovely layer of taste that doesn't distract. Good!

We enjoyed the Samgyeopsal Gui / Grilled Pork Belly (KRW ₩22,000 / SGD $22 per 200g serving), with its ratio of fatty to lean pork meat. The black pork is good quality, carrying a robust natural meaty savoury flavour, and takes on a lovely smoky note when grilled. It's succulent with a crunchy juicy chew to texture, yum. Highly recommended!

The Hangjeong Sal Gui / Grilled Pork Neck (KRW ₩22,000 / SGD $22 per 200g serving) has a lean chewy bite, with smoky meaty savoury flavour. Pretty decent, this cut serves as the best foil for pairing with the accompaniments. Good!
