I got to know the proprietors of this quaint, family-owned Indonesian restaurant a few years back when I was in sales, and they became my customers. Thus, the first time I dined at Resto Surabaya was mainly out of goodwill. Since then however, I've returned several times, as I find the food and service to be pretty good.

Resto Surabaya specialized in traditional, home-cooked style Indonesian food from the Surabaya region. The menu here used to be more extensive, but in recent years, has been reduced which gives it more focus in each dish. The most popular dishes at Resto Surabaya are the Ayam Penyet Surabaya, Ayam Bakar, Ikan Bakar, Tahu Telur and Sup Buntut.

Staff at Resto Surabaya are friendly, and ordering is made simple through filling out an order sheet. Food is served pretty quickly. However, the wait staff may get overwhelmed during peak periods.

The biggest let-down about Resto Surabaya is the ambience. Tables are quite closely packed, and the overall restaurant is dimly lit. Resto Surabaya can also get especially crowded during lunch / dinner hours, as it's popular with Indonesians and Filipinos.

The Ikan Bandeng Tanpa Tulang Bakar / Grilled Milk Fish is the most popular Ikan Bakar dish. The fish is well filleted and de-boned, and grilled in a savoury sweet sauce. The most interesting part of this dish is the gelatinous texture in the middle of the milk fish.

The Sayur Labusiam Siamese Pumpkin Soup is a somewhat spicy broth, with a texture similar to stew.
