As the state of Penang in Malaysia becomes more affluent, there has been an increase in lifestyle shops opening for business. The latest trend is gourmet chocolate shops, and leading the charge is Chocolate Passion Cafe. The pioneer and the 1st of these gourmet chocolate shops, Chocolate Passion Cafe opened in June 2012, and to date has 3 outlets across the state. Offering freshly made, quality gourmet chocolates, coffee, and desserts, Chocolate Passion Cafe is popular amongst the young and trendy.

Ambience at Chocolate Passion Cafe is cozy and welcoming, suitable for relaxing / chilling session. The warmly lit interior is fronted by an attractive, colourful display of gourmet chocolates, and layout is simple but clean. Modern, comfortable furniture lines the interior, and private spaces have been carved out for intimate gatherings. The lights are rather dim at night though, but the natural lighting during the day is pretty good.

Service at Chocolate Passion Cafe is partial self-service. Ordering and payment is done over the counter, but staff will serve orders to your table. Staff here are relatively young, but friendly, and able to converse in English. They're able to make simple recommendations, as well as describe in general the various desserts and gourmet chocolates. Unless you ask however, there is very little interaction with staff.

Food at Chocolate Passion Cafe is focused on chocolate; be it desserts, cakes, pastries, or drinks. Don't expect any main course / appetizers here, Chocolate Passion Cafe is a place to visit only after a meal. I like that the majority of items here are hand made, and the range of items on the menu is extensive. Portions are nicely sized, and most desserts are suitable for sharing between 2 people. Prices are comparable to other cafes, and is considered up-market for Malaysia.

The spacious interior has been carved out to still feel intimate and cozy. With easy, comfortable furniture, this makes for a great chilling spot, and it's easy to have time pass by quickly here.

The extensive menu is clearly labelled in English, and I appreciate the many pictures within, featuring each dish or item. Special off-menu items are displayed on menus around the shop however, and is worth a look before you order.

The Cafe Latte (MYR $9.90) has a smooth body with medium robust flavour, decent enough for a coffee.

The Passion Chocolate Ice Blended (MYR $12) arrives in a tall glass, and I love the not-too-sweet taste of the passion fruit and chocolate combination. The texture is thick, as befits an ice blended beverage, and the drink is overall rather refreshing with its fruity notes.

The selection of gourmet chocolates are attractively displayed in a clean, glass counter, and is incredibly eye catching with its vivid colours. Each piece is hand made, though I note a lack of precision decorating with their technique. Taste however, is very good, comparable to most gourmet chocolates elsewhere, the stated flavours are present in each bite.
